TOLN Announces Season Finales of AMC/OLTL

Here's the quote from Jen a few weeks ago about a fan favorite return. But they weren't filming during this time so are these returns separate? Or was she being coy?

"Soaps.com: Any classic characters coming back who we can look out for?

Pepperman: We are in talks to bring back a very popular classic character and I’m not at liberty to say yet who it is. But the fans will be very excited by it. Because we are a half-hour show I want to make sure all of the characters on the canvas have story. "

I don't think this means she was talking about for sure whoever appears on August 19th.

She was either being coy or it's someone else. (Like Victor and Todd)

But it depends, also, on when that interview was done, as opposed to when it went to press. It could well have been done during block 2 taping.

I'm fine with seasons in principle - the shows have been talking about breaking the shows into seasons from the start. I don't mind a telenovela-style format, because those shows are extremely successful and as much as I love 5 days a week year round, I will take 3-5 days a week for 20 to 40 shows to streamline the form and the medium for a digital age and a digital budget. I just want to know that they're going back into production as planned.

There's also the latest rumor about their supposedly talking to ABC, which is just wacky.

They mention the 45th anniversary so I assume it's somewhat recent

The answers are simple (if aggravating) - they have been prepping a new release schedule and reconsidering a new production/release model for some time. There's also a lot of murmurings around about who might pick them up in future. I knew it was coming very soon, but I'm mildly surprised it's coming this fast.

This break gives them room to breathe in terms of production, for both shows. AMC is taping this month, OLTL early next. If they'd continued non-stop they would've been cutting it very close to the point of exhaustion.

I know that some online love to mock every break from the same old daytime norm that these shows take, but I'd rather they keep experimenting with their new forms to get it right and keep these shows financially viable for them than try to emulate the network scheduling and die.

My bet is late September/early October for a return. And likely release in 20-40 episodes blocks after that. Hopefully 40. I don't think 20 is enough.

Competition is fierce out there in Soap Land. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences probably has rules in place for Daytime Soaps. AMC and OLTL might not be eligible in the future because they might not qualify based on lack of a minimum of episodes done in a judging period like all the rest of the network soaps who provide shows year around. The type of business model just might take AMC and OLTL out of it competition wise.

Keep experimenting and that shows instability and indecisiveness. Can't make a decision. Can't stick to the plan. Go back on their word and all the promotional objectives once held are gone.

Fans still want year around soaps.

Linda, you don't speak for anyone so I wish you'd stop trying.

I speak for myself. Just giving my own viewpoints and call it as I see it.

Linda, it's a digital product in a new medium that does not have the massive budget of a network soap. These shows also had a very swift timetable to get up and back on the air before losing their option. What exactly is your alternative strategy to their continuing to refine their schedule and product?

I hope they don't cut back on the 40 episodes block. If they do then they'll have to make some cast cuts. Simply not enough airtime to go around

Things I want to know.

1. Will there still be 110 episodes? (They just said there will be a second season...but nothing more...)

2. If they knew weeks ago that there were only 40 episodes in the can, and knew they were only going to start filming OLTL again in September, why wasn't the season finale date announced then? Did no one do the math? (We never were given specific numbers of episodes completed on the record except they said there were enough banked before they resume production again, which obviously not true.)

I could live with 40 episode seasons. That's not too different from a prime time show (20 hour episodes.). 20 30 min episodes would be really disappointing to me.

20 episodes would piss me off. Unless they came back every other month.

30 or 40 I could handle.

If they dropped them all at the same time, it would kill discussion and buzz. 40 episode seasons being like prime time well let's hope the people writing these new episodes were told this and they didn't except to write them as daytime shows.

This does make sense as to why the Celia guardian story has been tweaked so much, I bet that's one of the big season finale cliffhangers. I'm curious if they're going to do anything with Jane's identity before the season finale or if they're going to hold off on that until season two.

They should end the season with Jane shooting someone at a party--but we don't find out who till the next season ;)

OMG. I like the way you think! Honestly, with all the flirting she's been doing with David, it wouldn't surprise me if she really is the Jane doppelganger from the end of the ABC run. laugh.png
