Christian Entertainment

The concerns of the pious, Christian community have long been marginalized in Hollywood. We have been yearning for entertainment that reflects our values, and thankfully the legendary Rick Santorum has decided to step up to the plate by becoming CEO of Dallas-based EchoLight Studios.

Senator Santorum has the lofty goal of transforming Dallas into the quality Christian entertainment capital of the world. If you click on this link, you can view the trailers of several EchoLight productions. A few of them are written by, directed by, and star the great Corbin Bernsen.

Believing that marriage is between one man and one woman--which has been part of Judeo/Christian theology for thousands of years (and which gay "hero" Obama still believed some 18 months ago)--doesn't make one a hate monger. I respect how other people feel about the issue (and I once felt differently myself, before I became more religious), and so does Senator Santorum. Unfortunately, some of the left have become intolerant and are unwilling to listen to any dissent on this issue.

Senator Santorum has also leads a life of piety that none of his detractors seem to give him credit for. On the issue of abortion, he has walked the walk. He and his wife, Karen, never once considered aborting their youngest child, Isabella. Sweet Isabella is diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disorder which kills 90% of its victims before the age of one. By the grace of Jesus, Isabella is still alive, and Rick and Karen always put her first. There can be no doubt of his stellar character.

Also, disparaging remarks concerning homosexuality are not found in EchoLight films. Hate of any kind is not tolerated by pious Christians, and Christian entertainment is among the most uplifting forms of entertainment anywhere.

Max, I admit I have an unfair bias against anything labeled Christian entertainment. If I don't find it insulting (and it doesn't sound like the stuff you're talking about here is) I tend to think it's not of high quality. Interesting that Corbin is involved.

(To be fair--a huge amount of stuff specifically made with a gay market in mind--like 3/4 of the rom coms and dramas released by TLA Releasing are of decidedly subpar quality too and seem to only be successes because they have naked or near naked fit guys and tap into obvious gay tropes like dealing with coming out, but with little imagination or artistry.)

The problem is not believing that marriage is between one man and one woman, the problem is the concept of LEGISLATING that specific religious belief, and foisting it upon others of different religions (Or people of no religion). No church should be forced to perform a gay wedding ceremony, while also, no church should be able to legally deny a gay couple a marriage in the eyes of the STATE. Jews should not be able to legislate pork products off the market, and Jehova's witnesses should not be able to legislate away blood transfusions...... the question has to arise, when discussing prohibiting something through legislation, does that action (In this case, gay marriage) cause financial or physical harm to another person? The answer of course, is no. So there is no reason for it not to be legal. So either make it legal, or remove ALL marriage benefits from the tax code and legal code, and let it be simply a religious ceremony ONLY with no legal rights attached.

Eric, thanks so much for your thoughtful response. I think that because Christian entertainment companies have had trouble raising money, some Christian films look relatively cheap. (Although after watching trailers for those EchoLight films, I would say that those movies don't have a cheap look to them.) I am hoping that somebody as high profile as Santorum will be able to raise a lot of money for his company, so Christian films will look much more professionally produced.

Getting big names involved in Christian entertainment is definitely a problem. I'd say that Corbin Bernsen and Kirk Cameron are by far the biggest name actors involved in Christian film industry. I am guessing that a lot of big name stars don't want to get involved either because (1) they don't agree with the conservative Christian movement or (2) aren't willing to work for such (relatively) little money.

Interestingly, I think the monetary issues/concerns also apply to the LGBT entertainment industry as well. While the number of major Hollywood productions that deal with gays or homosexuality has gone up, all such movies are specifically intended for a broad audience. Companines formed with the intent to produce quality content specifically for an LGBT audience seem to still struggle for funding, which affects their ability to hire the biggest name actors.

Alphanguy, you have every right to feel the way you do. The thing is that it would be impossible to prevent making laws and legislation based upon one particular belief. Religious theology is how many people know that it is wrong to steal; thus, all our laws against stealing can be traced back to the Ten Commandments. This is just one example, but we are legislating a specific belief when we ban stealing.

You hold a commonly held view that no harm is being done as a result of a gay marriage. Some pious Christians respectfully disagree, because they feel that the ideal child-raising environment is one with both a mother and a father. We feel the same danger exists if three people were to get married. Now, many become infuriated whenever homosexuality is compared to polygamy, but I honestly cannot understand how one can be supportive of gay marriage but opposed to the marriage of three or more people. If one believes that people should be free to marry whomever they want, then it logically follows that polygamists have the right to marry. I have personally struggled with the issue of gay marriage for a long time (and like I mentioned, once felt differently about the issue), but I have found guidance in spiritual theology in believing that it is best to limit the institution to just one man and one woman. Because, if we are to say that we can't use religion when deciding who should and shouldn't get married (as Alphanguy pointed out), then there's no reason to not legalize marriage between three or more people.

Also, whenever the topic of conservative Christianity comes up, there seems to be a great misconception that we're all singularly obsessed with gay marriage. The media plays into this false belief, so much so that I also believed this misconception back when I was a moderate Republican. The fact of the matter is that gay marriage is just one issue that we feel threatens the ideal family situation (in which to raise a child). We also believe that adultery and divorce are major threats to marriage, but that doesn't mean that we hate people who cheat or get divorces. Likewise, opposition to gay marriage doesn't mean we hate gay people.

AMS, it is sad that such shows are hard to come by today. While they may have not been as spiritual as many in the Christian world would have liked, they made up for it with their great production values and acting.

From a business point of view, I'm sure those shows had horrendous deomgraphics, which is why we don't see them around anymore.

I'll gladly discuss Christian entertainment (scripted programming), but I don't want to get into a war about any other issues. I like much of what they show in reruns on UP along with some of their original movies (used to be GMC) and recently got INSP which has Matlock reruns among other things.

I'm actually of the belief that the word of God reaches far more people if it is intertwined in music and television and movies, as opposed to being some separate genre. Movies such as thos produced by Echolight are basically preaching to the choir, and don't succeed in bringing anyone to faith. I feel they are basically an exercise in self-affirmation, so some people can watch, and bask in how good they are, essentially, a glorification of their own goodness. When God is put in as part of the whole picture, then it reaches more people, and is a better representation of how God and Religion fits into everday life. Such as the Storyline with Brock and Katherine on Y&R in 1974. And even popping up in unexpected places like This episode of Playboy After Dark in 1968:

Santorum thinks that same-sex couples should not even be allowed the right to be in a relationship.

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2011/10/rick-santorum-still-believes-gay-sex-should-be-crime

It's not about gay marriage, really. Santorum opposes everything - gays in the military, job discrimination laws, and more.

Not even getting into his other views, which are as bad, or worse.

If this is what his studio stands for, then I won't be watching it.
