DAYS: NABET crew members (audio/lighting/video depts.) have been laid off

"DAYS" NABET-CWA CREW MEMBERS SET TO BE LAID OFF:

News is coming out that the "Days" NABET-CWA Local 53 crew members have been laid off, effective December 31. NABET comprises most of the positions in the audio, lighting and video departments. Many are long-time veterans of the show. Of the group, technical directors Mike Caruso & J.C. O'Neill have been with the show the longest, since the early 1980's. Lighting director Ted Polmanski and cameramen John Sizemore and Mike Mecartea joined the show full-time after "Santa Barbara" was cancelled in 1992. Jackie Frazier, who "Days" had write a few episodes from 2001-2003, has been a boom operator with the show since the mid-1990's. Overall, the NABET crew members were responsible for 35 of 212 Daytime Emmy nominations that the show has received through the years.

In happier times, here was NABET's advertisement, congratulating "Days" on its 30th anniversary in 1995: http://www.jason47.c...images/hr19.JPG

Here are some quotes regarding the planned layoffs, from the October 29, 2012 edition of The Burbank Leader:

More than 175 employees at entertainment-related companies in Burbank likely will be laid off starting in December...studio representatives said.

NBCUniversal issued 50 layoff notices effective Dec. 31, according to the state. The employees — who primarily fill technical and operations positions — are represented by the National Assn. of Broadcast Employees and Technicians - Communications Workers of America, Local 53.

Union president Steve Ross said NBCUniversal officials are saying the workers aren’t needed because the company no longer owns the studio lot in Burbank, which it sold in 2007. Some of the air-conditioning and building-services workers have been hired by the lot’s new owner, Ross said. However, production staffers who work on “Days of Our Lives” are still in limbo, he added.

Ross said he has filed grievances against NBCUniversal over the layoffs. “I don’t agree with what they’re doing,” he said.

Only DAYS consistently looks and plays that bad for years on end. Only DAYS consistently seems to revel in destroying itself, first through the writing and showcased performers then from the inside out. Eileen Davidson is back and getting wasted like everyone else.

Please say it was on a dare.

More like an endurance test. Or maybe I'm more of a masochist than I know.

Well, that explains the glazed-over expression in her (and everyone else's) eyes.

Can't say I blame her, though. If you have to toke up to watch DAYS these days, I could only imagine what you'd need to work on it.

Either way, Vee, you are the [!@#$%^&*] for surviving. "Everybody gets high, everybody gets low," but this body got gone.

To actors like Molly, Peter and Renee who left of your own accord.... sad to say this but you may have gotten out just in time. Wow. It's hard to be enthusiastic about Days when stuff like this happens. The same goes for other shows affected.

Perhaps, but DAYS does not have the budget to hire new crew members on their own dime.

Depends on if they went union, as they should, or went nonunion, as i predict they will.

Dont get me wrong, days' days are limited absolutely. but this is also a show thats been as close to cancelled without being axed as possible on more than one occasion on a network thats in no place to try something new given how little they actually pay to broadcast the show (with penalties, for ratings below a specific number). When days is counted out, its always come back. Id say its still 50/50, just like before.

Itll be interesting to see how Days, The Tonight Show, access hollywood, and the other shows taping at burbank will handle this. they all have to do something.

Only days? While i agree with you on it being bad for years and ruining itself, i surely would not limit this to only days. It is sadly the norm. Id give you GL, ATWT, OLTL, AMC, GH as examples and that is just in the daytime.

Esp ones like Molly who are booking gig after gig after gig.

Funny, they used to say the same about GUIDING LIGHT.

The question is 'with what?'

Nine times out of ten the answer is Gary Tomlin, some shitty writer, Sami, Rafe, Shawn Christian, Ice Cold Jennifer, the same old stories with EJ and Nicole and a slew of interchangeable teens or ruined characters who have just been brought back with great fanfare only to do virtually nothing. That's why they're here. They keep getting big chances and keep wasting them.

They're not forcing the actors to change clothes in the back of a car on the side of the road at gunpoint yet, I guess there's that.

The Wanchai Ferry bit is especially stupid since Caroline's carrying it around in her pub.

The Cheerios ad sucks because the she keeps showing the back of the box to the camera. Isn't the point of product placement to actually show the product? LOL!

That Wanchai Ferry bit still cracks my [!@#$%^&*] up.

Molly Burnett: "Oh, so THAT's why I didn't land that Proactiv commercial!"

I love that it happens during a tense moment in Sami's life. It's as if DAYS, or whoever wrote that script, was like, "Oh, whatevs, Sami's ALWAYS in crisis, let's just plug the product placement here, no one'll care!"
