The soaps lost their heart when the men stopped having big bulges!

If we're talking about actors that shows would fall apart without, I would say Eric Braeden and Katherine Kelly Lang.

They'd fall apart, but only because the respective P'sTB have done nothing to strengthen the rest of their canvasses.

Whatever failings the show had, I think that AMC managed to hang on to its heart and soul better than its contemporaries. I also think that they had characters who epitomized heart and soul right up until the end: Ruth, Opal and especially Angie.

Gosh, I was just thinking about this in relpy to cct's post in another thread. At its finest, I think that's what AMC had going for it most. As a loyal fan for many years, I grew disenchanted with AMC when it began to lose this in favor of a revolving door of vapid MWM (Models Who Memorize). AMC had tons of heart and soul back in the day thanks to Agnes Nixon and her well hewn, excellently cast characters. The fact of the matter is, the magic of these characters put money in the bank during the show's golden age, which is why (imho) folks like Jesse and Angie just had to SHOW UP and I was in the palms of their hands. AMC did "the work" back when it counted, and it won fans for life because of that. Plus, I have a thing for old people and AMC had plenty of super sweet, quirky, ornery, old folks to love.

MWM? I love that so much better than "hair models." Perfect, SFK!

Amen. IMO, Agnes Nixon's whole "brotherhood of man" philosophy wasn't jive. She truly believes it, and her stories are/were all the better for it.

You guys mean Kelly Sullivan isn't the heart and soul of the entire industry right now?

I hate that gif. I don't know anything about this actress or character and I hate it. It just screams bad acting.

So is Brooke Shields. wink.png

Such is the price we pay for a theatre industry that has come to value name recognition over actual talent.

But.....but....Kelly Sullivan is a seasoned and experienced Broadway actress! laugh.png

I'm so tired of reading that excuse. She is the worst actress on GH at the moment yet I keep hearing everyone else is bad.

The girl playing Kristina is probably worse, only she's boring as f.uck to look at, whereas Sullivan is just a trainwreck of epic proportions.

I know Sullivan was cast by JFP/Teschner, but I think Valentini has the absolute WORST taste when it comes to casting. Look no further than his preference of Mikey Jerome during the OLTL season of I Wanna Be A Soap Star, or much of the casting on OLTL during his tenure.

I don't think Teschner is as great a casting director as people hype him to be. There's a few good ones here and there who usually don't get much story or airtime but he tends to find some screechy ass women and the dullest men.

I may not care for NB (to put it mildly), but he's not lying - especially when it comes to KKL, FH, and KMc. It's just a shame that what's left of the soap industry is still dead set on maintaining the patriarchal status quo - especially to the benefit of the male actors who don't deserve it.

I love and adore Fin, but I don't think Anna could be considered a heart and soul character for the most part. NOW, given the time that has passed and Anna's status as a veteran character on GH, I can see where she COULD be one, but not overall.

I consider FH to be one because she portrayed an epitome of a strong, beautiful, intelligent, yet fallible character that defined GH at its very best. Barring that atrocious Guzafied stint, she (along with her soap daughter) is one of the reasons why her home soap (along with her adopted one) was so fondly regarded at a certain point in time.

Sharon Case is the heart of Y&R.

She is the only viable heroine Y&R has had in YEARS.
