By the way, here’s the trailer for RTD’s new limited series It’s a Sin, set during the AIDS epidemic. It looks amazing in the tradition of his previous gay series. It will stream on HBO Max starting February 18.

Just stumbled on Freema on New Amsterdam, the NBC medical drama (where she has the most gorgeous braids and is paired with Daniel Dae Kim). It’s just so gratifying to see what an actress she’s become. She, Karen, and Billie were all great on DW, if a bit green to start, but they’ve become such seasoned and rich performers. Billie, of course, is so respected as a stage actress now.

I'm thrilled for all of them. And while Freema has worked very steadily in major projects since DW, I do admittedly want to have the kind of smash breakthrough Karen and Billie have had in their respective careers. I'll never quite get over how RTD did her dirty in Series 3 - I knew from the moment I saw her onscreen that she could've run on the show for years and years like Lis Sladen did as Sarah Jane in the 70s. She had that kick and she was committed. Russell tried to clean it up later, but still.

RTD did her SO dirty. I find it a huge blemish on his career, and I respect him a lot. While Martha got many opportunities to be a bad-ass, she essentially got sidelined in that season’s best episodes by two white chicks (Carey Mulligan and Jessica Hynes). Plus the Jones family were never developed in the same way Rose’s mother Jackie or Wilfred were. I was glad to see Adjoa Anjoh get *something* to work with on Bridgerton because RTD made Francine look like an idiot.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s career has been going gangbusters. I’d love to see her and Freema work together again.

I think RTD and co. were so hung up on the Rose hangover (and then enamored of getting Catherine Tate) that they couldn't see the long-term forest for the trees with Martha. They tried to fix it by offering her Torchwood regular status and setting it up at the end of S4, but by then Freema had L&O UK and was moving on.

I always loved the Jones family, especially Adjoa Anjoh who's finally getting a bigger profile now along with Gugu.

The treatment of Martha (going all the way up to her ending with Mickey, and that scene in season 4 where the Doctor berated her for working with UNIT) is one of many reasons I can't go back and watch RTD's run and haven't been able to stomach his work since.

Anyway, did any of you see the new Ghostbusters teaser clip? I could swear they just decided to make their own version of the Adipose.

    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
