Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis star in VEGAS, a drama inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a fourth-generation rancher tasked with bringing order to Las Vegas in the 1960s, a gambling and entertainment mecca emerging from the tumbleweeds. Ralph Lamb (Quaid) wants to be left in peace to run his ranch, but Las Vegas is now swelling with outsiders and corruption which are intruding on his simple life. Recalling Lamb’s command as a military police officer during World War II, the Mayor appeals to his sense of duty to look into a murder of a casino worker – and so begins Lamb’s clash with Vincent Savino (Chiklis), a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own. Assisting Lamb in keeping law and order are his two deputies: his diplomatic, even-keeled brother Jack (Jason O’Mara) and his charming but impulsive son, Dixon (Taylor Handley). Ambitious Assistant District Attorney Katherine O’Connell (Carrie-Anne Moss), who grew up on the ranch next to the Lambs, also lends a hand in preserving justice. In Vegas, two powerful men – Lamb and Savino – are engaged in a fierce battle for control of the budding oasis, and for both of them, folding is not an option. Nicholas Pileggi, Greg Walker, Cathy Konrad, Arthur Sarkissian and James Mangold, who also directed the pilot, are the executive producers for CBS Television Studios.

This period drama/western might actually work where Playboy Club & Pam Am failed. Being on CBS helps. I'll check this out for sure.

Jason O'Mara is in the cast? That guy is like the male equivalent of show-killing Paula Marshall.

Out of the four new CBS shows, this seems to be the best one (though I still don't think it is a gem by any means). Partners and Elementary seem to be the worst.

Ratings will tell if this show last. I taped the episode but the previews didnt really make me jump up for joy.

Agreed...wasnt there already a show named Vegas or had part of that name that flopped on CBS?

I agree they should have gave it a better name. There was also a show on NBC called Las Vegas.

It would be a waste and a mistake to run this as just another crime procedural. All too often, the opportunity for character development is lost when a show is run as a weekly procedural.

I thought this show was horrible. The writing was trite, dry, and full of stereotypes, Even worse, it had lots of bad acting which surprised me because its cast is so talented. Even Michael Chiklis, who is amazingly talented, was dire and cringe worthy at times.

Well the show did well last night with a 9.3 rating but a lower demo number than last years show unforgetable.

CBS won the night big time with NCIS shows leading the way.

I was hoping it's demo would be a bit higher, but overall not surprised by it's ratings. CBS is usually more patient with it's dramas than it's sitcoms. I imagine unless the ratings collapse, CBS will give it time to try and raise those demos a bit.

I enjoy this show, although it is certainly far from among the best shows in TV history. Sadly, the chances of cancellation seem very high. (The high stage costs along with the salaries the two lead stars receive make this an even more likely candidate for cancellation.) It has been moved to Fridays in a last ditch effort to save it (since it failed on Tuesdays).
