All Soaps: Great Actors who justified Horrible Roles or Bad Writing

  • Member

I thought it would be cool to talk about truly amazing actors that had to play dish rag characters and made them work, despite completely wretched writing/characterization. As well as to also talk about actors who you think truly made a storyline shine even though the basic premise of it on paper was completely unjustifiable or an utter trainwreck. Who are some actors in daytime that you think really persevered through their stories and gave amazing performances despite being given absolutely nothing (or little) to work with.

I agree with the bolded. TS/RJ did have decent writing towards the beginning. To me that only highlights what utter garbage they got at the end. A lesser actor might've checked out but Stickney never did.

Which makes his written account of his time on OLTL all the more infuriating.

Preach. I'm so grateful he finally told his truth.

I know she became a hate figure at GL, but I loved the work Ellen Wheeler did as "Crazy Marley" in AW's last few years. That story was often terribly written yet she made it so good. Kim Rhodes was the same. The writing for Cindy always sucked, aside from some moving speeches and monologues. But no matter what, my heart went out to Cindy.

Hey Marceline. Do you happen to have a link to that article where he told about his time on OLTL? I have never been able to find it.

As I know B&B best:

Katherine Kelly Lang. Good actress. Everyone are surprised she's never been nominated for an Emmy. I am not. The material sucks. Which also explains why I dislike Brooke most of the time.

Off the top of my head? Heather Tom as Kelly Cramer. Still my favorite in the role.

Chris Stack as Michael McBain. Pointless character, wonderful actor.

Erika Slezak and Kassie DePaiva doing anything on their show. There was a lot of heavy lifting, let's put it that way.

Marcy Rylan.

On paper, casting a 30-year-old actress to play a 22-year-old character is a horrible idea, especially when her (God awful) 15-year-old predecessor was seen in the role just weeks earlier. But it's forgivable because Rylan is so damn good. She fit in from day one and instantly clicked with the rest of the cast, much like Billy Miller did in the beginning. Easily MAB's best hire to date.

Where is MissLlandviewPA to pimp Fiona Hutchison? unsure.png

Fiona often did it with both Gabrielle and Jenna.

I'm right here! wink.png

Tell me about it. Some of the things Gabrielle did--like say, this:

There are actresses that would NEVER be able to make this work. But, she made this and so many other things work. Simply the best, my Fifi. wub.png

Ditto Kassie DePaiva. All those years of less than sub par stories, but bless her heart, she soldiered on. Blair grew so much over the years from what she originally was, but Kassie was largely responsible for that.

James DePaiva. Max did a lot of things that may have permanently damaged his character at one point, but at the end, he seemed to recognize his mistakes enough where you saw he could still be a decent person. Jimmy's charm had a lot to do with that.

Josh Kelly as Cutter. There were things he did near the end that he shouldn't have been doing, but JK played it as if Cutter had a lot of guilt over his actions, which put him in a better position than say, Ford.

I'm surprised someone like Carl or SoapBoy haven't mentioned Sarah Brown's Carly, given how some feel she only took off because of SB giving her vulnerability.

Or VMG as Brenda, for that matter. Brenda was putting photos of Karen showering after gym in students lockers in high school, and wound up being something of a heroine. I don't think THAT happens everyday!

In the last few decades of soaps it seems to happen all the time - the nastier you are the more important you become.

The difference between Brenda's character arc from spoiled bitch to beloved heroine and the crap this show has tried to pull since is that her character benefited from growing organically.

Folks are too lazy these days to actually give viewers a reason to invest in a character, which is why today's supposed 'grey' female characters fall short in every way imaginable to Brenda Barrett, Blair Cramer, and Lucy Coe.
