GH: Classic Thread

I have never heard anything about another soap approaching her, but you would think they have?   From the way Vanessa talks, GH is the only soap she is interested in.   It also doesn't appear like Vanessa is really actively looking for work these days.  I haven't seen her in anything, even a lifetime movie, in years.

That would work for me and you know how Vanessa likes those quick 1 year contracts lol.  I really don't think she will join The Gates though.   I would love to be proven wrong, but I have never gotten the vibe she wanted to join a different soap.

https://www.tvinsider.com/1140904/general-hospital-nurses-ball-anniversary/

Michael Maloney interviews Scott Barton, the show’s former publicist, who had previously worked with Elizabeth Taylor in 1985 on the Commitment to Life fundraiser for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), about the Nurses’ Ball, how it came to be, and its enduring legacy.

I just hated the writing for Carly back then. I always sided with her because of whatever behind the scenes games were going on that Sarah Brown was caught in the middle of. Even now, I flinch at the show's idea of what "real" PPD is. I imagine fans who only know Laura Wright's Carly must watch that scene and eat it up.

The irony of that scene is how within a few years Alexis was on the other side, because Guza ultimately had no respect for any female character beyond what type of pawn she was in the life of his beloved Jason.

I appreciate what Sarah did with a script that essentially just had her as an extra.

I don't mean to go off topic, but IMHO, I have hated most of the short-term character returns from the Guza Jr. era up to the present.  Also dissatisfying is the deaths of former major characters off screen when the actor or a good recast are available, like for Jimmy Lee Holt.  I will NEVER forgive Dan and Chris for killing off Olivia Jerome off screen.  That character had the ability to make normally calm, rational character like Anna become unglued, which I found weirdly fun to watch.

I was watching a fall '96 episode tonight dealing with Lois' exit, and the indictment of the Quartermaines - including the Q women, Monica and Lila - was brutal and well-written, if slanted in a way which would of course later become an issue in the next few years. Lois was right about the dysfunction in the Qs, but it wasn't the sum total of who they were or what they meant to each other or how they cared for each other.

What I'm curious about is if Lois has ever reckoned with and discussed this exit and her old attitude re: the Qs in any of the recent episodes since her return - I have seen some of her talks with Ned and Tracy, and some of those scenes are quite good but Lois is really pretty lovey-dovey and copacetic with both of them overall, especially Tracy. I can understand age and maturity mellowing her out, but I really think it's a topic that needs some broaching. Anyone recall anything about this stuff?

I feel like the show vaguely touched on it with some of her Ned scenes, but they have never fully gotten into the reason they broke up.  I have heard Lois talk about Katherine/bigamy more than once though.  Hear me out -I think it's difficult to explain all these years later.  You would have to name check a lot of characters that aren't around like AJ and Justus and explain Ned's role in Jason's accident again.  Not to mention the Q's dysfunction now is mild comparatively to the 90's.  I thought the breakup reasons were flimsy at the time and I am not sure discussing it now would make more sense.  Bigamy?  Forgivable.  Covering for AJ?   Hard no.  And technically, Tracy wasn't around for the breakup (I don't think?) so Idk if Lois has animosity towards her.  She was a part of the long list of reasons for Lois dipping out, but she wasn't really a catalyst for anything IIRC.  YMMV, of course.

Anyways, I personally get the sense that the show is implying the Katherine stuff is the reason they broke up.  It just seems easier to explain.

IIRC she was there for the initial exit in '96 with all the drama surrounding Jax, Ned and ELQ. Tracy was part of the inciting incident.

Blaming it on Katherine is ludicrous and doesn't even line up time-wise. (That would be on the show though, not you lol)

I do think it's something you don't need to get granular about onscreen decades later, maturity and mellowing would explain a lot with Lois. But I do think something could and should be said that she only saw the worst at that time in that nasty situation, and she realizes the Qs were capable of nuance and multitudes.

    •   Thank you! Agreed on both posts. And the comments about Mike Manning are nonsense.
    • I haven't watched yet, but did they explain the current ownership of The Bistro?  Because when RonC was writing, wasn't he applying for work with Sophia?
    • I think Brandon has gotten better in normal day to day scenes, but he’s very over the top when the character is meant to be angry or agitated. I did laugh when she started yelling at Leslie and then when he started to throw all those damn books, lol. He needs an acting coach to work out some of these kinks.
    • I've never found him as bad as some. I think he's always shined in scenes with Vernon, who should be his father. I also think he has great chemistry with Kat and Dani which I hope they tap into more over time. Dani/Martin feel like such a fun and believable Auntie/Nephew relationship.
    • I'm fighting for my life on another board for my husband Brandon and I'll do it here too lmao
    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.
