Does anyone know why the writer (not sure if this was Doug Marland) decided to have Luke rape Laura - as opposed to him seducing her as they later retconned it to be - in the first place? A lot of trouble would've been avoided, IMO, if it'd have just been that instead of having that unnecessary sordid element to their love story - even if it did provide family angst for my JJ Lucky years later.

Hopefully I'm remembering an interview I've read about this before correctly:

Luke was meant to be a short-term character--a man who would brutally rape Laura after having a fascination with her, and be killed by the mob a few weeks later. The fan response to their chemistry is what caused the change.

Doug Marland actually quit because he and Gloria Monty disagreed about how to develop the story. He wanted their story to be taken slower and ultimately focus on her marriage to Scotty, which wouldn't have ended under his pen. He wouldn't have had Luke rape her, either. Pat Falken Smith wrote the rape story and the retcon. Which means that, yes, two women (She and GM) were responsible for this change.
