GH: Classic Thread

I started watching during this period because of Maxie's shenanigans. My roommate was a big GH fan so we watched together. I thought she was so much fun. I grew up with Kirsten as Belle (I was indifferent). Storms impressed me during Maxie's sleazy years despite the misogynistic writing because she was so funny. I thought Maxie and Lulu would've been a great rivalry, but it was clear TPTB favored Lulu (JMB can be a wonderful actress but Lulu was unbearable). I cheered when she finally smacked the hell outta Lulu during the Text Message Killer (My God) storyline. I remember Maxie being so vicious to Felicia at Georgie's funeral that I gasped. I wanted her to win the Emmy that year. Maxie could be gleefully vindictive, hilariously petty, and dripping shade, but Storms had a handle on the character (I never felt the writers did) so I understood why. The other characters were so full of [!@#$%^&*] about who they were, she was clear about who she was. I enjoyed that. The show was abysmal, she was sublime.

HLove Michele Val Jean's comment. This is how you build a soap couple organically!!

Ha! This is framed and on a wall in my house. Kevin & Lucy were my couple. As in they weren't on anyone's radar as a couple till I went to Claire Labine and said what if Lucy decides she needs therapy. Not because she really believes it but because she thinks Kevin is cute. Claire loved it, told me to run with it and that was that. Gosh, I loved writing those two.

I've read somewhere that Scotty was 23, but I think that may have been in 1979 when he married Laura, who was 17 at the time, so nearly a six year age gap. They actually started dating when Laura was only 15, which I've always thought was a bit problematic (but may have been more common in the 70s? I don't know).

The only time when it was okay for a man of 21 to date a girl of 15 was during the Middle Ages -- and that's because, life spans were remarkably short; and if she wasn't married and with children by then, she was considered an old maid, cursed to spinsterhood for all eternity.

Funny to think about now- Monty and Marland told Genie and her father that they wanted to use her to grab a younger audience.  And she was front burner from there until she left after the wedding, often in very challenging material for anyone, let alone a woman younger than 18.  So they wanted that audience but they did not fill Laura’s life up with peers her own age- she dated Scotty, dealt with David, her mother, Rick and Monica, Bobbie and Luke.  Nobody her own age except Amy was a major factor in her early years.

I have a lot of empathy for Genie, you can clearly see when she talks about it that while she loved the actual work, the rest was very difficult.  Maybe if she had an actual teen scene like they do now she would have felt less alone and the show wouldn’t have written her into so many problematic stories.

    • Another lot of skipped episodes to look forward to when the time comes on Videoland. So annoying. They have skipped so many, especially in  season 15 where they skipped 19 episodes throughout the season. Is it just me or is the vault down? It's like a different error message this time so it's hard to know if it's me this time.
    • thank you for uploading the rest of season 12!!! I hope i can get them soon the links down! Thank you again for posting the B&B classic episodes to revisit!!!!
    • Hmm, okay.  BTW, my only problem with Kai & the surgery story is where is this guy's family? And, another BTW, I think I may have inadvertently added to that rumor from last year about a male descendant of Justus Ward. You see, that is an idea I could really get behind! Like I would pay to see those scenes. And, true, I did hear it ... [sheepish grin]

Yes they can. While rare, its not like soaps in the past havent said F that and used flashbacks of a scene even when a recast has been done. OLTL used to do that
    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
    • Yep Edmund and Tad went under cover to infiltrate the... Willow Lake (I think?) old folks community scandal that was exploiting Phoebe, etc.  (Which at one point led to Edmund rescuing Brooke from quicksand--common around Pine Valley I guess

) EDIT maybe I'm wrong.  I found the quicksand scene

But for the story all I can find is Edmund going undercover as the gigolo "preying" on older women, Eduardo (no one would recognize him with that disguise and name ) so the drag must have been.. a different story?
    • But then he HATES the original Heather Webber (Cher's half sister played her, right?) and we know what happened when Robin would step into the role a year after this.  He does seem pretty spot on about actors who show promise otherwise.  It's interesting he knocks OLTL early on (though I loved all the recently released episodes from this era we got) but does give a lot of credit to the actress playing Cathy despite earlier complaining about her story.  And over all, while quite negative, his various pros and cons on the shows sounds about right with what I know of the shows at this time. This was a July dated issue of the magazine but and I know they date mags a month or two in advance--obviously when he wrote this he didn't know Lovers and Friends was gonna go off the air (in May I think).
    • You know one of the soap outlets posed that question just last week: Who do you want Trina with Spencer or Kai? And, of course, the picture of Spencer was NAC. I said, well, a lot. I chose Kai. I said that Spencer had been an entitled brat & that some people valued him over her, when I valued her above all others. I guess we'll see.
    • You're right. The only thing I can think of is if GH finally decides to bring back Spencer.
