Members DRW50
I wasn't watching for most of Higley or Malone II so I can't say how they wrote for her. Before then, I don't remember feeling that - as much as I hated those years - that JFP's era gave Blair any worse material than many others got (there was that trash with Max and then Max/Skye but unfortunately that was pretty much par for the course in that era) and I don't think Tomlin did all that badly by Blair. For me the two worst eras, and by worst I often mean hideously awful, were Labine and RC. RC was hired during the Labine era, or close, so he may share some of her views. Moments like Blair as a quasi-racist, Blair being painted as a bitch for being angry that her cousin killed her late term child and put her in the hospital with multiple strokes, Blair as a pathetic old woman who can only find happiness through a cat, Todd fantasizing about Tea while stuck with Blair, Blair having very little relationship with her kids or Dorian, Blair bleeding to death on the floor as Todd ignores her, and so on. Members oltl1
It makes sense because isn't Christina what Katrina had named her baby girl. Mary is what Jenny named her daughter, but that baby died. Once Katrina got her baby back why wouldn't she give her her real name. If this is where the show is going with it I think it's great. I loved Jenny and never bought that stupid story of her dying in an avalanche while skiing.Brynn Thayer is a wonderful actress who's character had many ties to Llanview and who was a dear of Viki's. Members Vee
The real question is why is it "real" unfair writing when it's Tea having bad luck in story, but only the character's problem when it's Blair? I don't think RC or Malone or a number of others hated Blair. I think some of them quite like Blair, including now (though Higley sure hated her). I just think there were a number of regimes that thought the character could handle virtually any kind of treatment in the name of a story while they busied themselves writing about things they were more interested in. And while I am only somewhat objective, TeamEric, as I stated yesterday (and you did not reply to - still waiting to hear where my "hatred" for Tea is legend) I am not what you describe - unlike you, I just don't see everything through the cracked glasses of a 15-year fanbase war that I have never had any time for or interest in. I can enjoy characters even while critiquing their behavior and seeing two sides of a story. As for Aubrey/Christina, yes, it is random but it doesn't hurt anyone. I kind of like that reach waaay back to the days of the Woleks.
Members DRW50
That's a big part of it, too. Blair moving the plot along. It's more the material she had for most of 2009 that seemed very hostile to me. But then I guess that's something that's been rehashed a million times now. Would anyone who doesn't want to see this thread clogged up be interested in me posting any Katrina clips in the Videobash thread?
Members TeamEric
Ok, thanks for clarification. I didn't see Jack act afraid of Todd but more sullen about working at The Sun and his dad not taking any grief from him. Jack was surprised his dad would yell at him but Todd explained in a touching scene, I am not going to let you screw up your life as I did. Members Vee
Sure, go for it. I like that they're reaching back to the original baby switch, which from what I have seen was very well done over a period of years. Sure, Aubrey/Christine/Mary is fairly inconsequential today, but it adds something to the overall historical texture of Llanview to do this. Members TeamEric
Exactly. The silly compound raid and the prepesterous Irene flashback reveal scenes where horribly panned EVERYWHERE. Yesterday's KA/RH scenes and today's emotional TSJ/FL/AT/KA/KM scenes are getting tons of praise b/c it's classic family confrontations and bonding soap scenes. Members Scotty
They killed off Jenny at Brynn's personal request because she did not want to draw attention away from Michael Zazlow and his battle with ALS when he came back to OLTL. Members TeamEric
The JFP years - I was online and read endless rants including from JDP himself on AOL that unless you were a FOJ (Friend of Jills) you got shafted and RC was a notorious pet of hers so Blair wasn't getting written for, Skye was. I felt some of that was valid, btw. Blair was humiliated repeatedly by Skye/Max. As for RC's years, you mentioned Todd fantasizing about Tea while with Blair yet that was done in a far more humiliating way to Tea on the island and Blair fans cheered. So I can't take that complaint seriously now because it's hypocritical to me. As for Tomlin, no question he adored Blair. He announced it as he decimated Téa to prop up her up. Yet I read endless rants about how he wrote Blair OUT OF CHARACTER as Todd's perpetual victim. Since 1997, I've never read a Blair fan ever voice a WRITER wanted to write for her. Not even Malone II's run thus my question. Thanks for the answer, seriously!
Members Vee
Yeah, Jenny was killed at BT's request, but she said then that they could easily bring Jenny back, and she's right. I would kill to see a mini-Wolek reunion on the show at the end of the network run: Karen, Jenny, Larry and maybe Wanda. You can use them to usher in new Woleks. Members Scotty
They actually referenced that.....she mentioned that Cutter was good about getting money but not at holding onto it. Oh I totally agree....I was just stating why they "killed" off the character in the first place.
Members DRW50
I have wanted for a long time now to see something used to bring back characters like Jenny or Gabrielle. It wouldn't even be that hard with Jenny. I wanted one last adventure, with people like Bo, Viki, going to save her. The problem with the JFP years is that pretty much everyone was so horribly written that I couldn't tell who was or wasn't a favorite. HBS even asked the show to kill Nora off.
