Throwing Out the Recipe for Daytime TV

Is that what viewers want?

The stakes are high for ABC, which has already invested more than a year of preproduction in the show. Kraft, Campbell’s, Hershey’s and General Mills have all bought advertising on “The Chew,” and the opportunities for product placement and sponsorship built into the format are enormous.

ABC plans to challenge Judge Judy (Sheindlin's) dominance in daytime TV with a newer, softer, Katie Couric, the Wall Street Journal observed today (Wednesday). "The plan is to pitch Ms. Couric as "the girlfriend next door" and to appeal to viewers using her experience as a working, single mother," the newspaper said, citing a person close to the program. Meanwhile the producers of Anderson Cooper's new syndicated show, Anderson , are also planning to present him as less serious-minded than he appears on CNN. The Journal says that Cooper will be talking about what he did over the summer on one of his initial episodes, and discuss his "eccentric eating habits, on another. Even his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, will appear on one of the early programs. "People see anchors on a news program as one dimensional," he told the newspaper. "This show is a chance for me to show more of my personality." But Bill Carroll, a programming consultant for Katz Television Group, suggested that the plan for Couric and Cooper may be difficult to implement. "It's going to be tough for both Anderson and Katie to transition from being authority figures to being something of relatable personalities," he said.

Katie Couric was never an authority figure.

Katie Couric is no longer believable as a "girl next door" and has not been since the Clinton era. There's a reason why viewers lost interest in her. It's the same as giving Meg Ryan a talk show and expecting her to be bubbly and perky. Those days are gone.

The man really needs a speech writer or something--he always seems to say the stupidest things. And that's it--he justified soaps dieing not because of any financial reasons, etc, but claimed that audiences didn't want them anymore, and what they now wanted and only had time for in their lives were information programming (if you can call The Chew that...). I think that's what really made fans mad--no apology or statement about having to change with the current economy of daytime tv. It's pretty insulting--and honestly usually in times of economic crises "escapist" programming does BETTER than information and is more what audiences want.

Since the moment these shows were canceled and fans were outraged, post after post by numerous people here have relentlessly tried to distinguish "those soap fans" from mature people who by virtue of not being those soap fans, were "grown up". When the fans wanted Oprah to save the show, it was "oh no, those soap fans need to grow up". When the fans wanted to picket it was "I am laughing at those soap fans, they give us a bad name. I am embarrassed for them" Meanwhile, all the sturm und drang kept the shows names out there and they got saved.

Now here they come, innocently booing some buzzing gnat of a gabfest host who took over the slot their show is on, and here it comes again with "those soap fans" "they need to grow up". If you were to reread the original cancelation thread and this thread in their entirety, you could see how one might mistakenly think there was a bit of self loathing among soap fans, and an ego driven need to distinguish "us" from "them".

I said more power to them when they picketed, and I say more power to them when they boo this woman. Where are you supposed to get out of when you can't take the heat?

Brian Frons is not responsible for singlehandedly dumbing down television and its just not soaps. Look around broadcast television and cable television and its a; reality TV. The network rumored to potentially be picking up OLTL and AMC Bravo is I think 100 percent reality and talk shows. THe same kind of shows replacing the soaps on daytime television, the same kind of shows replacing scripted programming on evening primetime television also. I commend Prospect Park for seeing there is a future here but the dumbing down of television started long before Brian Frons started speaking stupidly.

What did "this woman" do to soap fans? Did she attack them? Defame them? Harass them? Compare that to what soap fans have done to her and the other hosts of The Chew.

Damn right, I want to separate myself from them.

Maybe I'm missing something but why are you putting this kid's personal information out here?

Oh no question there but I do think there are people out there who think Frons is responsible for everythng including global warming. I still believe he's going to be out of a job. I think they are waiting to pull the plug on GH and make him the fall guy. That gets rid of one of many PR nightmares for them and he's such an easy scapegoat. I think ABC is in a world of hurt anyway . ALl their new PT shows look terrible also.

Okay. Kudos for not hacking a college kid's resume. Still...why are you putting his personal information out here? Sorry but this seems really inappropriate. If he was a member of this board or had done some writing on the soaps I might get it but he's just looking for a job like millions of other people. Why should he be opened up to scrutiny?

Frons pitted his two new shows against the soaps replacing them, not the viewers. He came out and said "viewers want information," implying that what (dim) people were really yearning for at 1 and 2 PM were weight loss programs and nebulous how-to cooking/variety/whatever shows. These shows are ill-conceived at best and their presentation, from the initial announcement and wording of his public statements to the absolutely godawful promos, has been condescending and dreadfully done.

I don't like Carla Hall, who I've always enjoyed on Top Chef, being accosted or whatever, and I think it's unfortunate if she was personally attacked, but I don't think it is even remotely comparable to the civil rights struggle in the '60s, nor can I fault people in a studio audience from expressing displeasure at ABC's choices. You can be disgruntled with the soaps for whatever reason you like but the bottom line is that Prospect Park seems to think there's still money to be made in this genre, that OLTL is crushing a lot of the other soaps in the numbers, and that AMC has all the tools to do that same kind of business again someday soon with the right people in place. Chew and Revolution are not going to get those numbers or make that revenue.

We can, each of us, slap together all sorts of fly-by-night little arguments or put all sorts of obstacles up to find a way to play devil's advocate and attack the soaps for being the soaps. They've all failed us in one way or another over the years. That's what television programs do; they disappoint you, they screw up, but they also succeed. We've all not liked the way some stories have gone or how some couples were treated or whatever but the truth is, that's all part of a continuum of events and this kind of serialized drama is not dead or dying. In fact, it's very much alive. It's just transmuting, it's beginning that process here and now. ABC's offerings as its replacements are [!@#$%^&*] and they're not going to work, and pretending they are or that Frons was in the right (which he wasn't) or that we should give these things a second look isn't going to prove any kind of point or make any kind of statement. And why should any of us care about giving these shows a second look? The sign over the door still says "Soap Opera Network." If we don't like soap operas, then what's the point of wasting time?

I'm afraid that some soap fans will want to boycott these companies again and annoy them with phone calls, letters, and e-mails that will get them nowhere...

And it left me shaking my head when people on another board were talking about hounding PP to get them to put AMC/OLTL on cable. Honestly, they should at least be happy enough that they even purchased the licensing rights to the two soaps from ABC.
