A World Apart

Actor Darryl Wells (Tony) also had a role on As the World Turns in 1966.  I suspect that he was intended as a leading man for Amanda Holmes (Deborah Solomon).

He was also on The Nurses, but I suspect that was when The Nurses were seen on primetime CBS.

I just noticed that in the picture with Irna Phillips, that is NOT Augusta Dabney.   It is the late Elizabeth Lawrence (who I had identified in the next picture).

I had assumed (and I bet that a lot of other people did also) that when William Prince joined the show, that Augusta Dabney did also.   Evidently, she did not.  He only appeared on two soap operas without Ms. Dabney (his wife), and they were The Edge of Night and Search for Tomorrow (his final soap opera role).   She appeared on many (Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, The Guiding LIght, Loving, and the serial General Hospital) without him.

I can confirm that ABC did not renew Irna and Katharine Phillips contract after the first year as they were not happy with the ratings. The Hollands as previously stated were the replacement writers. Variety notes they had recently worked on All My Children. Is this well known?

The Variety article states that Irna was preparing a treatment for a screenplay-her first venture into movies.

Interesting that Irna's final 3 shows-Another World, Splendored Thing and World Apart all saw her depart within a year.

My understanding is that Irna's involvement with DOOL was several years before the show aired, maybe the early 60's, when the proposal was put together, as a nightime serial.

She was listed as story editor but Peggy Phillips was first headwriter before Bill Bell.

I think the story editor title was pretty much honorary and she had no real involvement with the show,

There was a lawsuit at some point initiated by Irna about her connection to the show.

Concerning Irna Phillips and that California show (Days of Our Lives), my understanding is that Ms. Philllips was there at the creation of the program but never worked on it.   She co-created the show with Ted Corday and Allen Chase.   I have even heard that her only contribution was either the title or the prologue or both.

That is my understanding. The Days of Our Lives treatment was written in 1961 so by 65 when it was optioned Irna had long been out of the loop.

The story editor credit she was given in early episodes was just a token to acknowledge her earlier involvement.

PS Nice to see you posting again Danfling! I always find your recollections of past soaps most interesting.

it’s been a while since i read ken corday’s memoir, but from what i remember, he said that it was irna who encouraged his father to create his own show. she is credited as a co-creator of days… i know there were some lawsuits filed over this (one, i think by her daughter, after irna’s death). i believe irna’s son is still receiving royalties.

i also recall that when ted was diagnosed with cancer shortly after days… premiered, irna helped to take up the slack. but, when bill bell took over as headwriter after ted’s death, irna took that as a personal betrayal and, according to bell, the two never spoke again.

    • I found it to be a rather odd way to deal with a character departing for parts unknown.

Luckily, EJ and Johnny, and pretty much every other character saved today’s episode.  I didn’t expect Javi to be the one to save Sarah though, and I don’t mind it at all, because if it means that Javi is finally going to get his own identity/character, away from his douchy bf, I’m all for it. Javi’s scenes would’ve been a lot better had it not been for him. EJ and Johnny were the best part of today. Their conversation hit a lot of important beats and I’m so looking forward to seeing them play out. And now that EJ knows that Johnny is going to work for Xander, that opens up another dynamic to their storyline and to the Kiriakis family storylines as well. Tying them all together could be really good. There are so many story possibilities that can come out of this. And I thought Carson Boatman did a pretty good job again too.  I also liked that Johnny was there to comfort Chanel after everything that happened with Sarah. They’re so good together. But I do have mixed feelings about Chanel possibly forgiving Johnny so quickly. Hopefully, the question that she asked him at the end of today leads to more conflict for the two of them.  And yeah, still no changes in Alex’s character lol
    • Awesome, thanks so much for taking the time to grab this episode. I had a quick review of your rip because I was curious why it was 700MB and 30 minutes. The first 10 minutes of the episode is 3169 (opening credits at 5 minutes and again at 15 minutes). I thought we had the full HD version of ep.3170 on the YouTube channel, but it appears they added the wrong episode but labelled it 3170.

    • That's a name I haven't heard in a minute. Thanks!
    • Well, since I'm still up unexpected past my growing-into-it bedtime. lol.   I finally got to rewatch Monday's. I even rewatched Friday's to take it all in. Now that we got the reveal and hit the climax of the SilkPress Sheila storyline, now we get to watch the aftermath and/or turns that come with its climax. So far, so good. Friday left us with three cliffhangers. And what I found surprising was how I felt about them over a rewatch.    I know some of you all felt a way about the dialogue during Kat vs Eva. I remember liking it more the first time around and it was nice for them to have these scenes to establish more of a frenemy vibe for them going forward. That still held up. But I found myself agreeing with you all about that dialogue. lol. Still, it was nice to have both of their POVs.   Second up was Silk Press Sheila vs the Duprees. And I was happy to get a brief spat with Dani in there. But the rest standouts for me was Anita and Martin. Haters can hate and given the tail end of the episode, I will agree to a fault, but Brandon has impressed and he was on fire on Monday and had great subtle work on Friday. And that subtle work made it all the better. Like I believe I said when I was watching...BC has a much better grip on his character and seems to be realizing what his tics are so has started to be able to know when to turn it up and when to dial it down. And for the most part (emphasis on most), he got that. Meanwhile, TT was giving fierceness, and I was here for every minute of it. Her reading SilkPress. Her being quip about it. Her 'BE STILL.' Ooooo she had a chokehold on me as Anita gave what I was expecting her to SilkPress. WORTH THE WAIT. I also loved Vernon's CHOOSE SILENCE. I wonder though if SilkPress will figure out Martin's condition from her observing Anita and Vernon with him.   And speaking of worth it...Oooo YES Nicole vs Ted was worth totally worth it. Oooooo I knew DD would nail it, and it was all so well done. The fight between the part of Nicole who is a therapist vs Nicole as a woman who wants to express how she feels. And being so angry. And how there would be moments when it would shoot out of her. And how she would restrain herself. But how she felt she should not be restrain. Just the levels of processing and layers. And DD played it all so well. I do wish Maurice gave just a little bit more, but overall, I thought he did a good job even if it was just Ted coming across as a deadbeat and not at all redeemable. And Kat being there for her mother was so beautiful.   Minority, but I love the montage though yes, it did run a little long. Given how the Duprees like to bond (and also as I mentioned from my own very recent family experiences), it did not seem out of place to me.     That said...let's see how the aftermath worked in today's episode. Overall. Cuz RC can be hit or miss.
    • I wonder whose brilliant (

) idea it was to do an almost complete rip-off of the "who killed Tom King"-storyline. That's some quality style writing right there.....
