It didn't happen, which is why I posted the word "almost!" The All My Children producers were initially not pleased with the performances of Ruth Warrick as Phoebe. They were too dramatic, as she was playing Phoebe as a strictly dramatic role.

The threat of dismissing Ms. Warrick is well discussed in her autobiography. She began playing Phoebe in a new way, looking for humor in the scripts and bringing it out; therefore, the need to replace her with Ms. Stoddard was eliminated.

Thank you.

Matthew looked a lot like Norman Reedus.

I wish I could see Dorothy on this show.

Just for clarification purposes, in her autobiography, Ruth Warrick does discuss TPTB's disappointment in her initial interpretation of Phoebe Tyler on AMC.

Warrick initially infused a silly ditziness into the character, until a director confronted her with the fact that Agnes Nixon was not happy with that interpretation. Nixon wanted Phoebe Tyler to be more of a serious, formidable presence in Pine Valley. Warrick had been unaware of Nixon's displeasure, and when she asked why no one had ever mentioned it before, the director replied that he had given her "skippy little hints" on how to alter her performances. Her response was, "You're the director...DIRECT!" From then on, she imbued stronger qualities into her portrayal of Phoebe, and made everyone happy enough to keep her around for 35 years. :)

In this photograph, I easily recognize Dorothy Lyman and Tom Ligon.   I should recognize the other two, but I do not.   Who are they (characters and performers)?
