One Life to Live Tribute Thread

This is just a suggestion, but I don't think that classic AMC & OLTL discussion should take place in the Cancelled Soaps section anymore. A more appropriate action would be to move these threads to the Discuss the Soaps section and rename them (something like) "Classic AMC (or Classic OLTL) thread." If classic AMC/OLTL discussion is to remain in the cancelled soaps section, the best thing to do would be to rename the threads "AMC [OLTL]: The ABC Years."

I realize that is just a trivial matter. The only reason why I brought this up was because I was quite vocal about AMC/OLTL being moved into the Cancelled Soaps section in the first place (while they remained in the Discuss the Soaps section). It would be hugely hypocritical of me to not say something now, after they have been brought back to life.

Dr. Polk was a recurring character utilized by One Life to Live and All My Children. After he "cured" Viki's split personality disorder (we did not term it DID in the 60s), there were other crises in Llanview warranting his therapeutic prowess. He attended to Viki again in the summer of 1971 when Marcy Wade was drugging Viki and attempting to convince everyone that Niki Smith had returned. In February of 1972, Meredith Wolek needed therapy for post partum depression and the death of one of her twin babies. In January 1973, Viki slept with Joe Riley while married to Steve Burke. She and Joe argued, causing Viki to crash her car. When she awoke, she thought it was 1971 and had forgotten everything that happened in between, including her marriage to Steve. Dr. Polk helped her recover her memory. Almost immediately at the end of this story, on All My Children, Kitty Cole had a miscarriage and tried to commit suicide, prompting treatment by Dr. Polk.

At this point, Dr. Polk was played by Norman Rose. During the original Niki Smith storyline, Donald Moffat played Dr. Polk. Moffat is remembered as Edgar Halcyon in Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City. Norman Rose last appeared on AMC and OLTL around 1974. Afterward, the psychiatrist angle was downplayed, and later, in 1976, Polk was no longer necessary because Will Vernon had been created. Dr. Polk was resurrected for Niki Smith's real return in 1985. James Douglas played Dr. Polk then, and it was his Dr. Polk who was eventually murdered by Tracy James.

Yes that and the fact that the actress Joanna Dorian who played Viki before her had just been let go the day before. I remember Erika saying she went into the stuidio and said she was playing Viki and everyone said "No you aren't!"

It looks like they are again throwing Viki into a big storyline...this time with Dorian and The Banner. I'm thrilled because The Banner hasn't really been apart of OLTL in years! Remember they had that one scene in 2010 with Viki and Tina that looked like an office they just put together. She hasn't really had any Banner storylines in maybe 10 years. The Banner was such a big part of Llanview history...Viki's history. it's where she met Joe and worked heavely with and against Clint before they married. They did several storylines at The Banner during their marriage in the 80's and early 90's. and the late 1990's when Mel Hayes, Kevin and Cassie all worked at The Banner with Viki and Clint. Dorian and Mel were married in the Banner "city room". who can forget the scene of Kevin walking into the Banner in 1999 and Viki was playing with her fuzzy dice with "girls just wanna have fun" playing on her stereo. but then in the mid 2000's, they pretty much dropped it. Viki would occasionally say she just came home from The Banner or that she was going but there were no scenes. They had Kevin working there for a while in 2003 but they dropped that pretty quickly.

    • The ones that exist are 10x shittier than the casino they exit in and have wood paneling from the 60’s?
    • So today on The Young in the Restaurants, Nick arrives at GCAC for a workout at the never seen gym when who should be at the table oddly placed in front of the entrance but Phyllis. Nick joins her and Stafford begins acting. Hand gestures, weird line readings, repeating phrases and odd facial expressions-just her normal shtick- but for script reasons Nick finds her manner unusual. Meanwhile Kyle  and Audra meet up at the empty CL and begin bantering. Audra boasts the Vibrator has a great range of products that will disrupt the marketplace-yes in a matter of weeks,Ms Charles has set up a complete company-staff,R&D, product approval, marketing, distribution, w./o ever leaving a restaurant. And more incredibly,Kyle is worried about the threat to Jabot. They need to put a laught track with these scenes.
    • I hated Mick, his mama and their whole raggedy ass family so I’m glad Dyer keeps yapping, hopefully the character remains gone. I never commented on Sonia and Bianca’s exit but I thought it was well done, never been a Sonia fan but it was touching seeing her Bianca ride off with Bex and the new baby. The episodes with Martin’s funeral and Sonia comforting Stacey then Stacey and Ruby finally coming to an understanding were great as well. Nicola held it down for a few weeks with this killed Harry’s girlfriend story and the actor playing Harry has improved quite a bit, I like him and Gina together and his friendship with Kojo. I was hoping for a bigger renovation for The Vic but I do like the refurbished look. The episode where they first opened back up was really good too, great use of Nigel, Billy and the history of East London I really love the stuff they’ve done with Avani and the actress has realy shined but I hate nuVicki’s perv step son and weirdo husband. I really wanted Ravi to whoop both their asses. I’m so happy Cindy is back, I thought she’d be gone longer. Loved her helping Lauren give birth, I felt bad they still kicked her out at the end. Her blackmailing Kathy and Ian was well deserved and I like that she snagged The Albert and still exposed Kathy’s affair with Harvey. Not a fan at all of Harvey and Jean but I did enjoy all the fallout, especially Kat dragging Harvey, Freddie hugging Jean and making her cry. Ive really enjoyed the Clenshaw era so I’m sad to see him go but I’m willing to give the new show-runner a chance. I wonder how many more exits and new additions we’ll see.
    • Same. I love like a lot of the other characters she has so much potential and possibilities. I also love she is not a shrinking violet. And most definitely not perfect.   Lol. Okay, I give you that. But I'm a horror fan so I ain't hating on her for being one, too.    Well like I said when this story started...those kind of backrooms DO exist even now. The workers even run to get the gamblers food orders so they can completely focus on losing all their money the game. I appreciated Randy clarifying that the other day when Mona was asking him about the machines. Of course, that said...I guess the question is if we will see the rest of the casino.    Same, but especially the bold.
    • One of the things that I found refreshing about Ryan's Hope when I discovered it on SoapNet was that for the most part, Delia was the only female character whose life seemed to revolve around getting and keeping a man, and it was clearly viewed as a character flaw. Because by the 2000s, I feel like fully half the female characters on the soaps at that time were obsessed with trying to snare some vacuous lunkhead. Up that to like 85% of them if we're talking Days Of Our Lives or Passions.
    • Yes, a few months before Wanda De Jesus, actually. Shortly after the Dobsons took over again, Rosa just magically reappeared as if she'd just been offscreen in the Capwell kitchen for the past four years. I just started watching this from the beginning again last year and I will agree with past posts that there really does seem to have been a reboot of sorts in January 1985. To me, it seemed like the four performers who really seemed to set the tone for the new wittier, more sophisticated direction were Nicolas Coster, Louise Sorel, Lane Davies and Judith McConnell.
    • You're right about the potential many of those stories could have had. The execution was more of an issue. Something never clicked for me in Angelique's present-day adventures - some of them I actually found very irritating due to the slanted writing and her voice being overshadowed. It took the Leviathan story for me to enjoy her in that timeline. I wish they had just left Peter/Vicki to the past and used that to inform who Vicki became when she returned, instead of bringing him back.
    • Thanks @slick jones I appreciate the interviews you share.
