Carl, that was Frances Foster (Gertie in the infamous dog food meatloaf episode of Good Times).  Unless of course you meant that Nelson subbed at some point.

In the 8th grade, we went on a class trip to NY and saw a show with Novella Nelson and Seth Gilliam at the Young Playwrights Festival.  Nelson played an abusive alcoholic grandmother with a mouth like a sailor.  She was so poised and articulate at the talkback, my classmates could hardly wrap their brains around this whole "acting thing".

Thanks.

They brought Niki back way too many times and even they seemed to see it by this point as we instead got Viki pretending to be Niki and so on, but they'd just gone to the well long past the point of saturation.

I still tend to prefer any Niki pre-1995 though.

In retrospect, Niki Smith was a double-edged sword.  On the one hand, her unpredictability allowed the writers to go more places with her than they could with Viki.  But, OTOH, because Niki wasn't "real," I think the writers (especially, the ones who worked on the show after Peggy O'Shea) tended to see her more as a comic-book creation, checking such things as rationale, believability and plain good taste at the proverbial door, and, in the process, trivializing both Viki's alter-ego and the reason why Viki created her in the first place.

I've always wondered whether it might have been a good idea to give Viki a long-lost twin sister (and ES a regular, second character to play), thereby circumventing the need to bring back Niki, or any of Viki's other alters, whenever it was clear that Viki was in a storyline rut.

Rauch seemed to use Niki to do things Viki couldn't do psychologically. It's an interesting idea but one which increasingly felt garish and forced onscreen.

I think Malone's decision to make Niki nothing more than a sex-addled bimbo was short-sighted and led to some hideous, unforgivable writing choices by Dena Higley down the line.

    • I'm hoping that the new studio might have more space, meaning extra sets could be permanently erected. Perhaps the current  set issues are due to limited space available at Television City as it shuts down for the redevelopment. But if more space means spending more $$$ we might be stuck with the current situation no matter where they move.
    • Thanks @P.J. If my math is correct, Jordan Clarke runs were 1983-1987, 1989-1993, 1997-end.
    • I was/am mainlining both the Dream Season and Season 7 of KL together, since that was the year of their big creative swap. That's the most I can take of Dallas consecutively. But I've been very preoccupied with other shows and work IRL and I need to get back to it after a long break from my Knots binge.
    • Wk 1 95/96 MSW moves to Thurs, Cybill takes the Sunday slot. Thurs 8-9pm NBC Friends #3 20.5/33 The Single Guy #6 19.2/30 CBS Murder She Wrote #55 9.3/15 ABC Charlie Grace #74 7.6/12 FOX Living Single # 78 7.2/12 The Crew #80 7.0/11 Sunday 8-9pm NBC Mad about You # 15 14.6/23 Hope & Gloria #35 11.7/18 ABC Lois & Clark # 38 11.4/18 CBS Cybill #49 9.8/15 Almost Perfect #65 8.1/12 FOX Space Above & Beyond (2nd hr of 2hr episode) #51 9.5/15 60 Minutes was #19 so a lot of viewers didn't stay for Cybill. On Sunday, Sept. 24, CBS finished third on the night, and its performance among 18 -49 year olds was worse than it was with the older skewing Murder, She Wrote in the time period last year.  So moving MSW was a foolish move at that point. It was compatible with 60 Minutes and would probably have finished Top 20-25 for the week. They should have left Sunday alone and concentrated on other nights..
    • I’ve been watching Knots and FC rather compulsively for a while now. Currently in fall 1983 with both. I had Dallas in there, too, but I am rather shocked at how stale that show gets after Jock’s death. Meanwhile, I can spend hours in the vineyards and in the cul-de-sac.
    • What will actually change though? Does this mean the sets will be different too? Or how exactly is this gonna look like to the viewers?
    • I'm not sure Passions is the model to emulate here.
    • Passions had Chad sleeping with his cousin nephew Vincent, ironically played by Daphne Duplaix (disguised as Valerie)

    • @Errol confirmed JFP is back in a non-producing role.
    • Same tbh. His brother got all the attention as he got older and hotter but Eric I like best. I need to get back to this show.
