OLTL: Discussion for the week of January 10

That's news to me.

What I have heard is that OLTL wants to bring both brothers back but is generally either forbidden from doing so with Kevin or in the case of Joey, handicapped. But they have their own problems as well, obviously. I get that Frons may be leaning on what is written, but the Joey story onscreen, while not horrific, is not exactly brilliant by any stretch of the imagination. It's not a winner. It could be with some heavy tinkering - you could make people go nuts to see Aubrey busted on her wedding day - but first you have to make them care about Joey and even Kelly.

I think they hedged their bets on both Stacy and Hannah, and hoped that they might be able to make the characters work, until they couldn't. The Hannah back and forth was particularly embarrassing to watch, because Hannah was two-dimensional and Fahy wasn't good enough, she was no Susan Haskell and I felt like they were always just wasting my time with the laziest, quickest redemption story ever. There was a lot of habitual line-straddling, to paraphrase Charlie Murphy. With Kim we were definitely supposed to both love to hate and root for her, and I personally did. That was on the strength of the actress's performance and the writing for her with Clint, a combination that Crystal Hunt, Meghann Fahy, and Terri Conn cannot begin to match up to since they simply could not make their characters shine beyond incredibly nasty and/or mediocre writing. Why Kim has not been recast remains a mystery to me.

Conn's acting here is pretty vapid, but that fits Aubrey. You give her enough dirty deeds and you have a fun story for a few months. Her best chemistry has actually been with Jerry ver Dorn, so why not let Clint take his enemy to bed before realizing how dangerous she is and how he is just trying to make up for the hole Kim left in his life?

I can't believe how stupid they are making Bo. All for Inezzzzz, the most boring drip I've ever seen. Yawn! Aubrey is as worthless as Stacy and Cutter is a sad SAD imitation of Jared, played by a medicore (at best) too-short actor. The show should do a natural disaster storyline where Inez, a couple of the Ford brothers and Cutter and Aubrey all die. Not even kidding. I think it would rock. The only people I see enjoying Cutter are the ones who are easily impressed by his smarmy good looks. I'll pass.

Ryan Lavery alone managed to single handedly made me quit watching All My Children. Considering that I put up with Babe Chandler shoved in my face for years, that's saying something. Then again, as horrible as Babe is, Alexa Havins is a much better actress than Cameron Mathison.

As for Kevin, I can totally see Brian Frons thinking that Dan Gauthier is sexy. We all know how much he loves showcasing Trevor St. John, JPL, Michael Easton, and especially the actors who play the Ford brothers. Brandon Buddy was a favorite of his too, actually. From what I heard, Frons and RC were actually trying to bring back Dan Gauthier. I remember reading several sources about how those "focus groups" hated him. Probably the same focus groups that hated KISH.

Terri was interesting when they wrote an All About Eve story for her as a scheming b!tch. Then her initial obsession with Simon and comic moments were entertaining. When they started to make her a heroine, make her vulnerable, etc. she checked out, and she has never really checked back in. Some of her work at the end of the show was very self-aware and took me out of moments I wanted to care about, like Nancy's memorial episode. The best work I've seen her do in recent years was when Katie's husband Brad was killed.

ATWT basically catered to her in its last years, and on OLTL, which isn't doing the same, she seems to just sort of be there. It doesn't help that things like characterization or consistency are going to be out the window.

That could work, but I'm afraid it would end up with psycho Clint terrorizing Aubrey, and Cutter saving her.

    • I totally agree with this, as most of you seem to. Mary Carney was at least competent and reasonably likable; I just feel like she barely had anything of substance to do before she was abruptly given the hook. And I get the backstory of Kathleen Tolan having done a play with Helen Gallagher, but...at any point did they ever actually READ her before they greenlit her? Because...OOF. First time I saw her on SoapNet was right when this GODAWFUL actress named Charity Rahmer played Belle on Days of Our Lives for all of three weeks before she was mercifully recast; her line readings were straight out of a Charlie Brown special. I remember thinking Kathleen Tolan could have played her mother! In the Frank/Jill/Delia triangle, Delia WAS the one who was cheated on, so I got why she was upset and thought it was perfectly valid in theory at least, but of course it was blown up to Wagnerian proportions including falls involving staircases and tricycles. But with Pat/Faith/Delia I had no sympathy for her...especially because it was mainly with Catherine Hicks's Faith and I really liked her.
    • I was going through those episodes from 1984 and early 1985 before they were taken down. Some of the older characters, like Don and even Tom, looked a little out of place, like they were on the wrong show. But the newer characters were fun. It's too bad they lost the character of Melissa. I guess Jennifer took her long-term place on the canvas.

    • The black and white episodes of the show are very special. An atmosphere the color run loses. Dark Shadows was filmed live-on-tape. They could do a retake but it would be very expensive. I think there was a claim that if actors wanted a retake they would curse. There was also a rumor that at one point Joan Bennett accidentally said "Hollywood" instead of "Collinwood" and that necessitated a retake.

    • Loved this IG post from Ambyr about how she and Trisha work together. You can tell these ladies go above and beyond the script, and that they really trust and enjoy working together. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DJpJufFPOQ2/?igsh=MXBmcWs0YzIwaXVhNA==

    • It is a shame that more characters didn't go the ATWT-Barbara route and make the ingénue into an antagonist. Sort of like they did with Liza/Hogan/Sunny, less successfully. It is a credit to ATWT's creativity that breathed life in that character for years after she was fighting off bulls in Spain.  But, a character like Liza can only have so many true loves and high jinks on the high seas.  They need another reason to be in the story. Liza's wealth, as well as her acumen to see through fraud, was fertile ground for tons of stories.  But, I feel like the business stories for Liza were always about her being easily overwhelmed, rather than exploring things like her leadership and managerial skills.
    • STFU!! Dante!!! This nonsense of blaming Gio is just ridiculous! Alexis and Lucky are becoming so unlikable. Why are the writers writing these characters so poorly?
    • Keith still comes off younger to me. I thought he wasn't that bad for his first day.
    • To be fair, they were only recently step-siblings.  Their parents married within the past few years.  And, Draper's father Ansel was not coy about the fact that he married Raven's mother, Nadine, for the money. And, Raven's sort of sticking it to April that not only can she have a baby (April has a heart condition that makes it difficult for her to carry a child to term), she could also have April's man, if she wanted him.
