They seemed to want to test people on air first before signing them to a contract. Bill & Susan Hayes even both started out as recurring. That all changed around 1980, when people started getting contracts right away. Susan Flannery refused to sign a contract for two years. Although she's stated in recent interviews that she didn't sign until her last year on Days in 1974, the paperwork disagrees with that. The contract guarantees papers from 1968 prove that they finally forced her to sign a contract around the end of 1968, just as Michael was born, so I guess at that point, they wanted to make sure she was locked in for future storyline and couldn't just walk away. But as soon as the show expanded to a half hour, and all the actors had to sign new contracts, she immediately left and then only ever did B&B. So I guess she was happy with the quicker half-hour format and stayed on those throughout her career.

This is from a 1979 "TV Dawn to Dusk." The headline is misleading because Bill didn't do anything except appear in a scene with her when she had a bit part on Days. He did mention it in his book though so she obviously made an impression. He said it was shortly after Doug got out of prison (so that would have been 1970).

Thanks for posting the article!

I posted about her scene when she passed away in 2009. She was in the September 18, 1970 episode (episode # 1230):

"One of Farrah Fawcett's earliest acting roles was on "Days of Our Lives." On the September 18, 1970 episode, just a year after getting into acting, Fawcett made a one-time appearance on "Days" as Diana. Bill Hayes (Doug Williams) discussed Fawcett's appearance on "Days" in his autobiography, "Like Sands Through the Hourglass": "Doug flirted with every female he met...To me his most memorable conquest at Sergio's [a Salem club] was a gorgeous nineteen-year-old with natural blond hair that cascaded over her neck and shoulders. The blonde came on to Doug, introduced herself as Diana, Goddess of the Chase, and looked at him expectantly. At the piano, Bill Horton [Edward Mallory] was left with his mouth open as Diana and Doug glided out into that hot September night with only one purpose in mind. The actress was Farrah Fawcett, and in just five lines, her charisma and innocent sexuality had jingled every guy in the studio."

Thanks so much for finding that article. Farrah had faded somewhat but was still a fairly big name in 1979. That she did an interview with a soap magazine (and one that was on the way out) is a real surprise. She seems to have had nothing but good memories and was very pro-soaps, instead of being ashamed. I love her Dark Shadows anecdote.

She's right about the value soaps provided for young actors. Another reason to mourn their loss.

    • @Soapsuds Thanks for posting Night by night Mon 8pm The Rookies edged Gunsmoke but attracted younger(more desirable) viewers.NBC failed with Born Free/Smothers Brothers (how many different series did those 2 get??) 9-11pm  Maude/Rhoda/Medical Center dominated on CBS,but Football and Movies were competitive on an occasional basis. ABC tried  SWAT/Caribe later in the season and the former worked for them. Tues 8-11 pm CBS all the way Good Times, MASH, Hawaii Five O,Barnaby Jones. NBC had the fading Adam 12,Movie and Police Story mmm...don't see that listed? ABC Happy Days, which ABC decided to keep despite lackluster ratings, the Movie of the Week and Marcus Welby-once pulling big numbers but no longer. 8pm NBC had a new hit with Little House, easily beating Sons and Daughters, which was axed and replaced with Tony Orlando, which did much better. ABC had That's My Mama and the Wed movie. 9pm Cannon was the lead here as Lucas Tanner failed to capitalize on the LHOTP leadin. ABC continued the movie. 10pm Manhunter started strong for CBS but petered out and was cancelled. Petrocelli manged to beat Get Christie Love, which was replaced by Baretta-no ratings winner but ABC decided to renew. Thurs Another CBS night with The Waltons and a movie. ABC counterprogrammed with Odd Couple/Paper Moon then Barney Miller/Karen NBC did even worse with Sierra and replaced it with Mac Davis which improved ratings quite a bit. However, it was moved to 9pm for Sunshine/Bob Crane 9pm Some good numbers for ABC with Streets of San Francisco fending off Ironside,Archer and Mac Davis. 10pm Harry O had a slim victory over Movin On Fri 8-11 NBCs best night Sanford/Chico/Rockford/Police Woman. 8pm CBS had high hopes for Planet of the Apes but it bombed. Replacement Khan did even worse. Paul Sand and We'll Get By were tossed in at the end of the season. With poor lead ins the Friday movie didn't deliver. ABC's odd line up saw Kodiak flop, Six Million dollar Man struggle and Texas Wheelers  quickly cancelled. Kung Fu was brought in @8 and Six Million moved to 9. Then Kolchak took over at 8 and Hot*l Baltimore/Odd Couple 9-10. Despite controversy Hot*l flopped. 10pm ABC tried Kolchak then Baretta and finally Get Christie Love Sat CBS lead  with #1 AITF then Paul Sand/MTM/Bob Newhart/Carol Burnett. Paul Sand lost too much of the lead in so CBS spun off The Jeffersons and it was a smash. NBC did OK with Emergency (which beat Paul Sand on occasion, thus hastening that show's demise) and a movie. ABC was a disaster with New Land/Kung Fu and Nakia all failing. They introduced a movie @9 and moved Kung Fu to 8. Sun  NBC  with Disney and Mystery Movie (Columbo McCloud, MacMillan and Wife/Amy Prentiss)did well. ABC flopped with Sonny Bono and recovered by moving Six Million Dollar Man from Fri as a lead in to the movie. CBS hoped Apples Way would be another Waltons but no, so Cher did what Sonny couldn't. Kojak and Mannix successfully finished out the night. Two other shows on the ratings list were Adams of Eagle Lake starring Andy Griffith. Only 2 episodes aired and did well, so I'm not sure what happened there. As for The Law it was a series follow up to a 2 and a half hour NBC special movie .

    • Trust is very easily lost and very hard to re-build.
    • Oh, I know it was. I was just talking about how it's not giving me parallels to Caroline dying. It's really as far from it as possible.  But about the foreshadowing - Hahahhahah. Yes. And you missed one - Liam googling - "what is cancer"...
    • GH 2-17-21 Denise Alexander's last appearance https://www.instagram.com/p/DJdjXgwJ1Ez/
    • @Maxim This Liam dying out of the blue was crafted in a hurry for three reasons: 1. To facilitate JMW's leave 2. To prop Steffy - 'Oh, Steffy has so much grace and moral superiority that she ignored everything that swine HoLo did to tell her for the sake of their daughters. Queen Stephanie would be so proud of her!' 3. Distracting Steffy enough to give Lunacy an easy way to slither into Finn's life. Once Luna discovers that Lame is dying, she'll play that card: 'Dad, life is too short and precious!' If this was an intentional story, we would've had the typical B&B foreshadowing - Liam faceplanting into a bowl of pasta, Lame missing meetings, being forgetful. Instead, Lame does an impulsive quick quit and $B doesn't even care enough to make a single attempt to get him back? Please.
