I have never gotten Jessica's popularity or Jessica/Josh.  Josh is fine.  First actor is fine.  Second Josh is not nearly as good.  Jessica has always been a drip to me and the DID was just a way to make her more exciting, but she's not.  I don't know if it's Jean Bruce Scott or the writing because on paper Jessica should be an awesome character.

It does sound like Days was hoping she would be the young ingenue that would bring in the younger viewers and raise the ratings. But it seems like both the acting and the writing, especially under Nina Laemmle, just wasn't there. And once Pat Falken Smith left, there didn't seem to be much interest in Jessica, and Joshua too anymore.

I feel like Days tried with her.  She got interesting backstory/parents, a decent love interest, and a lot of story.  It might be all the writing/production shifts, but Jessica/JBS never sparked the way the show was hoping or she should have.  I don't blame them for losing interesting.  Jessica wasn't terribly likable.  And Josh was too old for her lol.  Idk, for some reason I think Donna would have been more interesting in Jessica's stories (outside Alex/Marie as parents).  If I recall from beebs recaps there was another character pre-Jessica that they were setting up to be Marie/Alex's daughter and they dropped her, but instead of recasting they created Jessica and gave her the same personality traits and story lol.  I think it's a combo of all these things that was a failure and it's a shame because she should have carried years of story.  But I also think Melissa should have carried years of story and she did, I guess, but it was mostly unmemorable.

The casting of Jessica was a problem.  Jean Bruce Scott came across as dowdy and depressed-more like the lead ingenue's sensible best friend. And she didn't have ingenue long flowing hair!!

And I found Stephen Brooks too old and dour. He should have been more of a troubled teen/early 20's.

In fact when you look at Nina Leammle's characters Joshua/Liz/Kellam/Maxwell/Tod/Leslie -they were mainly over 30-not really ideal when you are trying to jazz up a show that was already crowded with characters in that age group.

Maxwell could have been way younger-an ambitious right hand man to Kellam. Joshua could have also been younger. Tod and Cassie didn't get much of a look in anyway.

And the two younger Horton's who were popular - David and Mike - were immediately marginalized.

Different casting would have had an effect on how the stories played out and how the audience  responded.

Dowdy is the perfect word for Jessica and she was a huge stick in the mud.  It's one thing to be sensible, but it's another to be too scared to have fun.  I don't know why these guys were so into her.  Her mother, the NUN, had more sex appeal lol.  I am sure JBS is a lovely woman, but it was bad casting.  It's telling they never really brought Jessica or Josh back (outside making their son a psycho).

I would agree Stephen Brooks was too old.   I didn't think he was too dour.  I liked him.  Granted, most of the Josh stuff I saw with him was via Marlena edits, but he seemed like a decent, likable guy through all the Kellem rape stuff.  That being said, it looked like the show was going to pair him with Marlena not a teenager so it was a lot easier to like him.

It is a strange choice to bring in a bunch of over 30 characters when trying to revive a soap.  And I am not sure why you bring in Kellam as a villian when you already have a similar villian in Alex.

And if you were trying to do a teen scene I don't know why you get rid of Donna.  Donna is annoying af, but we spent years watching her BS while she was the ONLY teen on the canvas and then you bring more people her age on only to dump her.

David/Mike just seem like they have one bungled storyline after another.  Saddling Mike with a dying wife for so long and David having a kid when Julie was about 35 seems all bad.  It's almost like Days was purposely skewing to an older audience.

    • That's what Julie Hanan Carruthers is doing for BTG at the new studio in Atlanta, but JHC is credited.
    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
