Several years ago, I came across some newsgroup postings about AMC from throughout 1989, and it was truly bizarre. All about "the new Dixie actress" (I'm guessing they didn't use the nu- prefix then) who wasn't going to last. Heh. And "this radical new titles sequence."

I think I did that too. Oddly enough it was like late-1980s posts about Loving, mostly recaps typed up around then. A very mean part of me thought, "I wonder if they were the only people watching Loving..."

Can you imagine what soap viewers in their late teens might feel like if they find some of the stuff from the mid-90s, like the "Brooke English/Bobbie Jones Slapping Society" and such...

LOL I remember an early AMC website that was all about the anti-Brooke. "This is how Brooke's fans see her," and it was that gorgeous picture of JB with long hair and a white gown, and then it said "This is how we see her," and it was one of those screwed screencaps that was taken mid-sentence. Hilarious.

The anti-Brooke website was a classic. My favorite was the "Choose Your Own Adventure" with Brooke, which included Brooke not knowing her son's name, Brooke making Laura cry, Brooke mentioning her dead daughter Laura over and over, BROOKE ENGLISH HOMELESS SHELTER being in huge neon lights at the front of the building, Brooke getting drunk with Marian, Brooke trying to "turn" Michael Delaney's boyfriend, etc.

AW would probably be: ANOTHER producer out...

And we'd probably get a, "Why do soaps never get new writers? Enough Depriest/Marland/Lemay/O'Shea/Winsam/Falken Smith/Slesar/etc."

followed by

"Want a new writer? Fine. YOU take Jeff Ryder!"

I've tried to get into Mrs. Nixon's new serial, All My Children, but I'm just not liking it. I was immediately put off upon the mentions of Vietnam, which were just...I can't even fathom why it would be necessary for a serial to address such things in the daytime, when children are liable to watch. What's next? Abortions? Interracial relationships? Or much worse, homosexuals?

I was a fan of Mrs. Nixon's work on The Guiding Light and Another World, but even then she trod on very thin ice with infecting poor Bertha with cancer. Very tasteless and vulgar writing. I hope Mrs. Nixon knows that if she plans to have any long-term success in daytime without the guidance of Ms. Phillips, she's going to have stick to the status quo. Daytime viewers like myself have no interest in seeing on our serials what we see on the six o'clock news. The sixty-second segments there are more than enough for me to form a full and valid opinion on such things as the Negroes, the homosexuals, the feminists, and those so-called Americans who fight against the American institution that is war.

Perhaps Mrs. Nixon's obsession with these obviously sensational storylines is the reason why the characters are lacking any interesting traits. Erica Kane, especially, shows no promise other than breaking every one of the Ten Commandments, and that could never make for an interesting serial. Hard to believe the woman who created this character also created Another World's Rachel.

It's unfortunate Mrs. Nixon feels the need to introduce these things into daytime serials. Frankly, I feel bad for her. It's obvious to me, as it should be to daytime viewers everywhere, that this type of serial will never succeed. Forty years from now, All My Children will be but a distant memory whose significance will be summed up in a single clause in a single sentence while the likes of Search for Tomorrow and The Edge of Night remain some of the most talked-about and watched serials on the air.

Signed,

Mrs. Theodore Grunt

I'm having too much fun with this
