AMC: Actor tapes his last scenes

Makes one wonder if the move to LA was really worth losing someone like DC. Cause I doubt we'd have lost him if the show was still in NY.

We'd lose him sooner rather than later. The man is 72 years old. It sounds like the move to LA gave him a clear signal that it was time to go, but he said that the grind of a soap and learning so much dialogue was taking its toll, regardless. If AMC was in NY, he'd be around for another year or two, tops, I think.

Thing is -- AMC would have worked him to the death, and he knows that. He's 72 and still very frontburner. The average 72 year old soap actor doesn't get the kind of airtime he does. At 72, Ray MacDonnell was a 2-5 episode per month presence. Adam was too powerful of a presence to get the Joe Martin treatment. I think DC knew that there would be a time that he would just have to step completely back -- he was not a working til death kind of actor.

I always felt that was one of the reasons he moved AMC out west.

Highly doubt Frons was the one who spearheaded the LA move.

I don't know the appearance numbers but I can't remember the last time Adam was a strong onscreen presence. Starting from around 2002 or 2003, and especially when Jacob Young and Bobbie Eakes and Alexa Havens came in, I think Adam's seemed increasingly irrelevant. And Stuart basically disappeared, then you had Adam/Annie that made Adam even weaker. I have to wonder due to the budget issues and whatever else if he and Ray McDonnell would have been retired even without a move to LA.

DC played more of a supporting role during the babyswitch era, but I think he became a VERY strong presence following the babyswitch, especially during the Adam/Krystal era and Krystal's pregnancy. I mean, jeez, no one can dispute that he was a major player during those times. And this last year? Adam suffering the death of his own brother, discovering he killed him, and hooking up with Annie Lavery? Yeah, I'd call that pretty leading material.

Yeah, to say that Adam/DC has been neglected over the last five years is a big overstatement. Adam's a major, major part of the show still, and all of the Chandler family drama has (rightly) revolved around him for the most part. It's totally understandable that a 72-year-old man would want to leave all that behind for a less hectic/demanding daily life. He should be commended for his years of service and allowed to move on to the next stage of his life.

I dunno, if DC said it was easier if the show had moved to CT, I can't see him having gone anywhere till he had too. The show in it's own way basically forced him out(thanks to the move)

Granted, I believe AMC could and should have stayed in NYC, but I'd much rather have seen them move to CT than to L.A.

None of those stories were about Adam, in my opinion. Kendall had to be hidden away so she wouldn't go to prison for Stuart's murder. Annie took care of a feeble Adam and made out with his nephew and spent his money as everyone gawked or raged at her. Adam having to beg David Hayward for Viagra just to reinforce how sad he was. Ryan/Zach/Erica gaslight Adam into having a major heart attack. JR going through yet another story about how noble and long-suffering he was to put up with a terrible father like Adam, and isn't it good that he has the pure love of Mabe to get him through. Most of Adam's presence at this time was limited to be written as a confused old man who was often on the verge of keeling over. He just seemed like a plot point most of the time.

I don't think he was a plot point. Plot point would be Marian attempting to gun down Kendall, but accidentally shooting Marissa instead.

I think she served a short plot moment, whereas Adam served longer-term reactions. Adam suddenly being accused of killing Dixie, just so we could see JR and Tad flip their lids, with no real followup to make sure viewers knew he didn't kill Dixie. Adam being drugged and having a breakdown so Annie could help him and he could give her money and power and cause Ryan to flip out. Most of what Adam did when Pratt was around seemed to barely be about him, even losing Stuart.

I bet Frons is happy though <_<

I always felt that was one of the reasons he moved AMC out west.

I've always felt that it was the *main* reason they moved west. They probably didn't intend to lose Thorsten Kaye, though, and I'd imagine they still don't. In another few months, Susan Haskell will probably be out as Marty on OLTL, and they'll work their fannies off to get Thorsten Kaye out west and back on AMC. So telling and sad that they wouldn't consider making a fraction of the effort for David Canary.

I wonder if Michael E. Knight will be next.

I don't think they'd pack up an entire production and move it across the country, ditching the people who aren't able/willing to make the move (mostly talking about the crew), just because the tyrant driving the bus wants all of the old people off. I don't put it past Frons, but I like to think that somebody at AMC/ABC would have the cajones to not do that.

I'm sure that ABC knew that there would a lost of crew and some cast when it decided on the move, but I am sure that its priority was cutting production costs to buy AMC a couple more years.
