December 9, 200916 yr Member From Variety: "As the World Turns" won't do so much longer, as daytime TV continues its march away from scripted sudsers.CBS confirmed Tuesday that "ATWT" would end its run next September, after 54 years and more than 13,000 episodes. "ATWT" reps the last soap opera at the networks to be produced by the once-prolific production arm of Procter and Gamble. CBS recently ended the run of another P&G sudser, "Guiding Light." "We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show is not being renewed," said exec producer Chris Goutman. "It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show's loyal audience." In a statement, Procter and Gamble's TeleNext Media said it would explore finding a new home for the show. "We are proactively seeking a new outlet to carry the show, and are open to exploring innovative formats and relationships that will enable the future success of 'ATWT,'" said TeleNext media senior VP/managing director Brian T. Cahill. But like its attempts to keep "Guiding Light" on the air, the company may find it difficult to keep "ATWT" alive. The networks have been downsizing their stable of daytime dramas in recent years while also dramatically cutting their remaining shows' budgets. With "ATWT" gone, just one daytime sudser will still be produced in New York: ABC's "One Life to Live," which itself has been on the bubble for some time. (The Alphabet recently moved its other New York soap, "All My Children," to Los Angeles.) Although "ATWT" will end its run, Eye won't give up the time slot to affiliates. Like it did with the "Guiding Light" slot, the network will look at replacing the soap with either a talk show or a gamer. CBS was likely emboldened to yank "ATWT" after its post- "Guiding Light" success with "Let's Make a Deal." That game show costs a fraction of what it took to produce "GL," and has bumped the time slot's ratings by 5%. Nonetheless, CBS execs said it was a tough call to cancel an institution like "ATWT," particularly after more than five decades on the air. "The almanacs will show 'As the World Turns' as a pioneer of the frmat, a hallmark for quality with its numerous Emmys, the launching pad for many television and film stars and a daytime ratings powerhouse for parts of three decades," said CBS daytime senior VP Barbara Bloom. "ATWT" has received 58 Daytime Emmy awards through the years, and helped launch the careers of thesps including Dana Delaney, James Earl Jones, Parker Posey, Meg Ryan and Marisa Tomei. Show first debuted on April 2, 1956 as a half-hour sudser, moving to an hour in 1975. Show also spawned the prime-time spinoff "Our Private World," which ran briefly in the summer of 1965. Irna Phillips created "ATWT." Separately, insiders confirmed that another daytime entry will shut down soon: "The Bonnie Hunt Show" will complete its two-year run in May. Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution is behind the strip, which airs on NBC stations in the major markets. Hunt informed her staff of the news on Monday.
December 9, 200916 yr Member EXACTLY. It's 2009. America has a BLACK First Family yet Daytime refuses to invest in minority couples or anything beyond a few isolated individual token characters. GLBTQ viewers are tired of being fed social interest stories that are dropped once the newness & critical praise wears off. Women don't want to watch women under 40 being victimized daily or Women over 40 being told they're worthless unless they accept that their lives are over. Even OUTSTANDING writing can't overcome a lack of commitment & incorporation of social change. Amen to everything you said. There is a hungry audience out there and ain't nobody getting fed, because for whatever stupid reasons, TIIC can't get over their own [!@#$%^&*] and see beyond their warped view of what's interesting or what the viewers "want". FULLY integrated and representative shows should have been a reality at least two decades ago. How tragic, pathetic even, that soaps will be history before there was even ONE asian mom and dad with 2.3 children and a kooky Gramma. What's most frustrating is that soaps are a 52 weeks a year, 5 days a week operation and there is AMPLE time for experimentation and broadening the canvas. It certainly has its kinks, but there are lessons to be learned from OLTL.
December 9, 200916 yr Member These people should be sauteed for even thinking that "The Bonnie Hunt Show" being canceled is the same as ATWT being canceled.
December 9, 200916 yr Member Meow. Moonves is so bitchy. I bet he is tired of hearing from whiny bitchy irrational soap fans. I can only imagine that he shakes his head in disbelief when he gets yet another batch of mail from a rabid fanbase demanding that their couple be put back together or their favorite character not be fired. Moonvres must be counting down the days until he can get rid of soap fans and their obsessiveness for good. Goodness know I would feel that way.
December 9, 200916 yr Member What does he mean only the "SPecial Soaps" will survive and then he goes onto talk about the end of "client owned" soaps. Yikes.

No one reads that. No one sends that. That was so last century.

He brought CBS up from the gutter after they lost the NFL to Fox in the early 90's. A move which CBS still hasn't fully recovered. Yeah, it sucks ATWT was canceled, but Moonves is a network scheduling genius.

Every single fan campaign sends some cutesy item that they send in the regular mail. I'm sure his assistant gives him a copy of the kooky things that soap fans send.

December 9, 200916 yr Member Every single fan campaign sends some cutesy item that they send in the regular mail. I'm sure his assistant gives him a copy of the kooky things that soap fans send. I should have corrected that and said: No one in their sane mind would send that. Still, I stand by what I said in that he don't gives a damn about it and no one really has time to read it for him.
December 9, 200916 yr Member What does he mean only the "SPecial Soaps" will survive and then he goes onto talk about the end of "client owned" soaps. Yikes. P&G or Telenext was a CBS client that produced shows for CBS. I think that's what he's referring to. He's probably right, network owned shows, daytime or nighttime, will last longer because there's no middle man to pay.
