Help!  This Archive thing-a-ma-jig....how does one get there to watch old GL eps?  I'm a bit thick-headed.  Thanks.

If you're talking about the Vault, here you go :)  This is where I watch GL now. Just follow the link/instructions, it's pretty easy to find/follow!

I swear, by the 90s (after his divorce from Alexandra), Roger was the only one that stayed faithful!  LOL

I can't believe Vanessa and Ed had an affair!  Why would Maureen want to be friends with Vanessa?

Vanessa and Ed hooked up pre-Maureen. Mart Hulswit was Ed. It was less of a relationship and more casual sex. It never went anywhere and was promptly forgotten after Vanessa became a Saint. Vanessa was very sexual when she was first on the show, seducing Tony as well.

1986 SOD Best and Worst edition

Thanks for posting this.

Since I recently watched 1986, can't say I disagree with anything said here. They pretty much nail it on the storylines they touch on. (Ugh, Phillip's novel. A strong contender for biggest time waster in GL's history).

But I wonder if this is a review of the entire year, as there is no mention of:

Chris Bernau's return

Robert Newman's return

That horrible summer camp storyline

That horrible Andora gold storyline

Beth's disappearance/"death"

Vanessa's search for her child

The restart and quick dissolution of Reva and Kyle's relationship

The intros of Johnny Bauer and Chelsea Reardon

I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff. Maybe they just ran out of room. 😂

It’s more of a review than a recap, which would’ve also been in that issue separately, probably two pages.

Oh, sure, but a lot that was left out was pretty bad. 😂

I will say, the one thing that I liked about that year was Alan and India's relationship. I found a few more episodes on the German channel that weren't on Spauldingfield. CB and MKA had great chemistry. I really enjoyed how they cautiously circled each other and messed with each other in between the flirting. Never will understand why they didn't really run with it.

Thank you for posting.  Seems like this review could have been what happened in mid 1994 and after for me.

Poor Lillian...HB and Hawk?  Yuck!

@DeeVee Would only books go over in detail the storylines of all the years the show was on?  Is there a good resource that covers all the storylines in detail?

I know that there was this guy that was so into Guiding Light and soaps that he did a research paper on it and grew up to write articles/reviews of soaps for a living.  I bet he has all the magazines that go over the storylines for the 1970s that we will never get to see.  I read that Procter & Gamble got rid of their Production company, so there is no one to even ask for episodes not captured on VCR.

@anthonymolchan I read about that here somewhere, but all I recall is that Michelle wasn't named Michelle when she was born?

I just recently mentioned that on this thread, I believe. Maybe it was a different thread. When Michelle was born, she was named Berta Bauer Ramsey. Why "Berta" instead of "Bertha" is a huge mystery. She was called B.B. for short. Every angle of that name was an abomination. Thankfully, the writers seemed to realize their mistake and Claire renamed her Michelle Bauer in less than a year. They thankfully didn't call her B.B. for long.

With all the garbage TGL foisted on us in 1986, I will always contend that the most egregious was how the show handled the passing and service for the late Bert Bauer.

HOW did I forget that? That was definitely the worst of the worst.

It was a travesty. It still makes me mad to think about. TPTB clearly had no respect for the character, the actress, the history of the show or the fans, to dish out those episodes. Epic failure.

Thanks @Soapsudsfor the article. I don't think anyone can match the wretchedness of the Cain storyline so I don't know how they overlook that. My word that was near unwatchable. It's so weird to me how Calla/Simon/Jesse gets so much flack and yet from little I've seen they are the least bothersome parts of 1986. There are so many other parts of the show that are just awful. I've seen some scenes with Lisby Larson's Calla where she was knocking it out of the part. I'm seeing these scenes in isolation so take my comments with a grain of salt, but Larson was miles better than a majority of the cast in the scenes I've seen (her admission to Lillian about her relationship with her husband and the STD was stunning). So many GL actors in 1986 were either phoning it in or completely over the top.

@MLH If you're looking for another source on the storylines, I recommend the anniversary books. They’re an enjoyable collection—accessible, well-priced, and full of nostalgic charm.

Personally, I prefer Schemering’s writing style. It feels more engaging to me, though I can’t say which author dives deeper into the research. Errors are inevitable, given the limited access to primary source materials. Still, both books offer a fun and entertaining recap with photos.
