I think her FEELINGS were 100% valid. She had every right to be upset and angry.  Oprah was also being totally unprofessional. She should not have been fangirling over the ABC people.

The way she handled it was wrong, though. Not just unprofessional, but kind of childish.

What she should have done was gotten the attention of the producer (who was also not doing their job) during one of the breaks and complained. That would have solved the issue without histrionics.

Well, you know how much it pains me to agree with Kim. lol  But while in an ideal setting, Oprah would've listened to her producer about her guest's concerns, would that have really changed Oprah's mind set, or did walking off drive the point home and signal Kim was serious? It would be interesting to see if any of those segments are up at utube and see if it really changed. Or if Oprah just threw out a softball to Kim and then went right back to the AMC ladies.

I tried to do a quick search, but there aren't many Oprah episodes out there sadly. The only one I could find is when she had all of Erica Kane's husbands on the show to reunite with Susan Lucci, which of course included Larkin Malloy.

I agree, Oprah should have given equal attention, and I've seen other talk shows be biased which always annoyed me. But also agree Kim could have been more professional about it, which she ultimately admits in the book (although part of me wonders if really true since she wanted to gossip about the story to fans anyway haha).

@alwaysAMC Thanks for all the time you are taking on these summaries. I feel like any time you write these out I pop up with a dig about Kim, but these I mostly just enjoyed...and I appreciate her honesty about her behavior on Oprah.

(I never even knew she was on Oprah)

No problem at all, happy to do it and glad y'all enjoy them. :)

But Billy better than Josh in bed? Yeah, I buy that.

In my own head, I'm totally opposite :P  Although I haven't seen Billy in action that much from back in the day, but I envision him to just lay there while Josh knows what to do and is passionate. Haha, hopefully that's not too R-rated for the boards :P

Fans enjoyed Jeffrey/Reva? GTFOH.

My late mom and all of her GL watching friends in the Chicago area loved Jeffrey/Reva as a couple... that they thought he seemed to accept her for her without wanting her to change.  I think they related to her because they were in the same boat/close to the same age as the Reva character... and most of them rolled their eyes at the Josh/Reva coupling.

What's funny was my mom went on a rant when the show was ending about how Pam Long ruined the show... and I asked her what characters/couples she loved on GL.

She said she loved Billy/Vanessa (told her Long created that coupling), she loved Tony/Annabelle (told her Long created that coupling), she loved the 4 mousekateers (told her Long created that), she loved Fletcher.. and his couplings with Claire, Maeve, and Alexandra (told her Long created those), and she even said she loved Reva's siblings Roxie and Rusty (told her again Long created them)... and then when she mentioned loving India + Lujack/Beth.. she said 'let me guess... Pam Long created them).

While I think Pam Long/Gail Kobe did damage with some of their decisions... the ratings remained in the top 5 (hitting #2 in the summer of 1984, and #4 during the climax of the Infinity story in November 1985).   And part of why the ratings didn't faltered too badly was because she wrote compelling/interesting stuff... some in a trainwreck sort of way.. others in memorable ways.   And it seemed to appeal to the under 35 viewer at the time.

Now had there been more then basic cable as an option during that time.. ratings would have probably been weaker for all soaps... so GL could get away with some of their decisions because the options weren't as vast as they are nowadays.

Well, Reva and Josh get more explicit love scenes (and honestly, at this time on GL I'm sure it was risque..) and honestly, except for a flashback of what led to Dylan's conception, Billy only slept with two women on the show, Vanessa and Nadine.

So even though it's a rather limited field, let's just say Billy seems like he'd be fun in bed. Whereas Josh would be playing "mother may I?"

LOL...funny story about your mom---I'm sure I would've loved her! And not just because I'm a Billy/Van fan!

I think sometimes people hang on to names. And with all the writer turmoil in the mid'80's, it's really hard to pick out one to blame. (I had no clue before I started following the thread how bad that situation was.)

There's even a part of me that understands preferring Jeffrey over Josh. Mostly because Josh/Reva had been riding that rollercoaster for nearly 20 years by then (when you subtract their time off the show).  But I just couldn't stand Bradley Cole.

Big Billy? Definately better in the sack than pretty boy Josh. He is funny, doesn't take him self too seriously and can damn well keep you WARM on a cold midwestern night!  I also think that Billy would satisfy Reva's sex drive better, i.e. just fun sex, then out for pizza and beer, where Josh would satisfy the "romance" and wooing and worshiping thing Reva needed.  Josh says, "How was I, did I satisfy you?" where Billy slaps you on the ass and says, "Damn you're as good as always!"

I remember that Oprah and as much as Kimmer and Reva annoys me with the "Look at ME" and airtime hogging, she was OUR annoying air hog! I remember thinking, "Oprah, you do know you have Reva Shayne Lewis on, a woman who can suck a golf ball through a garden hose and go bear hunting with a stick, while you have brittle skinny Lucci..who cares about her!"

Well, something put that smile on Vanessa's face. :)

Not to mention, any woman would probably find herself fighting Josh the next morning for mirror time.

Heading out for dinner/drinks, but posting the next chapter summary from Kim's book since some folks asked about her thoughts on her Emmy history:

Chapter 13 - Kim talks about her Emmy nominations/wins and episode choices to submit. She said for her first nomination in 1985, she originally thought she would submit the “Slut of Springfield” episode, but unfortunately the infamous fountain scene came at the end of the episode, so all the meat was at the end whereas the majority of the episode was full cast party scenes, and she thought the Emmy voters would get bored and say no before they got to the end of the episode, so she found 3 other episodes to submit. She said she had only been at GL for less than two seasons at the time, so she was clearly the dark horse against Lucci, Hall, Strasser and Spencer and didn’t expect to win. She figured she would go have fun, bring her entire family and enjoy the party. She got a hair company to do her hair with all the extensions put in, making her look like the white Patti LaBelle. She thought she looked amazing. But, when they called her name as winner, her first thought was “what did I do to my hair”, and extensions kept falling out as she walked to the stage. Her one shoe fell off so she threw the other out (I think she was probably really enjoying her free wine at the table haha). She said she didn’t prepare a speech, so she ad-libbed and rambled. She said being recognized by her peers at that level was amazing, considering she was just fired from OLTL 1.5 years beforehand. After the awards show, the VP of ABC Daytime hugged her and said they were so happy to have “discovered” her. Kim was shocked because she said hello, she was on The Doctors for 4 years before that, but what she said to the exec was “Sure you discovered me and then you fired me. I went to another show and won an Emmy!”. She ends with ‘as the old saying goes “Success is the best revenge”’.

She said her first scene to shoot after winning was another full-cast party and she had to sit at a table with Beverlee, Maeve (again spells her last name wrong), and May Kay Adams. She couldn’t get her line out because she was so excited, so after the 8th take, Beverlee says “You give the girl an Emmy and she can’t remember a [!@#$%^&*] line!”.

Her second win in 1987 - just gave birth to her son and was still nursing, so wore no bra, but needed room to breathe, so she felt more conservative yet slightly trashy still. She said she felt really good about her material that year and assumed she was the one to beat, if the voters truly voted on performance and not popularity. She said one episode was in black & white when Reva was being written in a 20s cabaret and singing.

Next win was 1990 which was bittersweet because she was leaving GL and didn’t know if she’ll ever be back in daytime. She thanked the Academy for giving her three awards, one for each of her children.

After 11 nominations in total, her 4th win was in 2006 which was most special to her because she could have it for herself and be buried with it (since her others were going to her children).  However, she didn’t feel like her storyline was strong that year (Reva going through menopause, which “went nowhere”), so she felt like that win was more for the show than herself.  Towards the end of the chapter, she says she got 10 nominations (so 6 losses), which contradicts the 11 nom number she says previously.

She said she didn’t think it was gracious for the press to always focus on Susan Lucci’s loss while interviewing her about her win.  In 1998, she got her husband/son to choose her episode reels and they cried over how sad the episode was when Dolly the Clone died, so they submitted that, but she lost to Susan Lucci (“oh well”). She said she was sure she would win because the material was good (even if the fans supposedly hated it so much). She splurged and bought $600 tickets for her family to attend, including her kids for the first time. When Susan’s name was called, her kids jumped up and said “You’ve got to be kidding me! My mom was robbed!”, and Kim was so happy the deafening sound of Susan’s applause drowned out her kids. Kim said she was very happy for Susan and Susan has always been gracious, kind and lovely to Kim. She said Susan’s husband Helmut was a doll.

The Oprah thing: Kim Zimmer had every right to be annoyed. I don't know the best way to handle it. I tend to be very confrontational so I probably would have just confronted her in the break and said, "The rest of of us can leave if you just want an all ABC show."

If the rumors about Mr. Malloy are correct, are we to assume Zimmer undressed because she  felt safe with him? Likewise Geary felt he could disrobe for that reason? I don't think it makes a difference. I think it's highly unprofessional and gross.

Uhm, am I ignorant, but I thought the actors just submitted the scenes they were in, not the entire episode.

The scene she must be talking about shooting next is the "Proud Mary" sing with John Bolger. So...a little bit of irony there. She does seem happy.

This is funny to me because I deeply resented Long back in the day. In hindsight, I feel that I was very unfair to her. For one thing, some of the decisions that upset me were probably not hers. We know a lot of the firings were Kobe's work.

When she was left alone to do her thing she could write very good stories. The women characters were much more complex and interesting than they were under Marland. She was very good at using backstory to propel and enhance the present story. She created some incredible characters, like Billy, Mindy, and Alex. We ding Zimmer here incessantly, but as long as Reva was just one of an ensemble, I really enjoyed her character.

When she left the first time, the drop in quality in the show was SO apparent. So, yeah, I feel now like she deserves credit for keeping GL up there, and certainly was not the villain who crashed it.

I thought GL got better after Kim Zimmer 1990 departure (at least until Summer 1992), but unfortunately the ratings until Summer 1991 did not reflect the quality of the show.

The way actors submitted their episodes (and the numbers of episodes) changed year to year. Sometimes, they had to be edited. Sometimes not. I think at one point they had to submit three episodes and then it changed to two. I don't know what it's like now.

I don't know about Pamela Long's tenure on GL to have an opinion one way or the other. I saw some of her work and I liked some, didn't see a lot (did not see her first stint), and didn't like other stuff. I know more about her tenure on SB which I saw all of and it was atrocious. I don't think I saw any of her work on OLTL. My major problem with her is a decided lack of humor and witty dialogue, but maybe I just haven't seen the right stuff.

I liked the Calhoun produced GL right after Zimmer left. That's my favorite time of GL. I think it was firing on all cylinders.
