January 1999 continued

I’ve been introduced to the Beth/Matt/Vanessa triangle. I love that I’ve already watched a handful of episodes and I’m still being introduced to new storylines/characters. Matt is a handsome guy don’t get me wrong but I just wouldn’t expect these women to fight over a man like him. Is he rich? I guess I’ll find out more as I watch. I just about peed my pants when Beth tripped and fell on her way out the door after aggressively kissing Matt, lmfao! I forget how feral soaps used to write female characters. It’s entertaining none the less. 😛

Beth was a very desperate woman and seemed to just need a man at all times. She had also been in a very abusive relationship a few years before which left her traumatized, although the show did not properly address this. I think part of this story was also done to spite Maeve Kinkead, as the producer at the time had a bad history with her and was horrible to her (allegedly). I think this may have also replaced a potential bunk-up between Dinah and Matt that was teased at the time (Dinah buys matching robes for herself and Vanessa and then tries to trick Matt into hooking up with her). "Matessa" fans were not thrilled.

Does Kim Zimmer write about some of the years she lost (1986, 1998, 1999) or wasn't nominated (1988 and 1989).

Not that I've read yet. I'm at the midway point of the book, so if she does eventually talk about her Emmy noms/losses, I'll jot it down and post.

Kim Zimmer always showed appreciation for Larkin Malloy so  she didn't have a problem with him as she thanked him years after he left in her acceptance speech for her third Emmy win.  Also amusing Larkin Malloy was in Susan Lucci's clip when Zimmer won her second Emmy so he was not unemployed for long.

Haha yep, he went over to AMC as did Susan Pratt! They were married (Travis and Barbara Montgomery). It's so funny to me because I've been reading y'alls posts and found it amazing both of them were on GL together just before they came over to AMC.

Well, Reva never let her sheets cool off. Her barring Kyle from her "golden ticket", makes perfect sense to me---Josh was available.

Haha ;)

No matter what you may think about Kim Zimmer or Reva, Zimmer's reel for her third win was fantastic. I'm not surprised she won especially against the Jeanne Cooper twin nonsense. That's what a reel should be, and when you compare it to the stuff Susan Lucci would submit, it's maddening that Lucci was nominated so often and would take slots from worthy nominees.

@alwaysAMCI assume Larkin Malloy and Susan Pratt were a good fit on AMC because they were over there for a number of years. I am not judging them for the mess that was 1986 GL because yeesh.

These 1999 episodes feel slightly Days-esque. Don’t get me wrong, it’s soap that definitely feels like it stands on its own with what it has to offer but I wonder if the success of 90s DOOL had an influence over the underlying tone of the show during this time? It seems especially evident with characters like Carmen. She’s giving me Stefano DiMera vibes but the female version, and Michelle reminds me of a young Carrie Brady. The Annie and Alan relationship also reminds me of Days but I don’t know exactly what to compare it to.

Yeah they were a good fit at AMC. The Erica/Travis/Jackson/Barbara stuff was pretty good and popular. I know this is the GL thread, but while we're talking Pratt, this is one of my all-time favorite slaps where Erica slugs Barbara much later in the 00s:

The only good thing about.the clone storyline was Joie Lenz as teen clone Reva (Cleva).  I thought RN turned in some good scenes as he was reliving his teen years again seeing reva as a teen again.  In hindsight it was totally grooming and came off as gross.

I was not a fan of B&E as headwriters.

Yup I definitely noticed the desperate part pretty quickly. That usually makes for a very exciting character though so I’ll look forward to seeing more of her. I don’t know how to feel about Vanessa yet, I’ve only seen her a couple times.

BC in her second run might as well have been Reva Jr.  I know you have to put Beth in relationships, but most of them are really twisted.

I would've paid to see Matt and Dinah hook up. Of course, leaving Vanessa free to walk out on his ass and never look back. I'm actually surprised Rauch didn't do it, and if Moniz had stayed, I'd lay odds he would have.

Phillip seems very selfish. Susan is obviously being a manipulative little girl but he seems to be completely against letting Harley have a relationship with her daughter. The only thing that matters to him is him and their baby together.

I’m waiting to see/find out if Drew is a psychopath in her pursuit to make Jesse hers. Either way she seems very selfish. Her and Danny seem like a better match for eachother but Michelle is cooped up at that mansion with him. Oh how I missed all the fabulous 90s sets

Hahaha...  Dinah tried hard to sleep with Matt when she joined in 95, but thankfully it never happened because Matt wouldn't give in. It was very close though.

What happened between Rauch and Maeve? That's interesting that Rauch was Zimmer's all-time favorite EP and then Maeve didn't get along with him at all.

Rumor has it, it went back to her days on Another World. Allegedly, Rauch acted inappropriately, and P&G separated them, sending Maeve to GL. It is interesting to note, in one of those Locher room interviews, Maeve said she was the only actress who read for the role of Vanessa, and it was more for Marland to see how she read the lines than an audition.

So much about Kyle's exit makes no sense.

After all his wailing over his son and how important it was to be a present father, he basically abandons him. They put the character in a coma to explain why he wasn't in SF questioning the paternity of Reva's baby (they had Sally take over that task). And how close he and Billy supposedly were...they could have handled it so much better. They should have just killed him off (which they did eventually off screen).

Good Lord---she couldn't have really submitted some part of the dramatization of Phillip's book, could she?

!!!! That whole thing was a total abomination. Maybe she wanted to showcase her singing? (But she's not being judge as a singer... I don't get it).

Interesting how she talked about the year being hard--probably a reference to the EP change/multiple writer changes. Couldn't have been easy for any of the cast and crew.

She said fans hated the human cloning storyline

Yes. We did.

Honestly, though, I personally hated the time travel story a lot more. Having Alan and Olivia turn up as Nazis in the past was so gross.

The big lesson she learned from that experience? "Trust your heart." 🤢

These storylines were just a way to have her suck up a lot air time.

Reva had to have been in San Cristobel before Goshen. But either she doesn't remember how she got to Goshen, or they never really explained it. I certainly don't know those particulars. Or if Reva was ever technically in Italy (Billy spotting her/or someone who resembled her in some travelogue footage from Italy was how they explained Josh leaving town in '91.)

Reva was Where Is Waldoing all over the place during her first absence. They couldn't just have her wash up on the Florida coast with amnesia. NO, she had to end up as the princess of a fictional kingdom and then go Amish!

(Not to be pedantic, but it was Reva's mom Sara who insisted she saw Reva in the Italian travelogue).

Ahh interesting - so then when Rauch came to GL in 96, I wonder how they got along after all those years later... assuming at least professional, but to be a fly on the wall.

They got SO far away from Beth in the latter part of BC's run. You can make the argument that Beth had gone through some serious trauma, which could have explained some of the things she did. It was just weird that Beth went from the ideal girl next door to an extremely neurotic woman with a very problematic love life.

Hmmm... this puts an interesting light on something else she mentioned in the Locher Room. She said Elvera Roussel came up to her and said, "Don't worry, this is the NICE soap opera set." (Something like that). I wonder if she meant that she didn't need to worry about that kind of thing at GL.
