Looking back at the RATSc archives, Jan. 18th, 2006, ...

fans were reacting to the special Wednesday shows. Came down on both sides of the coin, "unwatchable" or loved them! Someone hated Josh & Reva's. Someone else hated Harley's but liked Josh & Reva's. Yet one more person really liked Dinah's. Another fan is for them because of the concept. Personally, I remember liking them & thinking they were one of Wheeler's better ideas. One fan has dubbed Gina Tognoni his favorite Dinah of all!

I came to have that opinion of Tognoni, too.

One fan: best part was Dinah's voice-over that she's going to concentrate on her high powered career and they showed her spinning around in her office chair. Loved that!

But, another:  I've already set my DVR to skip next Wednesday.  WTH do I care about an hour

of Cassie and Jeffrey?  Ick.

Oh, yeah, I disliked Jeffrey O'Neill quite enough for that!

Isolate a single character & tell a story which sheds light on their journey, etc. That's why some of them were so successful & others were not. Plus, the actors loved them. The writers loved them.

What did you think of them? In general, I really enjoyed them. I would like to watch them again!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are stories from here to back again about people having problems getting along with their work colleagues. DOOL's Kristian Alfonso & Peter Reckell; DOOL's Crystall Chappell & Robert Kelker-Kelly; Y&R's Eric Braeden & Peter Bergman and so forth. One of the more egregious coming out of GL back in the day was Beth Raines, Krista Tesrau, Grant Aleksander and Mikey. As the story goes Beth grew up strictly West Coast, really with her family which was the circus. She worked as a clown from her youngest days. She found herself on the upper East Coast & it was cold & there was snow, which was her first experience with, and this new job to boot & she was terribly homesick & cried a lot, a while lot! Well, all that did was tune her up to be teased by the boys! They were unmerciful in how they went at her.

Then, there was a second phase to it: she was the total newcomer who won a Daytime Emmy when none of them had done so yet.

The actors loved them because they were basically full length Emmy reels. Some of them were decent but they wrecked absolute havoc on the show's pacing because they burned through so much story at once. Reva's cancer story suffered because all the good parts ended after a week.

Oh, yeah, true.

Personally, I have long thought that GL was operating at a fast pace during those years, anyway. Weekly, there was one Wednesday special epi. When they went out into the field to build houses, I loved that, but it chewed up time. Although those were webisodes weren't they? Otalia was racing along except for Jess's pregnancy leave. Jammy was racing along. Etc.

If you had to put person or persons on recurring at a certain point, who would you do?

  1. Frank DiCopoulous (Frank Cooper)
  2. Bradley Cole (Jeffrey O'Neill)
  3. David Andrew MacDonald (Edmund Winslow)
  4. Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper)

In order of preference, I would put Frank, Bradley and David on recurring.

If you had to do away with one element of story-telling at GL, would it be

  1. the Santos mob family
  2. San Cristobel Island & the royalty that went with it
  3. Roger's son, Sebastian

I would do away with all 3!

Oh, yeah, very good point.

Okay, I said up front one post was too long & had too much spoiler space in it, so you're right about that one. Other posts were short & just were talk about content. Just a minute ago I used a link & it will be hard to follow because the original convo had so much about story & HWs, etc. with spoiler space & arguments about whether rumors needed spoiler space. Thanks for your comments. I'm trying.

On Facebook, I blog soap operas. I have in excess of 235 topics on my blog index. Most of it comes from studying texts. Most of it does not come from copy/paste. More of it is short than is long. More of it is not word for word. My posting at Facebook is different than my posting here. The groups I post in on Facebook are my own Profile Page & Wall; "I Miss Another World; "Talking TV" and "Anne Heche".

    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.

    • Lol.  I love that this board still allows misinformation from a bad source.
    • Thanks @kalbir what a time to have enjoyed the peak of the primetime soaps. Haha you’re good. The only complaint I have with Lorraine’s death as I mentioned recently in the FC thread was it was overkill, and all we got Apollonia. If a pregnant woman had to be killed off, I would’ve chosen just killing off Robin instead in some freak accident or in the explosion at Richard’s to save us from us that disaster lol.    Did Hotel have a cliffhanger that year? I imagine if Hotel had been soapier we would’ve had cliffhangers like the hotel catching on fire or bombed by an ex-lover of Christine. Peter pisses everyone off and is shot in his office. Or a major Golden age star like a Olivia de Havilland shows and tells how she originally owned the Hotel and how Victoria Cabot & Laura Trent stole it from her but now she owns it etc.
    • The whole AMC 2.0 pulled it together in mere weeks to get a show up and running, with scripts and a cast.

Ginger Smith seemed really passionate about being in the executive producer position, and I think she really did a fantastic job in six weeks. It was just well done.
    • I totally didn’t pick up on that. Just perfect! I don’t get the Maurice Johnson hate around here at all. He didn’t take me out of the scenes at all. I understood everything he was portraying. It was great. I do wonder if there will be a personality shift with the new actor, whom I’m still not excited about. Exactly. Right? I’m in the exact same boat as you. Agree with most of this except I never found anything off with Ted, didn’t suspect a thing. I just watched yesterday’s episode and it was one of the best soap episodes I’ve seen in a very long time. I was enthralled the entire time. Just fantastic.
    • Yep! Very curious to see where this goes.
