TimWil,

Thank you for all of those GL tidbits. It's always disheartening to read more about how Don Stewart was at GL. But, his attitude also explains why Mike never had any long term relationship on GL after Leslie died. I've heard rumors that he and Beverlee McKinsey didn't get along too well, even though Pam Long was building up a Mike/Alexandra/Lillian triangle in 1984.

That was also interesting to read regarding Marsha Clark and John Wesley Shipp being Marland "spies"...

LOL..I always thought MH was hot in a difly kind of way (though back then they had no such term...) and yes this was his later years when he was "paunchy," which was funny as he looked like a normal guy...(and would never have been cast on a soap in the last 25 years.) Peter Simon, eh not so much there.

Hey, I myself have been attracted to "paunchy" guys! Is "bloated" a better term? Hulswit just looked unhealthy in those last few years on the show.

No way did I find Peter Simon attractive but I did find him appealing as Ed Bauer. Richard Van Vleet looked like a store mannequin.

I thought that the best of Dr. Ed Bauer (by far) was Robert Gentry.

I liked Mart Hulswit a lot, both on The Guiding Light and in his much shorter role as Ralph on All My Children.

I never cared for Richard van Vleet in his soap opera roles (All My Children, Guiding Light), but I don't have that dislike when I see him in primetime shows or movies. I guess that this is because he resumed the roles from other actors who I liked better.

I liked Peter Simon on other soap operas (The Edge of Night, Search for Tomorrow, As the World Turns), but I never saw him on Guiding Light.

I know that Larry Bryggman was hired to play one of the brothers in the early 1960s. I don't remember which one (Mike or Ed) that he was to play, but I am thinking that it was Ed. He opted to enter military service instead.

I must have seen Robert Gentry when he returned briefly to play Ed but I just can't remember it. I was very glad to hear from my friends in the business that Gentry got pulled back from the precipice by the AIDS cocktail. When I saw him on the street in NYC in the late 80s he looked really terrible. Good for him.

Uggh, I agree, Van Fleet was indeed a store mannequin. I hated him as Ed..you could see him reading the cue cards. Gentry's return as Ed was good...I liked him. He had more of a strength then Simon had (and no fish lips) but you could tell Ed still had his demons. I really wish they would have written for him at that time, especially with Carmen and gang coming soon. I also wish they kept him as paterfamilias with isssues (with Ross playing the solid Mike Bauer role) and not scenery chewing Justin Deas and the wretched Buzz Cooper.

I liked Hilliard as Hart. He wasn't the best actor but I enjoyed the rapport he had with Roger and with Dinah. I hated Grillo as Hart and being paired with Cassie and how Dinah went nuts over him. I know Grillo pretty much made Hart expendable but I never liked how they offed him.

    • no argument here! and as she was singing, i kept wondering how many verses ‘amazing grace’ had. looked it up: 13 — 13! — and i think she must have sung  every one.
    • Yasss, ANITA!!! GET HER!!!   Awww at Smitty calming Martin down.   'Oh, you're the one leaving.' That face like stone. Go 'head, Nicole.    Eva vs Kat...the gift that keeps giving.
    • I have to admit I still have a nagging complaint about timelines - Why aren't we allowed to know how long Ted and Nicole have been married or how old Kat and Eva are? Or for that matter, when Anita last released an album? BTG is a new show with no SORAS or timewarping. MVJ and Guza are working from a fresh bible. There is no need to be so coy about ages and anniversaries, especially when most of the storylines are driven by past events.
    • It was an extremely rare interview even then - I was shocked when I read it (as mentioned I'd forgotten just how far in she went). You could see how hurt and annoyed she was. I'm surprised he thought she came up with the baby story herself. She and Charles Keating did a good job with the material but it was absolute hokum. Even if they loved Carl and Rachel (and clearly they did), I don't see them coming up with stuff that, frankly, read like Geocities fan fic. Malone was clearly hobbled by NBC and P&G, but re-using so many of his old stories and his soap bible instead of actually coming up with material suited to the characters or show did not help.
    • Seeing this trash get good ratings says nothing good about daytime audiences. It's embarrassing.
    • Cat does feel committed to being a goofball (the other term has been reconsidered in recent years).  I wonder, given her brother Aaron, if Cat was less attractive prior to the surgery?  Remember the 1973 movie The Girl Most Likely to?  My fanfic for the moment is Cat commenting on how people treat her differently now that she is gorgeous.  One assumes that pre-surgery, Cat never had two men fighting over her for a date.  So, it might be fun to see that side of the story.
    • It's probably one of the only conflicts the story will have, aside from Dante being upset with Lulu when the truth comes out. They really needed someone else who actually knows Gio is Dante and Brook Lyn's son and kept quiet.
    • So Cat wasn't a creation of Ron C.. but something that the strike writers generated? Perhaps the new writers will give her some layers and purpose on the show that doesn't revolve around Chad since isn't he on his way out next year?
    • Another good show today, but -- Why is super agent Joss holding that thumb drive in plain sight instead of stashing it in her denim shorts? Make it make sense. -- Dante going after Gio (in the previews) for Rocco's alcohol poisoning is lame and cliche, just a contrived way to drive a wedge between father and son.
    • Didn't he get all angry because the strike writers set her up to be Abigail? And he just went with the first thing that came to mind in order to prevent that?
