The Soapgeist ( The Nelson Ratings ) 7/13/09

Nelson has a personality and a likability that if he would just do his job, he could be a wonderful gift to the world of soaps. But he tries to be too much of a fan boy and a comedian and a kiss ass that he can't even be taken seriously half the time.

YES!

I've never thought Nelson was "bad" at his job. His "whistleblowing" is sometimes fantastic and fun to read, even if it does destroy careers(i.e. Ed Scott/Josh Griffith). But he would be alot more fun if he were objective. Like, why hasn't he roasted Maria on his page about the kissing controversy, especially if he claimed it was the reason why Engen left?

I'm not sure, but I THINK he wants us to think that it's Jerry verDorn. I doubt it's him though - he's too much of a gentleman and even though he was screwed at GL, he's always been such a supporter of GL that I think he'd come back if his deal with ABC would allow it.

Not to mention that Jerry has already said publicly that he was looking into asking ABC if he could go to GL at least for the finale to see the show off.

It just goes to show that all the hoopla about killing what some call "LEGACY CHARACTERS" only matter when it is someone they like.

LOL. Just like everything else.

would suggest to me that they are some kind of Character, while Lily is not

She's a legacy character whether you like her or not.

Well the term Legacy Character would suggest to me that they are some kind of Character, while Lily is not. She's completely vacuous and a piss poor representation of the Winters/Barbers. Besides, Maria seems to listen to a lot of Bob Dylan because in her world we should remember that "Death is not the end" However, I don't think they want any representation, because if they did, they would be bringing on Big Nate and using Neil and Olivia as more than just sounding boards.

The last thing this damn "character" needs is MORE screen time, particularly screen time where we'll see her whine whine whine her way out of her damn cancer and back into her precious Cane's arms. My Lord, it's gonna be really tough to watch Y&R over the next few months with this damn s/l.

Can't it be horribly paced and last a couple months, please? Starting last month, of course.

And that should make her immune to being killed off?

Fish and Kyle are a couple? Since when? A college fling that we haven't heard anything about on screen yet does not a couple make, you dolt!

And Heather/Adam/Rafe ain't no triangle!

Nelson only pimps shows with new and exciting gay characters/storylines. He did it with NUKE, he did it with Bianca, he's doing it with Y&R because of a gay actor's return, a character's coming out, and a straight guy acting gay and sleeping with someone to keep them quiet.

The minute Maria and Hogan put Thom Bierdz on the backburner, he'll start talking smack.

Considering that her mother was "killed off" no one is immune. I was disagreeing with your spin on Lily not being a legacy character.

I personally have no problem with any character being killed off as long as the story is done right.

I just hate the term "Legacy character" is always thrown out there and the excuse is that they should never be killed off due to the story potential they have. My point was that the excuse is thrown out there all the time until it comes to someone that people don't like and then it is kill them off - who cares?

I would imagine that if someone different than CK were portraying Lily the story would be totally different with many. The term "legacy" would be thrown around again by many since she is Dru's daughter.

It's just like people throwing up so many being written out on the ABC shows and being killed off. I saw many Days fans doing this on many boards, and then some of those same fans who criticized ABC for killing off Asa or firing some of their vets were the same ones who had no problem with Days firing Drake & Dee or killing off Shawn Brady. They said it was what Days had to do.

So that was my point. It all comes down to who people like and the shows they like as to what is right in their minds. I just get tired of the excuses thrown around. That was my whole point.

There is a lot of things I don't like about Lily but to see her die right now would be totally unnecessary. Y&R has done so many deaths the last few years. I think they are trying to keep up with AMC on how many deaths they can do, how many baby stories they can do, and how many points of history they can rewrite. Come on hacks quit trying to keep up with another and write something totally new, innovative, and creative. You get paid enough to.

I agree with you SteveFrame. I don't think there is any reason to kill off Lily. She isn't working that well as a character, but neither is Billy, Mackenzie, Colleen, Sharon, Nick, Ashley...if we start killing when will we stop? Look at how much purpose Brad's death served. And as much as I wish CK were a better actress, and as annoying as it is that she is, like most of the other women on the show, only about men, I think she is probably a better realized character at the moment than a number of others.

The only time I can see a legacy character being killed off is if the show tried and tried and nothing ever worked out. For instance, if SFT had decided to kill off Jo's daughter Patti, I would have understood.

A friend and I are just wondering how long it will be before P3 on Y&R is killed.

Just about all the major rewrites in the last few years have resulted in death.

Erica Kane's abortion was undone. Josh Madden was born out of it. Erica's child lived. Met with controversy. Josh Madden dead.

Days redid the whole Tony/Andre story. Where are they at today? Tony was just recently murdered.

Jesse Hubbard has been reborn and no he wasn't killed off, but his creation cost the show another minority character as they just moved Jesse into the position that Derek filled. So Derek went and Jesse became the token black police chief. Jesse has a little more interaction but still basically serves the same purpose.

So far P3's undeath has met with mixed reviews. The Bierdz fans are overwhelmingly supporting it - at any cost. Other fans are totally mixed on it. But a huge majority are very upset. Will Y&R follow suit esp. if another writer comes along and wants to do exactly what MAB did and kiss the ass of the fans - he/she may kill off P3 just to win points with the fans who hated the story.

We'll see how much praise Maria, Sheffer, and Hamner get when the show gets a 3.0 household by the end of the year. At the rate it's going, Y&R is sure to go to record lows soon enough.

You obviously havne't read the latest ratings, we've gone up in total viewers 2 weeks in a row now, making up all that was lost the week of the digital conversion and then some. I TOLD YOU that the digital conversion was to blame for the low numbers that week. Nielsen actually predicted and expected the conversion to cause a ratings dip for most shows.

Not really, Y&R has been tying its record low ratings before the digital conversion and it continued a few weeks afterwards.

The ratings may be up this week and last week, but that's not stability and especially when the show was closer to hitting 4.0's earlier in the year and isn't any longer.
