Y&R: How would you improve it?

Which is why I don't understand how they can have Nikki and Paul together in a romance and waste all these flashbacks from their youth. Does EB have it in his contract that the only flashbacks of young Melody have to involve him? As a viewer why should I invest my time, when the writers won't invest theirs?

Personally, I think the show should just give a 20% pay cut to everyone across the board. And dump characters they have no use for. Singling out the women, while letting these over-hyped male stars keep their salaries, is insulting.

Good point! I have a favorite flashback too. It was over Christmas break. Nikki and Paul broke into a swimclub locker room, and they went skinny dipping. Except, then the men's swim team came in, and they had to hide. It was shot on location.

Another favorite is from the New World cult. I'd love to see the scenes when Nikki drew Paul in.

I'd also love to see one of those endless scenes where Paul tried to convince Nikki not to marry Greg.

All that would add texture to the current story.

You're right, of course. But it literally hurts to see it written out like that. MY GOD! A pair whose story started 30 years ago...finally coming together...it could have been like ATWT Kim-Bob in the 1980s...or even better.

Instead...this. Two dayplayers who have all their meetings at Crimson Lights.

I remember how I liked his support of her during Kay's death and David Chow's death.

What I don't like is that I feel this is less of a writing thing, and more of a "penny wise, pound foolish". Low guarantees for high-paid players.

EVERYONE they keep should have a high guarantee. And all others should be removed from the canvas (unless they're supporting, like Esther).

But this storyline was started long before the contract troubles, so it's not all about money at all. They just neglected Nikki and Paul, with half of the cast. As you've pointed out, MAB and company can only seem to write for a select group of limited characters, but not a broader canvas.

^LOL! Maria had some nice moments at the beginning of the year. However, most of her first year on this show was a boring and aimless disaster, and I do not like the current "shock" and "awe" with no substance storytelling that's been plaguing this show for the past few months. I'm sure MAB's heart is in the right place, but I do not perceive her to be a storyteller or one that is competent enough to handle the challenges or writing and guiding this show.

Of course it's different for everyone, but I think a lot of us are just fed up with the problems on this show that aren't adequately being addressed, which I think was CSF's purpose for creating this thread.

Exactly, that is my main goal for this thread. I want people to just give their comments and their feedback. Hopefully people at Y&R will see this and I'm not saying this is going to work, but it's a start. They can take the constructive criticism and look at what they are doing that's turing viewers off and try to fix that. Some may say they like the dark stories and some may not. There are ways Y&R can blend the two together.

    • In the 1987 episodes, Mary has wonderful conversations with MJ and Cheryl. This is a realistic family with believable dynamics. Mary's ambivalence towards Vince is played nicely. Denise Alexander is so good here. I don't know what happened that the writers or producers just decided to chuck it all away. I don't FF these scenes. The show had a strong family that could have had years of storyline and they did nothing with them. I really don't get it.
    • I can't speak for Sonni, but I thought Annie came off as neurotic from very early on. That's just how Cynthia Watros plays her parts, and the writing went along. I don't think Claire was mentally ill - they claimed she had a brain tumor, didn't they? I am never sure just why they made the effort given that she was leaving anyway.
    • @DeeVee Claire is a perfect example. So many women came to Springfield as competent, smart, and talented professionals. Then they’d attract a so-called “good guy,” get dumped, and spiral into complete chaos. What always strikes me is how clearly it plays like a male fantasy—yet it was written and sold to a female audience.  I'm not a content expert, but I don't think cis gendered women fantasize about losing control of their mental faculties in response to an orgasm. Similar to Holly's story, it seems repulsive, because I don't believe women fantasize about becoming more vulnerable and appealing to men after they've been assaulted.
    • I just watched some parts of an episode of GL where Roger has just been shot by Holly. Rita then admits to Hillary that Roger raped her. Kasdorf is such a fantastic actress. I wish there were more of her work available.
    • -- Alex Alegria has almost a full sleeve tattoo on one arm and a large tatt on one pec. I see no indication that the show is covering up his ink,
    • Didn't Carrie2 even seduce a minor? Ick. Oh, yeah, and she even tried to seduce Alan, but this was his post-prison era when he was trying to prove to everyone he had changed. It's funny that of all people he didn't go for it. Wait. Josh had an affair with Vanessa? Or she just thought he did? I know people always say "it's just a soap" but the way mental illness is portrayed on soaps (and that goes for pretty much all of them) has always been not great, especially PPD. They practically turned Claire into The Joker. She also was trying to seduce men. (I notice that now Mary Ryan Munisteri is listed as co HW with Ryder in the 1986 episodes, Claire has calmed down a lot. Never thought her GL career was very good but seems like she tried to course correct that a bit).
    • sss Ms. Tunie is a goddess. I feel all the anger, pride, sadness, arrogance, dignity, fear, love, and other emotions in everything she does as Anita.
    • You're right. People like me who stuck with her, did so because of her history. The show just skated her along with no story,  no goal, no aim. Right again! This is who I forgot before. When you describe her, it makes me appreciate her more. Thinking back I loved Mandy.
    • Maybe Guza is becoming Y&R Head writer and Jilly will be named EP! Remember CBS installed Latham as consultant and later Mal Young, both of whom took over the show. Of course, they each got credit during the consulting days.
