You want candles and rose petals. Really? Really?

You want guitar playing in the courtyard? Meet cute?

Not for me...not for adults on their second or third marriage...in their 30s and 40s.

I completly missed this beat even before MAB regressed the three of them. I never saw Nick become a man especially not in the Phick pairing. Nick doesn't even know himself without either woman. I actually think what's playing out on screen is Phyllis trying to make him into her ideal man and him showing resistance because she is being too controlling

I have never really cared for the institution known as Nick and Sharon so at least for me anyway, this has been a blessing. I think people love Phyllis and Nick together before and after the affair because they at least to me (can't speak for anyone else and don't care to either) reminds us that sometimes the person who you think isn't your type turns out be your type after all and there are no rules/guidelines for relationships. It is whatever works and make one happy - and yes that same happy can go unhappy too. I guess this is why we always have this neverending unnecessary comparison about Shick vs. Phick or both relationships vs. other relationships.

This has got to be the longest, short-term affair I have ever seen. ;) I doubt very much that Nick and Phyllis are over - it appears the writers have taken the time to figure out how to take them to that next level. They have already started laying the other groundwork. But both Nick, Phyllis and the pairing have got to go through some hard growing pains and what I affectionately like to call "TURBULENCE". And I love TURBULENCE, so MAB better not disappoint me!! I agree too with whoever said now we are getting to see Joshua & Michelle more engaged in the material...that's possibly because a "WRITER who can write for COUPLES/ACTORS who don't want "pies and white picket fences" is writing!!

Personally, I've seen nothing of this "type" thing. The only connection they share is sex, nothing emotional or of substance, to me. It hasn't ever been reflected in the writing, or the horrific acting Morrow and Stafford produce together.

I'm not a big Nick and Sharon fan, but their early realtionship and even their relationship now is much more clearly defined than whatever Nick and Phyllis have.

Not to mentioned, Stafford should be paired with someone that doesn't make her look so damn old. Television is a visual medium after all...

I like that phrasing. Many in the audience don't want pies and white picket fences.

One of my all-time favorite couples was Lionel and August Lockridge on Santa Barbara. Sexual, incendiary. When the writing on that show was good, that couple was unbeatable.

Nick and Phyllis are less dysfunctional, but together they seem like a couple that is PAST all the "soulmate" bullsh!t. They enjoy each other. That's truly enough.

I agree the couple could be strengthened if they talked more and problem solved together more.

Now, what about Phyllis' reaction to the affair. I agree it has weakened her. But even she sees that...hence "I hate you" in the mirror.

I LOVED her reaction after the first sex. "No, you will NOT leave. No, you will work on this!" How adult. How accurate...like Elizabeth Edwards, there is a FAMILY to consider.

After the second sex, you will recall that she did respond with anger and kick him out. But again, there is more at stake than Phyllis, and she gets that. There is the marriage and the family. I love the Phyllis is being strong, and reminding Nick of that. Nick is realizing that he is being weak in the relationship, and Phyllis is being the strong tether that is helping him find his way home.

I think those two could now get back on solid footing...maybe even emerge stronger due to all this. EXCEPT THAT DAMN EMBRYO SHARON HATCHED WHILE DRUNK AS A SKUNK is now gonna throw a monkey wrench.

My goodness. My mouth is agape.

I disagree on the "emotional substance". In the most useless scenes, we just have to look in Stafford's eyes, and there is a world of substance there. Honestly, that is enough. The writers are trusting the actress to sell it...they don't need to lay it out in clunky word after word.

Stafford does NOT look old. She is a totally totally banging babe. Pure sex. One need only take one glance at her, and one can instantly understand why Nick is in her sexual thrall. She is amazing.

Indeed, until you wrote this, seriously, I totally forgot there might be an age difference.

I really really love your post!! B) I really do!! B) Different strokes for different folks in what we view!!! I agree, Phyllis's reaction to the affair has weakened her, no doubt about that. But we know why, it's because for Phyllis the writers have given her the dialogue, Nick is the love of her life so I understand the loss of strength when it comes to that. And yeah, Phyllis is being the strong tether that is helping him find his way home.

I don't mind that embryo Sharon throwing a monkey wrench into this. I welcome it!! This is the strongest test that Nick and Phyllis's have ever faced in their relationship and I can't wait to see how the writers write this storyline. Hopefully Nick and Sharon can finish their unfinished business for a spell and we can get the show on the road again.

Phyllis needs a more dynamic love interest, not the eternal frat boy, and preferably one whose acting will raise the bar of Stafford's acting. Morrow doesn't challenge Stafford the way Bergman did, thus it is one of the many reasons Nick and Phyllis are dull and lack nuance.

Even if I agreed with your assessment of Morrow (I don't...all you have to do is watch when he woke up during his "Nick Van Winkle" story), let's stipulate agreement.

That still doesn't mean the couple has to be broken up. They can do their thing as "Phick", and Stafford can get her "complex scene partners" in business stories, and other sotries that don't involve her romance with Nick. For example, I love Phyllis and Lauren together. I buy that relationship. So, Stafford can be in a story with Lauren...and come home to her guy.

We won't convince each other :). I think this lack of consensus about the couple is very good for the show...it means they have a permanently viable triangle that will always keep the audience engaged and different aspects of fandom happy or miserable.

....No, I meant strictly in the romantic sense.

And you're right, we're almost total opposites when it comes to this show. I also find myself agreeing with Sylph that you retionalize every bad thing about this show, but don't allow the same leeway to other shows, but I guess that's the "fanboi" in you. ;)

    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
