My GOD I hated that kid!

At least he's animated and engaged in the scene. The actresses that have played Summer, on the other hand... :|

Well, I know I'm in the minority, but I don't see what is so great about this.

Phillip IV (or whichever number that is) will be an isolated character on an over-crowded cast. He is not needed. Nor is Nina. And again: what's the point of making Nina, one of the most open-minded GC residents, the mother of a gay young man? She'll be so nonchalant about it. Instead, I'd rather see Victor, or Nick, or Jack filling those shoes.

Let's face it: this show cannot contain all the characters that it has had over the years. Writing in more pregnancies, and SORASing certainly won't help that.

I do see what you're saying. I think a lot depends on the pacing and the character development.

Even if Nina may be open-minded, I wouldn't be surprised if Jill is there to be disapproving, or some homophobic barbs from Billy. Or the conflict may be about his military service and his own issues about the legacy his sexuality won't let him have, moreso than other characters struggling with his being gay.

If the story was about one of Victor's kids, then it would probably be all about how weak he is compared to Victor, and how this shames Victor, who still nobly tries to accept his damaged son. Jack doesn't even remember his kids; for all we know, Keemo is married to Jerome and they have two little girls named Keema and Geraldine. Nick would probably have to be told what the word gay means, and then just be grateful he has less competition.

When it comes to SID, I take not a grain of salt, but the whole damn shaker.

I just got the issue of SID and it says that Phillip is a potential love interest for Rafe. I wonder why they would say that if there were no plans at all. These two must be crossing paths at least.

Agnes Nixon once said when it came to a gay storyline that you want to win over the homophobes. You develop the character and you make the audience fall in love with that character and then once they've grown to care for that character, that's when you make them come out. You then have trapped the homophobes in a sense where they see that there is more to this character than their sexuality. They too began to accept not only the changes in society, but also people for who they really are, regardless of sexual orientation.

If what SID is reporting is indeed true, I think it was a good choice to make Phillip IV gay. He is a legacy character and the son of a very liberal, open minded woman, Nina Webster. Viewers of Y&R know Nina for who she is and what she believes in. Phillip grew up on Y&R up until 2001. Having him return to Genoa City from Iraq is a smart way to reintroduce him. He could be fighting for our country because of what he believes in. His mother on the other hand may not have been a supporter of the war, but supports her son who she loves. What we may see through this storyline is the way people accept other's, they accept the one's they love first, then they start to accept everyone else. Nina would love her son regardless of whether he is gay or straight. But what the writer's will probably explore will be more than his relationship with his mother. I think this storyline has potential to not only entertain, but to educate it's viewers on the whole DADT issue and a whole other variety of things. Nina's very open minded, Jill could be accusing her of "making her grandson gay" (which I doubt Jill would do, I think she'd be more accepting), however, we know people aren't "turned" gay, but many would argue otherwise.

I'm eagerly anticipating to see what happens with this storyline. If Phillip IV is gay, this could be great for Y&R and the medium as a whole. If not, I will be disappointed if he is just mixed in with Colleen and Lilly and a bunch on nonsense.

It's a shame that Bryton refuses to do a gay s/l. I heard he griped to the producers to give him a girlfriend just so people wouldn't think he was gay.

A very nice post. I hope the story does occur. We will have to just wait and see.

I would like to believe Jill wouldn't go on about who made her grandson gay, but for a long time now I don't think Jill is a character as much as she is someone who acts aggressively to push the plot forward. I guess her reaction depends on how big of a role Nina will play. If they don't want to make this into Jill against Nina, then Jill may have only a small part in the story, and will accept Phillip.

It would be interesting to see Y&R try to tackle this type of story, because the show right now is very dark and full of dysfunctional characters, which would be a very murky area for a show to introduce a gay storyline. They also struggle with actually telling a story, with clear purpose, and understandable characters and motivations, from start to finish, instead of treading water with shock value to help keep viewers interested (someone stabbing themselves in the eye, Sharon WTD with three men, squirrel hallucinations). I think this type of story would be a big test for them.
