Is there anything Nick Hudson did that Cory could not have done? With Blaine as Maggie's stepmother and Larry as Cory's stepfather they were not real cousins. I hardly remember Nick interacting with Michael and Donna very much but maybe that's more about the casting than what actually happened in the storyline. I remember thinking that Justin Chambers was very good and then *poof* he was gone.

Nick did have some interaction with Michael, but not enough to warrant making him Michael's son. The most interesting element was after Michael died and Donna began to turn to Nick. The show never would have gone there but I was kind of hoping they'd sleep together.

I agree. I appreciate your response. Very insightful. Thank you! I secretly enjoyed it myself. I thought it was a fun way to celebrate V-Day.  I found the episodes to be relatable.

I would have liked it if Clarice had shown up for the anniversary episodes because I had heard so much about Clarice but I've seen so little of her. By the time I started AW, Larry was on his way out and he just disappeared with no fanfare. Was there a writer or producer on AW at the time of the anniversary episodes that knew the history of these characters that people in this thread have offered as possible candidates for inclusion?

I can't answer your question directly.  But they did not include Clarice and Larry in the 25th anniversary episodes.  Although Clarice and Larry both returned a few months later for Mac Cory's funeral.

Apparently Nick did have to donate bone marrow to Michael, but based on the dates it sounds like that must have happened quite early after he arrived. Really it sounds like a justification for the character to be around at all which would not have been necessary for Cory. They could have manufactured a reason for Cory to interact with Michael just as easily.

Also, the show tried to get Maeve Kinkaid to return as Angie.. which I think had she agreed to come back.. it would have given Gwen something else to do other then her out of character hatred for Rachel and the Cory's.

Also, Angie had been a neighbor of Ada's... and her mother Rose and Ada were friends so she would have also interacted with Rachel/Ada.. and she also had ties to the Matthews as well.

It is interesting (and probably meaningful) to note that, with the exception of one -- all the characters invited to return for AW's 25th anniversary episodes had either been active characters during Lemay's first era of head-writing, OR created by Lemay during the same period.  The only exception was Sandy Cory (Christopher Rich) who was invited to return for the 25th but declined. (Sandy first appeared on AW in late-1980 or 81.)

So, let that sink in.

What does that say about the permanent influence of Harding Lemay on AW's long-term legacy?  And what does it say about earlier and especially later head-writers?? The entire merry-go-round of head-writers between 1979 and 1989, and the dozens and dozens of new characters who came and went during that decade were almost completely ignored when the 25th anniversary episodes were pulled together.

I do certainly realize that nearly the entire 1989 "current" cast had been introduced by later writers (all post-1983, I believe).  But the focus of my point is on characters and actors invited to return for the 25th. Except for Sandy, Lemay had written for or created all of them.

We can discuss specifics, if anyone wants to.  But I believe the list of invited returnees is fairly well known among long-term AW fans.

I do wish we'd seen more of the guests, but given that it was her show and she was helping AW with publicity I can't blame her. Knowing how much she loved her husband and her mother it warmed my heart a little seeing them.

Thanks @watson71 . I'd never seen any of the party, never saw that clip either.

Thanks! Susan Sullivan mentions how much she enjoyed doing a scene where she got to destroy a set -- does anyone remember that scene and what it was about?

I know what you mean. Lemay created Mac Cory and in 1989 even though the cast had been completely reset two or three times since Lemay had left, Mac and Rachel represented a core of stability -- which is why it made sense to build the anniversary and the return of so many characters around the retconned idea that Cory Publishing was 25 years old.

I can imagine an alternate universe where they had decided instead to make the show's 25th anniversary party the 25th birthday of Marley and Victoria -- but that would not have had ties to older cast members before 1983.

She was likely talking about the scenes just before Walter Curtain's deadly car accident. Lenore and Walter had a huge fight at their house, and Lenore became so angry she was throwing things and knocking over small furniture.

    • I have long given up on logic and Mayor Laura Collins! It makes about as much sense as Luke being elected mayor over Lee Baldwin in the 80’s, maybe even less sense. She committed manslaughter as a teenager, was involved with a mobster (I guess credit for them taking Smith down), had a shoot out in her home and killed another mobster in self defense, thought she bludgeoned her stepfather to death, then was catatonic for years. Her current husband had a twin that was a serial killer, had his own breakdown that threatened lives, and most recently hid his brother for treatment and that allowed Ryan to escape and kill again. And had hook killer Esme as a houseguest and is raising her child. I don’t care for Sonny anymore but their relationship is just another thing that involves suspension of belief to watch the show. I wish someone on this show would remind these adults that they used to pull way worse stuff than this! I would love a scene where Laura is sitting with Lulu and tells her while she is not happy this is nothing compared to what she got up to when she was young, and maybe even some understanding that she would also do stupid stuff if she believed in the cause. Olivia reminding Dante that he was wild as a teen and this isn’t that. Felicia reminding Anna that they were being shot at when pretty close to Emma’s age. These characterizations are just so basic. Have some fun with the actual history of the show. That kind of wink would mean more to me than just name dropping some random fact.
    • There are no dumb questions here, we've all known each other long enough to fill in information without shaming each other.  We want you to be happy @carolineg.  Your POV as one of the few women here is vital. So, please, I hope you never feel as if any question, idea, or opinion is ever silly or stupid.  Your daily reminders about the realities of manicure and menstrual management has become a part of the personality of this thread. As for Hank, while I'm confident there's a plan in place.  It is frustrating that they announce these casting so far in advance that it is tough as an audience and wait it out until the thing happens.  I'm happy they didn't blow it the second Mike was in town, a week after meeting Liam. So, it is a slow burn.
    • I think his full name is Chadwick.  I remember, back when the previous actor was playing him, someone called him Chadwick a couple of times.  It may have been Stefano.
    • I didn't like those two sleeping together, but I suuure liked seeing BF in them. Wiggle and all. Just sad about the waxing of the chest.   Same.
    • It’s strange. I wonder if the writers at that time had worked with him somewhere else and had a relationship? That time is murky AF to find info on. Rachel Ames in effect left the show at one point in the early 80’s and she is credited like she was there until JFP. Tristan Rogers also took various contract breaks that were not short, and websites also credit him one long stint from 1981-1992. So many people come and go in short succession in 1982-part of 1983. I know they lost a lot of viewers when Genie left, but the show somehow survived yearly at number one through like sheer force of will.
    • In that way, at least we were fortunate.  The Daniel Pilon/Ron Raines decisions...not so much.
    • Letting Brennan put it in yet again while smirking over his shoulder... any day now! She's got him just where she wants him! I do think ol' Jack will be dead by February at the absolute latest. They have set him up as a counter-heavy to Sidwell, forcing poor Joss to work his next scheme or threatening to have her sent down for treason. Once he croaks I still deeply fear we will be subject to Valentin and Carly, partners in crime to lovers, possibly out to find out 'who killed Jack'. Anna was at her best keeping Sonny at arm's length and often somewhat cold, which she only really did (for better or worse) off and on during Carlivati's tenure. But Finola gradually got too emotional over Sonny, Jason, etc. and was allowed to do that onscreen too much long ago. Mulcahey brought some of that steel back, though Finola still managed to choke or quietly sob through some of that material as Anna found her way there lol. She's a brilliant actress and she did a good job with that stuff in '24, but now we're back to the same old and it humiliates the character whether she knows it or not.
    • Listen, I am all for Laura Wright wearing silly wigs and glasses if there was a point.  So far she's just been nice to Brennan and made out with him.  How evil lol!!  Even though I have been told Brennan loves her the writing was never there.  It's so low stakes.  Carly should maybe talk to her daughter and have an adult conversation instead. Laura and Anna look foolish.  I really don't have an issue with either being friendly or at least having some affection for Sonny.  I don't get both of them wanting to have a parade to announce how much they love him and how valuable the friendship is.  C'mon, Laura basically tolerated Sonny because of Luke until Lulu/Dante got together.  Anna likes Sonny because Robin did?  There really isn't much more of a reason for Anna to give him the time of day besides that.  They aren't lifelong buddies.
