Anthony was a very special talent. He was perfect for Giles. He played everything right. I don't think the show ever fully appreciated his talents and their phasing him out was a symbol of their decline. Yet they did give me many moments I still treasure. I remember that "lie to me" scene with Buffy and Giles like it was yesterday. I wish the spinoff Whedon had planned for Giles had gone forward.
Anything else I saw him in I appreciated - Merlin, Doctor Who (he was quite a baddie), Ted Lasso, Bridgerton.
He even managed to win the American public over, as an unknown, being saddled with a fake American accent, selling Taster's Choice coffee.
Very saddened, and surprised.
