Ah, I don't care. I enjoy reading what you write, regardless...because it is written with such...style. "spread your MacBook for trash" is an amazing line.

Yes, it blurred some lines...there is no denying it. But while some of the bloggers gushed more (Roger Newcomb, Patrick Erwin), others worked harder to maintain objectivity (Bibel, Fairman). And Bibel and Fairman are not really bloggers in the classic sense. Fairman is trying to build an independent "soaps news/interviews" outlet. A former employee of Soapcity, he's tried to parlay his connections into a satellite radio show and regular columns for an Australian TV mag and occasional pieces for The Advocate. So, he's really in the "soap journalism" world... For Bibel, it's more complicated. She's an editorialist, but she is paid for her work by Fancast. She's doing lots of reviews of primetime serials and reality shows, plus her regular soap opinion column.

Does every blogger have to be the Drudge Report? And is Drudge not himself bought off?

I honestly honestly do not understand where these "standards" and "rules" and "shoulds" come from.

A very nice entry. But I have to disagree with her on one point: Zach was a Grade A dick long before Kendall's coma.

All of journalism is in a state of flux. The old world is dying and the new one hasn't been born yet so at the moment we're in purgatory. The standards and rules will be made up as people try things and fail. Did Bibel's trip to Peapack ruin her credibility? That's up to each reader to decide. Should GL not have issued the invitations? I wouldn't say that. After all they were fighting for their life. We certainly know plenty of "old style" soap journalists who sell their consideration like Thai whores. *coughBrancoHinseycough* We'll see that in the blogosphere too.

Long story. The Germans are remarkable in their insistence that academics be well read, and be able to bring a well-supported line of argumentation to any discussion. It is also encouraged to have a perspective (even if one doesn't actually espouse it) in discussion, because it is in debate that truth emerges. To that end, in America, the "question period" after a talk is often a quiet one...audiences have little to say or ask. In Germany, question periods often went much longer than the presentation...because each member of the audience wanted to show what they were capable of...how clever their thoughts were.

Academic discussion, in my genman experience, was a competitive team sport.

I do see that in all your threads and posts, and it is part of what I enjoy.

What I didn't enjoy about academia in Germany, though, was the "no bullsh!t" approach. If you were on the receiving end of negative review...it was withering. There was little respect for the well being of the recipient of criticism...only the logical argument.

While I have tried to retain that respect for the line of argumentation in my work, I definitely have embraced the North American art of criticism, which is to balance the negatives with the positives. I have been told, in my professional life, that when I deliver the equivalent of withering criticism, folks don't really notice, because it is wrapped in a cotton ball of love and respect. And that is sincere. I can usually find things to admire and respect, and I want to make sure that the recipient knows that, too.

You'll see that approach in my view on soaps.

Or at the Starbucks Coffee counter at Kroger.

(beat)

Not that I would know anything about that.

(beat)

Well, I had to pay for my groceries, didn't I? Who are you all to judge, anyway?!

EXACTLY! I think anybody who's worked a service job: retail, restaurant, desk clerk knows what it's like to feel that special kind of dirty at the end of the day.

But getting back to Bibel, if she was upfront about how she got backstage at GL, doesn't that show more integrity than say...the columnist who goes from hating something to raving about it with no apparent motivation?

Well, I did for two years up until 8 weeks ago... because I wouldn't whore myself. I hate that company and everything about it!

Child, please. Don't get me started.... but since you have, IT'S A CULT!! I SWEAR! IT'S A CULT!!!

Oh... I might as well address the topic:

Thank you, Bibel... for stating the obvious. With a fresh new perspective and fabulous insight like that, you and Tom Casiello could save the entire genre in one keystroke!

Okay, I'm done being downright catty.

    • A little too much focus on Chad and Cat today but I enjoyed the episode. I have a feeling that Jennifer’s gonna get dumped on though, even though I think that her anger is completely understandable and justified. And honestly, Ron is finally gone; Abigail can come back now.  But, welcome back, Anna! It was nice seeing Carrie have scenes with her mother. Christie Clark and Leann Hunley have never really had that many scenes together and to see them have them now is really nice. I’m glad that both of them were there to comfort Marlena too. Their words were definitely the thing that Marlena needed to hear. Btw, with all this talk of Noah, does it mean that he’s gonna be introduced soon? Amy, revealing that John changed her flat tire many years ago seemed a little random though. I would rather she have said something about how everybody in Salem knows of John Black because of how he was always such a hero. But at the same time, her story also showed what a great guy John was.  I liked Kate’s scenes with Philip too, and her promise to get back at Xander for what he did. And since we didn’t see JPL in the bed, did he need some time off or something? And yeah, everything involving ‘One Stormy Night’ still seems very Ron-like to me.
    • The second photo featuring the late John Spencer is from the Law & Order episode, "Prescription For Death", which was the (second) pilot/first episode all the way back in 1990! He played the father of a daughter that had gone to the ER for a mere sore throat but ended up dead because the doctor on call was drunk and had given her medication that she had an adverse reaction to, after receiving some other medication. So, he will always have that great distinction in addition to The West Wing. (The first pilot, "Everybody's Favorite Bagman", was filmed in 1988! The show was offered to CBS, but they passed. In syndication, it is oddly placed as the sixth episode of Season 1. And Roy Thinnes played DA Alfred Wentworth there. When NBC picked up the show two years later, Thinnes declined to return, and that's how we got Steven Hill's DA Adam Schiff.)
    • exactly. I can understand schadenfreude if it were real, but a lot of this is just an engineered distraction.
    • Days of our Lives S60E204 – Thursday, June 5, 2025 Okay, today’s episode was kind of boring. It was nice seeing Jack and Jen back, but they wasted an entire episode on Jen chatting with Julie - one scene would’ve been enough. Also, why didn’t Jack and Jen go comfort Marlena? And wouldn’t a flashback with Jack, Jen, and John have been great? Maybe something from the Cruise of Deception era? Bottom line - it feels like once John’s memorial is over and the returning fan favorites leave Salem… the show’s going to be dull again.
    • Everything with Elon and Trump is a stunt. If people, and the sycophantic press, are talking about their "feud," they are not talking about Republican plans to gut Medicare, Medicaid, and the ACA.
    • I can't fully remember, but I don't think they tried to get Beth Chamberlin back. I think Laibson/McTavish likely saw Beth as old news and wanted to move Philip on; either that or have her return only when Philip was closely tied to a new woman. Thanks as always for these recaps. I think I had stopped watching around this time and mostly kept up by reading in the soap magazines. Bridget's degradation was horrible to watch, as the character had grown so much over the years and was clearly regressed just to be a foil for a "hot" couple viewers had zero investment in.
    • Having the majority of the cast on those low numbers is no way to tell story. And just 2 dayplayers for the month. So sad for the #1 soap.
    • I believe it was. And this is actually one of the cases where I wouldn’t mind some dumb soap opera bringing back from the dead. They gave Mishael, Amanda, with all of Hilary’s connections but none of the personality except for fleeting moments. Hilary absolutely should’ve just left town. They decided to kill her and the baby. Just baffling,
    • That was Mal Young right? He thought a tragic death was a better option than crafting a story where Hilary leaves town. Was it a case of punishing someone who wants to leave? And then they have to jump through hoops to bring the actress back.
    • Ooo @TaoboiI will say I just watched Amanda give it to Abby and I loved it. Honestly just made me miss Hilary more. I will never understand or get over that decision to kill her off. Also call me crazy but I could definitely see the Damian actor playing NuTed on BTG. Very much still enjoying the Lily attraction.
