GL: April Discussion

15 minutes into today's episode now ("banana pancakes" -- love the funny awkward scene!).

Some other things I forgot to say about yesterday:

It was shocking how far Marina went to keep Henry, planting drugs on the social worker. I have really lost respect for Marina. She had a point about how Henry was in a loving home, and that's all she should have done.

However, in an emotional soapy sense, it is good to have Marina and Mallet reach a new height of happiness, seemingly secure in their future with Henry, just before the bombshell of the baby's real parentage.

I am not sure, by the way, if Shayne will want custody. What are people's predictions? I think if Marina and Mallet end up losing Henry, it will be their tearful and painful choice, not Shayne's doing. It is also possible Marina and Mallet will just end up raising Henry after a couple months of everyone not being sure what to do. I don't see Shayne really pursuing a custody battle against Marina to the end, or Dinah against Mallet, although they may start one.

I wonder how long Dinah will keep the secret from Shayne. That's another thing that's not predictable. If GL were not ending on CBS soon, this could have had the potential to be kept secret for a year or more. It would have been a soap cliche, but the fallout could still have been gripping.

Today's episode was another solid one, although I don't have much to comment on.

Frank's delusion to Buzz about how he could tell Natalia was still in love with him showed some depth to the character. Alan's conversation with Otalia and Natalia started off as the same old one, but changed into something else. I liked the weirdness of it. I also liked Alan mentioning Rafe for the first time in three or four months -- yes, they remember Rafe is a Spaulding! I liked Olivia asking Natalia if she wanted to come in to the room. I'm so glad they aren't going to have Olivia pushing Natalia away for weeks and weeks.

Bill and Lizzie were fun today -- I loved Lizzie's mock jealousy about the masseuse and the cliched but always fun pushing Bill into the water -- but bring on the rest of the Spauldings for some conflict.

Part of me wishes Clarice had testified about Marina planting the drugs. That might have led to some interesting conflict between Mallet and Marina, and between Marina and her dad (who might have to arrest her?), although it would have messed with the bombshell Shayne reveal.

If GL weren't rounding the clubhouse turn, if you will, this would be a perfect time to take Frank in a new, darker direction. Send him away for a bit with hurt feelings; recast if you have to (frankly, I doubt FD could play brooding); then bring him back, resolving never to be so trusting and naieve with anyone again.

Well if you want to know,

It's unfortunate the show is going to end before they have the time to really play out this story, it has potential to be fairly interesting, mostly with Dinah's conflict over thinking Shayne deserves to raise his child, but Mallet and Marina are good parents to Henry. What would be even more interesting is if it became a Cooper vs. Lewis thing and gave us a break from the dumb and overdone Spaulding vs. Cooper saga.

I think I'm the only person who just finds Lizzie and Bill dull these days - probably because I'm rather sick of the story always being them against the evil Spauldings who are trying to ruin their happiness.

Happy that Bosnia stuff is over, still don't understand why Edmund followed them. Hopefully that means that is the last time we'll hear the name Lara, but I doubt it.

The location shoot looks interesting, we shall see though.

Also, if rumors are true and Gina, Jeff, Marcy, and Daniel have already made it known they don't plan on continuing with GL if the show continues <_< I'm not sure what the show is going to focus on then, because Robert and Kim aren't going either. As great as Otalia is, I don't know if they could do it on their own, and Daisy, Ashlee, James, Remy, Christina and Marina being the other main characters, uh uh

Oh no about these rumors, I didn't know about them, but Phillip, Alan, Rafe, Billy, Beth, Buzz, Blake, and Lillian too could be main characters, and they can always recast and bring back some old faves, as well as create new characters with ties to the current ones. If the show became weekly or half an hour as I think it might, it would need a smaller cast anyway.

The discussions are for the show to focus on the Spauldings and the Bauers....the Coopers werent mentioned but I cant see Ellie giving up on that goofy family so soon after moving heaven and earth to make this Guiding Coopers. I think they definatley will focus on the cheaper, currently recurring core characters and recast some old ones with cheaper actors (i.e. Ed maybe???) That is why I dont see them getting rid of Dicipolous, at this point in time he has to be paying THEM to be on the show. I would think that GA would be the lead and most expensive actor...Zimmer and Newman wont be a part of it (which can only mean no Brad Cole!!!)

Does anyone know anything about the official Telenext Board? I havent been able to get in for three days. Did they cancel that too?

Agreed, you dont have a dime to spend, so why bring on this nobody...spend it on Alex, Blake, (hey she was a private eye before, I could see her pulling out her old Blake moves to seduce Eddie into her sack for a while, then handcuff him to the bed, which would be more fun then seeing this dork run around town) and Vanessa.

I dont understand why they insist on the realness of this production model, but they insist on having secret agents, assassins, kidnappings, and people named "Roc Hoover," which shows that someone on GL has a sense of humor or that they are dumb as a box of eh, rocks, as it makes it sound like a gay porn star moved to Springfield.

Have a feeling if it wasn't for Edmund - RN [josh] wouldn't have anything to do on GL now - still would like to see Eddie/josh with their grandson - still think they can explain Eddie bad stuff with head injuries like they excuse other characters crime or just treat them like they never happen anyway DAM is too good to lose as Eddie or someone should pick up DAM fast if GL really does go off for good - however I want GL and Eddie to shine on. I would like to see Eddie/Liv/Nat to party together.

    • Maybe Guza is becoming Y&R Head writer and Jilly will be named EP! Remember CBS installed Latham as consultant and later Mal Young, both of whom took over the show. Of course, they each got credit during the consulting days.
    • Don't forget Carrie, who as Carrie2 was screwing everything in pants, and PPD Reva, who to either get back at Josh for his supposed affair with Vanessa (or just to prove she's more desirable than Van) tries to screw half the male population.
    • Post-production isn't exactly akin to sweeping the floors, but it makes more sense given her CV.  And, it would invalidate any concerns that she has an undo influence on the creative process, as opposed to visual and sound design of the show.  In fact, given her interests, it makes sense that she would want to consult and see the impact of newer technology in a post-production facility.  I could only imagine how much has changed in sound technology since she worked on SB, and that might be intriguing to utilize. As well as their impending move (not as soon as B&B, but we all know it will happen) and helping set up post-production at the new facility.
    • The last five or so episodes of season 8 after the Jean Hackney story ended were pretty strong with the Laura/Val friendship breakdown, Ben's PTSD with Val trying to help him, and the start of Jill realizing that Val was as much of a threat to her happiness with Gary as Abby was. I always thought that the Jean Hackney story should have ended at mid season at the latest... and then deal with the fall-out because seeing Ben/Val switch roles with Ben in mental decline instead of Val would have been interesting to explore.  And seeing Val and Laura's friendship suffer also was interesting and should have been explored especially with Karen caught in the middle and Abby both intrigued and amused at the conflict that she didn't cause. However, season 8 was the only Latham run season where Val was well written.
    • Well, she's not in there sweeping the floors at the end of the night, and you don't bring in an award-winning producer to just sit on their backsides (or hey, maybe you do!). Again, without knowing the specific capacity she's in there working as⏤and it seems as if we are not going to at the present time⏤it's hard to speculate/discuss. I would interpret she's in a role that either would not require being credited, or she's, as others have speculated, is back and not receiving credit for the work she's done. That'd be like saying, per the WGA, all writers must be credited, but as we've seen by those who've worked as fi-core, they don't always receive credit.

And, if my research is correct, per the DGA, you can request not to be credited for work you do. I could only assume the same would be for the PGA, as well.
    • When Anita read Barbara's letter, it started out with the viewers hearing it in Barbara's voice as Anita read silently. And then Anita saying the next portion aloud while Barbara's voice continued simultaneously. And then ending with Anita alone saying the last part aloud. Excerpt from interview  (link to full interview) The rest may be spoilerish -- Only the nonspoiler part here: I love the idea of reading that letter,” shares Tunie. “And at one point in the script, I think it said that my voice joined her, and [Anita] started reciting the letter from memory because [she] memorized this letter. I suggested to Steve Williford, our director, ‘What if it’s like that moment in Hamilton when Hamilton is writing the resignation letter to George Washington, and then he starts saying it too, and then Hamilton’s voice fades away, and then it’s all George. What if we do something like that?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, my God! I just got chills. Let’s do it!’ So, we did it.” I understood that it worked really well, so I’m really happy about that.”
    • I think MVJ and Guza made a good team in the launching of the soap, and I'm hoping that the rotation of all stories and characters is maintained once he officially departs from the credits. And so far, Ron C's breakdowns have been decent... but they pop only when he's paired with a good script writer like Jazmin.   I hope once Guza leaves officially... that MVJ is able to reign in Ron C and the dread Jamey G.
    • I read that, but my interpretation was that she is uncredited because it is in a non-production capacity.  In others words, she's not secretly producing, or writing, as some had speculated prior to the confirmation. Her likeliest position would be in a post-production consultant capacity. I assume we agree on this?
    • Errol already confirmed she is back at Y&R and in a non-producing role; this alludes to she is not credited for the role she has.
    • I don't think Lisa served a purpose after the serial killer storyline. The writers never gave her anything to do but be Vicky's nemesis. Joanna Going deserved better. Another example of a character taking over the show and then the writers not having a longterm plan for the character.  Exhibit B: Sally Spencer. Such a missed opportunity. It really angers me how they misused her. She could sing and act and they just threw her away in that sexist nonsense storyline. Once the story was over, they wrote her off. The McKinnons should have lasted for years. I will give the show credit for how they introduced Sandra Ferguson as Amanda. I thought it was expertly done. She comes in and she immediately connected to RKK's Sam. She has chemistry with Matthew and she has realistic conversations with MAc and Rachel. That's how it is done.
