Wait. What do you mean? That he somehow backs Mariano Rajoy? I'm dubious about that.

No matter what side of the divide, both Catalonia and the rest of Spain want to remain a part of the European Union. The EU is Putin's nemesis. Putin only seems to be interested in countries where there is a faction that want to leave the EU. Catalonian independence is not that type of movement.

IMO, these issues seem to have been in the making for several decades.  Catalonia has always been a semi-autonomous region.  I got a chance to visit once and even though Barcelona was more cosmopolitan (in the touristy areas), the areas outside of Barcelona seemed to staunchly identify as Catalan. Some even refused to speak Spanish, preferring to speak Catalan.

The Spanish economy is just beginning to emerge from a very deep and protracted recession. During their recession, the Catalonian area was one of the few economic bright spots (their proximity to the Mediterranean makes them a big producer/exporter of certain items). Also with tourism to the Barcelona area, Girona, Costa Brava and other surrounding areas, Catalonia provided (still does), a lot of wealth for the nation.

Catalonians have become embittered by the feeling that they have contributed enormous wealth yet don't have enough say in how they are governed and where their taxes go.

The mayor of Barcelona made an interesting point- she said that she believes that if only the government had held an actual legal, sanctioned referendum, they'd have probably discovered that the majority of people would've voted to stay with Spain.

The implication was that the Spanish government didn't need to use such a heavy hand, Rajoy's government caused the issue to escalate almost to the point of no return.

Still, even though it's been some years since I've been to Barcelona, I can't help but think that there can be a diplomatic resolution if cooler heads prevail.

Rajoy, more than anyone else at this time, is giving steam to the Catalan independence movement at the moment with his heavy handed approach.

Catalonia (Cataluña) was always a semi-autonomous region and now they surely will feel that what autonomy they seemed to have has been yanked. If they couldn't get many Barcelonetans to coalesce around the issue, Rajoy's heavy hand might now provide the catalyst for it.

Having been to the region myself as a student in the 90s, I have to say that this issue was simmering long before Putin ascended the world stage.

If people don't know about the Basques/ETA, it's worth reading about them. For over 40 years, they were known as a terrorist organization by the Spanish government while they were seen by others as a separatist and nationalist organization.

The Basques often used violent and extremist means like bombings.

Not to compare the two movements at all (ETA was a completely different organization with different aims) but just to show that

These type of movements are not new to Spain.

UO: Relying on total abstinence to prevent pregnancies -- not to mention, many diseases -- is not necessarily a bad idea.  But it's unrealistic to believe men and women will abstain (or practice the "rhythm method").  Which is why we NEED unrestricted access to contraceptives, as well as sex-ed programs that educate our youth about the risks of unprotected sex.

Doesn't seem to be taking up TOO much of his time, though, since every time I see a photo of Putin, he's half-naked and riding some form of livestock.

    • Well, since I'm still up unexpected past my growing-into-it bedtime. lol.   I finally got to rewatch Monday's. I even rewatched Friday's to take it all in. Now that we got the reveal and hit the climax of the SilkPress Sheila storyline, now we get to watch the aftermath and/or turns that come with its climax. So far, so good. Friday left us with three cliffhangers. And what I found surprising was how I felt about them over a rewatch.    I know some of you all felt a way about the dialogue during Kat vs Eva. I remember liking it more the first time around and it was nice for them to have these scenes to establish more of a frenemy vibe for them going forward. That still held up. But I found myself agreeing with you all about that dialogue. lol. Still, it was nice to have both of their POVs.   Second up was Silk Press Sheila vs the Duprees. And I was happy to get a brief spat with Dani in there. But the rest standouts for me was Anita and Martin. Haters can hate and given the tail end of the episode, I will agree to a fault, but Brandon has impressed and he was on fire on Monday and had great subtle work on Friday. And that subtle work made it all the better. Like I believe I said when I was watching...BC has a much better grip on his character and seems to be realizing what his tics are so has started to be able to know when to turn it up and when to dial it down. And for the most part (emphasis on most), he got that. Meanwhile, TT was giving fierceness, and I was here for every minute of it. Her reading SilkPress. Her being quip about it. Her 'BE STILL.' Ooooo she had a chokehold on me as Anita gave what I was expecting her to SilkPress. WORTH THE WAIT. I also loved Vernon's CHOOSE SILENCE. I wonder though if SilkPress will figure out Martin's condition from her observing Anita and Vernon with him.   And speaking of worth it...Oooo YES Nicole vs Ted was worth totally worth it. Oooooo I knew DD would nail it, and it was all so well done. The fight between the part of Nicole who is a therapist vs Nicole as a woman who wants to express how she feels. And being so angry. And how there would be moments when it would shoot out of her. And how she would restrain herself. But how she felt she should not be restrain. Just the levels of processing and layers. And DD played it all so well. I do wish Maurice gave just a little bit more, but overall, I thought he did a good job even if it was just Ted coming across as a deadbeat and not at all redeemable. And Kat being there for her mother was so beautiful.   Minority, but I love the montage though yes, it did run a little long. Given how the Duprees like to bond (and also as I mentioned from my own very recent family experiences), it did not seem out of place to me.     That said...let's see how the aftermath worked in today's episode. Overall. Cuz RC can be hit or miss.
    • I wonder whose brilliant (

) idea it was to do an almost complete rip-off of the "who killed Tom King"-storyline. That's some quality style writing right there.....
    • The show is done. It got canceled at the end of January. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2025/02/fox-first-run-cancels-dish-nation-person-place-or-thing-pictionary-759232
    • I believe it. ESPECIALLY that last one.
