Tr*mp doesn't care about anyone or anything except power and popularity. He has zero principles. He likes some dictators because he perceives them as powerful or famous, despite their horrid ideas.
He disliked John McCain because McCain had been a prisoner of war, which Tr*mp perceives as "weakness".

Tr*mp thinks that if you have power or popularity, you are good. If you don't, then you're not. It's all about the ratings or whatever.

I think the takeaway is that Tr*ump was cordial to Mamdani because he thinks Mamdani is popular/famous.

Mamdani was there to ask for funding for New York City, and to do that, he played into appeasing the Tr*mp ego.
