Holy shít.

Some background: The very accurate Iowa Selzer poll has been highly predictive in recent years re: midwest voting across the country. A good result for Trump would be anything from +10 to +15. A good result for Harris or any Democrat would be only being behind anywhere 1 to 8 points. Harris being up in Iowa was considered unlikely.

This is the final Selzer poll of 2024, released 4 minutes ago.

^ I can't believe we are so close to having our first woman (of color) president, but if we don't we end up with Trump again. American society 2024 is wild. I'm pretty hopeful coming down to the wire. Also, until the last few weeks I had no idea so many women were still afraid to vote against their husband's wishes.

Exactly.  Nor did they get their way, I think, when Josh Shapiro was passed over for VP.  Tim Walz has proven himself to be very popular with the base, but Shapiro's probably more their ideal running mate.

For me, however, the question remains: if the top donors didn't want Kamala Harris, then whom DID they want?  Who else had a high enough profile within the Democratic Party to run against Trump?

And in both cases, Trump would have handed the Democratic Party its' collective asses, because there's no way either of those gents (or any other white guy) could've run against him and won.

We were behind Joe Biden until we weren't, largely because of the goodwill he had engendered in the wake of the pandemic; and even though I'll remain pissed over how he was forced out until the day I shuck off this mortal coil, at the same time, I will concede that Kamala Harris' ability to pull together a campaign and party in record time proves how very much this country was eager for another change.

I will talk about the Joe thing more when this is over. Maybe he could've done it, maybe not. Doesn't mean I am any happier with how it happened than anyone else. It was shameful how it went down. But I'm very happy with where we are atm.

What the crisis this summer reminded me of, though, was that Joe was haunted by not running in '16 when the party (and Obama) told him not to. He believed he could have beaten Trump then. I think he was right. Imagine that world.

Martin takes a break from showing up on the Sunday shows drunk and sullen about Kamala to throw this out there, and he's right:

I think he was right, too.  If nothing else, Joe Biden would not have been as vulnerable to the far-left as Hillary Clinton was.  I mean, they tried their best to hurt him four years later, and they're trying their best to hurt Kamala Harris now.  In the long run, however, it seems like little-to-none of what they did or are doing is making the kind of impact that they had made on HRC back in '16, when you had a candidate who was a sort-of pariah even among members of her own party.

Despite the GOP's best efforts, this election comes down to one issue: the abortion ban.  By reversing Roe, the GOP, with help from SCOTUS, went too far, underestimating women in the process.  Now, I'm not suggesting that Kamala Harris WILL win, but if she DOES win, make no mistake: "it's the abortion ban, stupid."

It's interesting that Harris is leading so much with senior women. Those folks remember what it's like not to be able to have a credit card in your own name. What it means to go to the back alley or Mexico for an abortion too. Oh, and they vote.

We'll never know if Biden would have won. Choosing Kamala was the dirtiest thing I remember the Democrats ever doing. We'll never know if it had to be done. I do think we had to pull out every stop to try to beat 45. As much as many of us disdain the people who worked for Trump last time, some of them said "no" when it came to it. This time he'll have his yes men in place and there will be far fewer people surrounding him who even want to say no.

It doesn't surprise me. My mother had to go down to Tijuana and remembers every moment.

I happen to think Dobbs but also the Puerto Rico mess and Michelle Obama's key statement to women (your husband doesn't need to know your vote) have been essential this cycle.

    • I agree. I really have enjoyed this story from the beginning. I feel like it needed the time for us to care about Doug. They've done a nice job of explaining his motives and making me care for him. I still feel like he's doomed and Vanessa will end up being a widow and now I'm invested in that *not* happening now that I've fallen for him. Friday was good but so was the entire week. I think they're doing such a nice job of keeping things moving. We got good movement with Bill's story this week, Chelsea is attempting to date, Andre and Dani are having tough conversations about their relationship, of course Anita reunited with Sharon. There is *so* much going on and I didn't even cover all of it.  I wish all of the soaps would take a page out of BTG book and start rotating their stories. I love that everybody is getting a chance to shine and they don't just sit on one lead story to the point you get sick of it.
    • Did Jordan Clarke have a departure sometime between 1985 and 1989? I know Robert Newman had three runs: 1981-1984, 1986-1991, 1993-end.
    • Well, they usually weren't on the show at the time for long until the late 90's. But yeah, they really deserved a story centered on them, and not through the lens of Reva.
    • Chelsea was doing the absolute most today! Why was she introducing her sister to a woman she doesnt know? That whole scene was embarrassing. Madison needs to stay away from her bc she is too immature
    • Gosh, what a waste with Lunacy. Why have her live with $B, reveal Finn, pardon her, etc What makes this story incredibly hollow is that what Luna is asking isn't unreasonable - to spend time with her cousin father. She's not asking to move in with them. How hard with it be for Finn to throw her a bone by, say, I'll meet you for lunch/coffee once at week at the hospital cafeteria. Lunacy isn't going to hurt Finn. In fact, all her crimes were related to finding her father and it turns out to be someone she's loved her entire life. Instead of course-correcting the nonsense of last summer, Brad somehow found a way to make this worse! That's a skill... Of all the younger actors B&B has cast during the past 5 years, LY has shown the most growth and range. Why get rid of her?
    • On the subject of sets (seems more interesting to discuss than the actual show)  Some sets we don't see anymore Lauren/Michael apartment (haven't seen that in years) Victoria's house (are Marian/Tessa living there?) Apartment above Crimson Lights (I think Chelsea was the last resident) Penthouse (Lily's home) Chancellor Estate (Devon/Abby) Chancellor office (once Dark Horse) Nick's house GCAC room (used as residence/hotel room for several characters) Some of these may pop up again. The tack house, for example, was not seen for many months before being used again. Have I missed anything?
    • Thanks for searching through everything. Worked on them so long, just too lazy to check for those links myself, so I am glad you chose to do it! I guess I never did type out anything for 1973-1977 in regards to the preemptions, but they are on the charts at least (and this far back, they don't seem to do any of those "breakouts" anymore, so things are simpler in the 1970's, so eventually I could type those out).
    • I dump on the Y&R sets problem all the time, but BOLD is no better -- and they're not even introducing new sets. All of their sets are years old, and very few look like they're inhabited by people with money. Is that going to change with this move? I'd rather they save the money spent on another remote, which is no better than an HGTV travelogue, and get some new/better sets.
    • The donut posts here make up for a Friday show that was barely meh. Aside from seeing Anna, I really didn't care much about anything else. While I understand the thought behind breaking up all the sadness with "other scenes," I'd rather they moved right to John's funeral. Instead of hearing a stupid story about John changing some minor character's tire 20 years ago, just move on to the crying. I also thought the Chad and Cat scenes were a waste. I realize not everyone is devastated by John's death to the point of not functioning, but going sky diving is a choice. By the way, Jack and Jennifer are giving me nothing on this return. Please leave asap. DAYS did such a great job with John's death, so ending the week this way was a letdown.
    • Add Dr. Montgomery to list of fine women on this show! I hope the show goes forward with Madison/Chelsea and then once they're developed, bring back Allison, who is now divorced or a widow, for a Madison/Chelsea/Allison triangle.  It would definitely be the hottest triangle in daytime.
