Debunking the rumors and outright lies about Hurricane Helene and the relief efforts

the Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer has a regular feature called "Reality Check".  From the blurb:
      "Reality Check
NC Reality Check reflects the Charlotte Observer’s commitment to holding those in power to account, shining a light on public issues that affect our local readers and illuminating the stories that sets the Charlotte region apart. Email [email protected] "

Here's a new Reality Check article:
"Helene fact check: Here are the rumors and the reality in Western North Carolina"

        ^ Well worth reading.
Some of the rumors and lies are insane, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene's nonsense.
But also other lies that might seem reasonable to the naive,
either because they are carefully crafted lies that *seem* real, or because the lies have been claimed as true by someone they believe, or simply because these lies have been repeated so incessantly.

It's good to have the facts onhand when talking with friends/relatives/neighbors who sincerely believe this garbage.

Any conversation we can have with anyone, if it changes one vote --- that one vote could make a difference in a local or national election.

Another "Reality Check" feature (fact-checking article from the Charlotte Observer)

"Starlink reconnects Western NC reeling from Helene. Who gets credit becomes political."
(bringing Starlink internet to the region after the hurricane damaged the local Internet infrastructure)
          https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/business/article293356009.html

The article says that Trump falsely claimed credit, saying that he requested the units from Elon Musk, and a Republican congressmen claimed Trump got Musk to do it.
But FACT: actually FEMA had already requested Starlink for this purpose and the system was already in N.C. when Trump made his claim.

It also says that *previously* (months or years ago) there had been a grant application to provide Starlink to the region.  Now, Republicans and rumormongers are blaming Biden admin for denying that application back then.
FACT: the reason the grant was denied back then:

After Starlink filed that application, the FCC determined that it didn’t qualify for funding. According to a letter from the FCC chairperson, the agency found that Starlink:

          • Couldn’t provide internet at the required speed set by the FCC.
          • Would have imposed “high start-up costs on rural consumers,” requiring subscribers to buy a $600 dish to access internet.
          • Proposed using some funds to provide internet to places like parking lots and road medians, which are not underserved rural households like the program intended.

            Edit. My error.
My intention was singular, not plural -- the autocorrect changed it to congressmen from congressman, as the article referred to a specific person.
But the bigger error I made was that the article
actually says that a N.C. Republican *state senator* claimed this.
            Not a congressman.

Yikes that I messed up in relaying a fact-check!

(I mean we already know that Republican U.S. congresspersons are telling lies, but it's important that I not add to the misinformation!)

The legendary Sally Field shares her abortion story. Warning: This gets considerably detailed about her horrific experience and is not for the faint of heart.

                      Watching/listening, I cried a lot.

Then I pictured Norma Rae standing on the table holding up a Kamala sign.

There seems to be a lot of butt hurt males over at TwitX because Kamala Harris dared to go on the Call Her Daddy podcast as above.

The same people who were roasting Harris for not doing more press are now saying it's inappropriate for her to go on podcasts during the Helene aftermath. And of course she is still being attacked over not doing enough media...or not doing the right kind of media. It's a full court press, likely because they think if they push hard enough they can get Trump the "mandate" he is now demanding.

Autocorrect can be a plague (mine changed that immediately to plaque) but it is still strange to me that Politico let "neigh on" get through for "nigh on". How about "nearly" if "nigh on" is too hard?

Great post @te. though looking back on my older posts in this thread, I guess you see that I basically agree with you. I think ultimately it did become a big issue (and us soap fans know this well) where the powers that be felt that they had to focus on the "they were made for each other" relationships you mention which I never bought into (in general I don't buy into that reality, though I think it can happen, but found it especially forced here.) I am pretty good friends with one of the writers on the show and know one of the other writers (much of the writer's room was Canadian--and to their credit, gay,) but have never felt comfortable asking them more about the creative process on the show because they're rightfully proud of the show, and I just know my many issues with it would somehow come out.

However, when watching the reboot (WHY was it even named Queer as Folk?) it did strike me how with this remake Cow/Lip decided they wanted to be far more diverse than the original UK series was. And yet, I can't remember any major character on it ever being a person of colour? Even for the time that seems surprising...

I've seen a number of other articles like this from the early '70s which feel like propaganda. One I remember was in Daytime TV with a Somerset actress who was speaking against women's lib - I think the title of the article was along the lines of SHE PREFERS A LAMB CHOP OVER A KARATE CHOP.
Sandra's marriage ended in divorce, so if she did sacrifice her career for him, I hope she didn't regret it.

That's wild--the first paragraph seems to go against almost everything else in the article.

                                    Young Doctor Malone

Yeah, this is what made me do a double blink: "Tracey's sister, Faye Bannister, failed to wipe herself out in a suicide attempt but is grieviously injured. Her recovery Is poor because she knows that her Illegitimate daughter, Lisha, hates her"

I'm intrigued if anyone listened to Young Dr Malone in 1958-1960 and watched the TV version considering they had different storylines.

Sandra Smith(Julie) mentions GL in this article. Not sure what she's getting at. Seems frustrated by GL's stories but wants to get married and let her husband lead the way.
NEW YORK- The lady doctor on CBS' The Interns" is not a member oi Women's Liberation. In fact if there's a guy around with a tremendous amounf. of drive seeking a helpmate, Sandy Smith is move than willing to give up her career and spend the rest of life as the wife of a successful man. "Don't misunderstand me," she explained during a recent New York visit. "I'm for equal rights for women But in my own case. . . I'm happy with my lot.'' Being pro male is nothing new for Sandy.
She gave up a lucrative steady job on the popular daytime drama "Guiding Light" because she could no longer put up with the "momism" which she feels dominates all daytime housewife oriented television.
"I just couldn't get up in the morning any more .knowing I had to go through another day of that stuff. When my contract came up tor renewal it was like a parole, of course the money was helpful and I met a lot of talented actors, but the stories are a joke."
Somewhere along the line the Minneapolis born Miss Smith has lost her drive for stardom, a refreshing trait to discover in a young actress. She doesn't fight with her male co stars for the best roles but she turns in a professional job and frankly likes it when the writers give her character. Dr. Lydia Thorpe, a nice piece of the sub-plot. Perhaps because she has no stars in her eyes, she's very popular on the set and can even get sway with criticizing a scene she's not in. 'The boys have to be conscious of the fan mail count: and the way the weekly leads are distributed." she points- out, "1 don't blame them. Nighttime TV belongs to the men. With the exception of comedy stars, I can hardly think of a young actress who has made it big off a TV series." She enjoys acting but she enjoys life more.Since she ran away from daytime drama and moved to Hollywood, the jobs have come easily for the talented redhead. She had guest star roles on "Gunsmoke,' "Hawaii FiveO," "Bonanza, The FBI," and "The Flying Nun" before signing on for "The Interns." She hopes the show runs and runs been because this time the storylines do not infuriate her and she looks forward to coming on the set every morning. "After all," she concludes, "I'm earning good money while looking for a husband. As for ambition, well I'll save it for him."

Agreed about the off camera repercussions to Charles, but I really did love Nick and Lorraine. (And Roscoe was great in that role I think--I assume when he broke his contract with AMC it was partly being upset because he assumed he would be playing another potential romantic lead--and not another out and out villain. Not that that sopped him from reprising Mitch on OLTL.)

Tom was important to AMC but by that time I wouldn't say he was a lead, similar to GH with Tom/Simon and OLTL with Kevin/Rachel.
At least The City did pair Nick and Lorraine in its final months, even as the network had been phasing out black/white relationships on their other soaps. They had good chemistry. The only downside is bringing Lorraine in meant that Charles had a completely miserable ending, which he didn't deserve.

Not yet, but I will do! I think she'd be fine with me sharing though how frustrating she finds working with the soap world now. She has a couple of fairly high profile actor interviews lined up, but they weren't easy to get (and apparently a lot of the remaining soap "press" like SOD seem to actually pay to have interviews, etc.)

Would Tom and Livia on AMC count? (they were one of the storylines when I started watching AMC so always stick out in my memory--also I am fond of both actors and characters--although it's true that by then Tom was no longer really a leading man on AMC...)
