In retrospect, I wonder about the creative choice to make Winter go mad?

It has been said that EON had a tradition that justice would always be served, so I guess Winter could not have maintained a life in Montecello and a relationship with Logan, if she was a murderer.  However, the madness absolves her from any malice in the killing of Wade.  Winter was not a cunning woman who plotted to murder Wade in order to get away from his constant threats, nor did she act in self-defense fearing a physical threat from Wade.  Yet, as I recall, there was no foreshadowing to her decent into madness during the trial, nor was there any obvious indication that she was lying.  So, I guess, given the times, madness was the only acceptable excuse.

It also makes Logan's closing theory about the fur collar in the videotape a very lucky observation, because the witness testimony from Wade's nosy neighbors was hardly the only evidence that Mike and Draper had against Winter.

Before 1982 Bay City was anywhere or nowhere. It just was never stated. Then, in 1982 someone decided to place it & they put it outside of Chicago, in Ilinois just like all the other towns in Irna Phillip universe - Oakdale, Springfield, Henderson, Somerset, I'm blank, but there are a few more.

Well, now that you say that, I'm not sure. They are supposed to be representative of the bedroom communities around Cincinnatti, home of P&G. But that again comes back to the same spot. I am betting right now, even thought this is off the top of my head, that it's an error & it should be removed from the list. This is interesting. In fan lore things come up sometimes that are just simple mistakes that got in somehow & it takes awhile before someone notices it & fixes it. Thnx for bringing this up. I'm glad I posted about Irna's universe today. It's always a good day to catch a glitch!

Based on promo pics, it sounded like she was more like a tortured 40s film noir character.  A life of hard knocks..and she and Raven sparred alot due to Logan.

I do agree she was tough as nails in Day of the Dead..and atypical of female leads in 80s horror movies. It's probably why she has had lasting appeal in the horror movie genre.

Horror movie fans are as passionate as soap fans.  Shame 1978 episodes weren't available so we could see more of her work on EON.

Only a handful of soap stars have the crossover fanbase in horror, like Barbara Crampton (who has a very strong career in horror film/TV these days and really doesn't need to come back to daytime, though I wish she would). Kelli Maroney is known more for her beloved genre work while being reviled on daytime. Others like Kevin Spirtas, Scott Reeves, etc. have it and have done their share of appearances or BTS documentaries but aren't as visible. Horror fans never forget. It did my heart good when OLTL went off the air and Kassie DePaiva, who was so heartbroken about it, started doing more cons for Evil Dead II and was fully embraced.

I do wonder why Cardille never did more daytime, but I guess there was the stigma and I have no Idea if she even acts today.

Just to clarify briefly (I know this is not the AW thread, so I won't go into elaborate detail), both Bay City (AW) and its spin-off Somerset were acknowledged ON AIR during the 1970s to be in Michigan. The state for Bay City later changed to Illinois without explanation. (Careless indifference to history by TPTB always vexes me.)

And, Somerset was mentioned as a town on The Edge of Night.    When Mke was working for the State Crime Commission (and was not seen for a number of months, to which the show attributed to his being in Capital City), there were thoughts that perhaps Laurie was in danger.   She was sent to Somerset to wait until the trouble with the loan sharking syndicate was over.

I have often felt (although I have been told that the original Somerset Bible called for Sam, Lahoma, Missy and Ricky to move there from Bay City) that Somerset was originally intended to be a spin-off show from The Edge of Night (rather than Another World).    The Edge of Night was higher rated than Another World at the time, and Henry Slesar had submitted a new soap opera based on spies to CBS (which was rejected).    Mr. Slesar even began writing Somerset during its first year (following the departure of the show's credited creator, Robert Cenedella).

Incidentally, several of the performers on Somerset (Alice Hirson, Edward Krenner, Ann Wedgeworth) had appeared earlier on The Edge of Night, but that has nothing to do with what I have posted above.

In 1982, someone placed it in Illinois. Supposedly the bedroom communities around Chicago represented the bedroom communities around Cincinnati, where P&G has its Headquarters. And, there was a visual one day in one of the shows of a young man on a motorcycle, standing at a crossroads, where signs pointed to some of the cities in the Irna Universe, like Bay City, Oakdale, Somerset, etc. One poster thought it was Carl T. Evans. It could have been Jake McKinnon.

These episodes are first rate examples of how brilliant a writer Henry Slesar was in his day.  So many plot points were being sewn during these episodes that took the show into the next 12 months and beyond with this group of characters.  No soap could ever touch Henry's planning, plotting, breakdown ands scripts.  Casting was superb. Everyone had an identity. These were the days when the terrible sets (what was Erwin thinking!) had no bearing because the scripts and actors were so compelling.  The only downer was that Henry had to scrap Paige's character. Margaret Colin was a revelation.  I think P&G forced her and the brother out after the incest plot (amazing that Henry did this plot way before Kreizman on GL with Cassie and Reva's kids).  The writing for Calvin and his friendships with Steve and Deborah....classy and also unusual for P&G soaps that struggled with black characters for many years.  Superb!

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
