I am so behind bc of a lot of other things. Is there any break in the show coming over the holiday? I'm going to try to mainline through to at least the end of the flashback over the next few weeks.

There is a supposed holiday break being unofficially spoken about, but I've yet to read anything about it.

According to a report via Digital Spy, because of the current model, there will be no holiday break.

I am still over 30 eps behind lol, but the show is really picking up. The Rodwell/Varga-Murphy feud leading back to their criminal pursuers and the school drama is really hooking me in after a cheery but slow start. I'm hoping to mainline most of the backlog over the next week or so, right in time to dive back into Knots Landing S7 (sorry, Knots fans!). And the nice use of Harold as a recap device for new fans (like me) while also giving his troubling subplot a happy end was lovely.

I often find looking at soaps from a starting point (or, well, soft reboot start) to be instructive, both here and with the PP soaps in 2013, or looking at early The City, Ryan's Hope, etc. online. (Even the early AMC episodes we have from 1970 are good for this.) Nothing has changed over the decades - it's refreshing to watch a new or semi-new build from the ground up. It teaches you a lot about the fundamentals of soap. (Doctor Who may be doing this soon in a different genre, though it is not rebooting its continuity.)

Seeing all of the classic faces this past week was fun; it felt like another way of acknowledging the series in the ways they weren't ultimately able to prior to the series' 2022 conclusion. I hope more of this happens as time goes on.

I'm still steadily catching up on my Neighbours backlog but I glanced at the 2024 preview recently posted and I have to say it's remarkable that Guy Pearce appears committed to making semi-recurring appearances as Mike for Jane vs. their immediately breaking up or him being killed off, which is what I'd expected. What a class act.

A genuine class act. I caught up last night! They're really pushing stories forward, which is exciting!

NeighboursFans ran a poll for the most popular 40 characters on the show since it has returned. The results are interesting.

https://www.backtothebay.net/news/2024/01/25/neighbours-most-popular-character-of-the-revived-show-revealed/

I'm not too surprised at the low placements of characters like David and Leo because I've never known them to be popular when I go to any forums or Twitter. I AM a little surprised at Mackenzie not even making the top 20 - I think that shows the toll that this Haz storyline has taken on her (or maybe I was just in a bubble and the character has never been popular). Toadie being so low also seems like something that will be corrected when he inevitably splits with Terese.

I'm very glad that JJ, Wendy and Remi were the top of the list as to me they've been some of the real success stories of the show's return.

It's also a credit to the recasts of Byron and Nicolette to do as well as they did as I really wasn't sure about either of them (especially Byron) early on, and the actress who plays Nicolette has had one of the tougher jobs of a recast, essentially drowning in backstory from the time of her first appearance.

My POV for the so-called "spoiler":

Spoiler

If David is killed off, I don't believe it's permanent, because Takaya Honda is on-set upon everyone returning to set. I do believe the promo sent out is a fake-out for the death.

@Liberty City I won’t mention anything regarding the current spoiler (mostly because I don’t know how the spoiler tags work properly).

However (insert character here) was planned to leave the show before its cancellation in 2022 and their storyline was changed around. If I remember correctly it was going to be part of the end of year cliffhanger. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they do end up leaving now.

That said i’m thinking about things from 2 years ago so I could be way off mark, it could be best to completely ignore me.

Oh, I am well-aware, but said-actor has been on-set since they returned to filming, and even their on-screen children noted they would be working with both of their parents this week. So, unless flashbacks are being filmed, it seems only natural that they won't be leaving the canvas. And their decision to leave was prior to cancellation, etc. And, as we've seen in American daytime (ie: Victoria Konefal), some decisions can be changed. This is all speculation, of course, at this point.

They'd made the outcome so obvious I almost thought we were going to get a fakeout.

David's death was very fitting and provided him closure as a character. It's the type of writing choice which I might sometimes paint as too contrived or clever, but it worked here.

I do think the build from them going to the luxury home to David and Eden going over the cliff was a little rushed, but I'd rather a brisk pace than being dragged out.

The imagery of Aaron and Leo carrying David's corpse up the hill was very powerful.

I was impressed by the work from everyone, but Annie Jones was the one who really got me. The moment where she was keeping herself together to tell Terese and Toadie about David, then collapsed from grief as soon as she said the words - incredibly powerful to me. I'm a stickler for these moments because when done wrong they can feel so false, but I truly believed her.

The scene of a completely shattered Paul sitting on the floor of his penthouse also got me.

Whoever decided that the actor who plays Eden should be given as little dialogue as possible and just look pretty had the right idea. Unfortunately, he's still with us...

I am hoping they are just setting up a red herring with Paul and various people will falsely believe that Paul sicced Eden on them, because if Paul was responsible, it's something I could never see the people in his life forgiving.

I liked that the tension we thought we were going to be getting, with Veronica and Nicolette, was resolved by the two women talking their problems out.

I know David was not a very popular character, and I understand why, but I generally liked him, and I'll miss his presence on the show. I wish he'd been able to have more of the comedy and lighter moments we saw glimpses of here. I also think he and Aaron had become such a stable couple that soaps need, and one of the better lgbt couples on soaps in recent years. Takaya Honda and Matt Wilson never stopped trying, and managed to convince me they were playing a real couple.

I'm glad Takaya was willing to return to give David a proper goodbye, and I'm glad the show gave him - and us - that goodbye.

Spoiler

I'm shocked, because Takaya Honda has been photographed on-set this month... wow. SHOCKED.
