So the first episode of the return just finished airing in Australia, did anyone watch it? What did you think?

Without spoiling, I enjoyed it. I think they did a good job setting up a few future storylines for the rest of the year and obviously the major one that kicks the show off.

I do wish there was a better introduction to the new characters though, even just saying their names more often. I know i’ll learn them eventually but if I had one minor complaint that would be it.

I guess I should check this out - we'll see how newbie-friendly it is.

Oh, the opening recap featuring all the classic standard-def footage reminds me so much of the AMC/OLTL recap videos when Prospect Park brought them back. Sigh.

I like the new family - again, never one with a make-up you'd get on an American soap. I do wonder what the boy's fascination with the area is about.

I have a very passing familiarity with several of the veteran characters, but the youngsters I don't know from Adam so I can't tell who's who or why. Mischa Barton definitely has had a career comedown but looks decent for her age. I wasn't sure what Paul was talking about re: losing people in his family unless it was all meant to signpost the twist.

The somewhat frenetic or overwrought nature of the montage cutting, intros, slightly awkward exposition etc. again remind me a lot of the AMC/OLTL revival pilots, plus the timejump. But that exposition was necessary here as it was there, as well as them being somewhat similar tonally and aesthetically. In both cases a fair bit of it is corny but still on brand for what the audience expects - and the glitzed-up editing style/rhythms remind me a lot of the Euro/UK soaps in general too. None of it's bad per se, just different than what we generally get here in the States (and God knows Neighbours is in a more healthy position than they are atm).

Yeah; they've definitely maintained how they've been as an Australian soap; even Stefan Dennis (Paul) said they wouldn't be Americanized. And I don't think Paul stating he was losing people in his family was a signpost to the twist; I think it had to do with several of his family members not being in the continuation.

Is there a good primer news article on the cast and the families in the wake of the revival, or should I just google wildly?

It is weird to have a new soap to tune into 4 days a week overnight, again a la the PP soaps. (I will stop making that comparison)

Apparently the new opening is slightly different on Aussie TV vs. Amazon? It's interesting that Barton who is supposedly short-term appears to be in it. I do like hearing that the ending is apparently an homage to the classic opening.

So episode 2 wasn’t as exciting as the return was, but it did at least start to fill in some of the gaps between the finale and now. Particularly what happened between Paul/Terese and the rest of the family.

I can’t put it into words but, I still feel like i’m missing a giant chunk of story that my brain’s trying to fill in on its own. It’s no fault of the show that’s just what happens when you’ve been off air for a year and a half.

@Vee

Apologies I didn’t see your post but for spoilers/info about new characters I think this might be what you’re looking for (though i’ve not used the site myself)

However for more of a bio on character histories for longer term characters I find this to be really useful (even if it’s not fully up to date)

The theme is not what I was expecting, yet it is exactly what I was expecting... if that makes sense? Just disappointed the names are no longer included.

The backstory of how Terese & Toadie got together was brief, yet explained a lot. Again, I like them together and while I saw the twist coming, I was still surprised.

So, I watched the first episode of the reboot without seeing any of the show in the past. I was curious to check it out, and it's kind of wild...as someone else mentioned...that there is a new daily soap available.

There were parts I liked, and I can appreciate the use of what appear to be veteran actors in the story. That said, I found it a bit hard to get into as a brand new viewer, and at times, it didn't hold my attention. Obviously, there was the big wedding twist, but as a new viewer, that didn't really grab me.

There is sooo much backstory obviously. I do wonder if a show like this may work better if it started with more of a clean slate...brand new stories/ characters with some veteran characters for the returning viewer...sort of like Dallas did. I'll give it a few more episodes to see if it ropes me in.

I'm wondering if there are any other brand new viewers, like myself, and their take on it.

I wonder if the show would be Daytime Emmy eligible since it streams in the US and is produced by Amazon. It would be great to see more than the "last four" in the US represented.

    • I love the yellow bumpers with the crew lol. That's Donna Lewis as the music at the beginning! I haven't heard her in ages. R.J. and Tea were so hot and so underrated.
    • I think a lot would've gotten over it the same way they got over the Trina recast, especially since it became swiftly clear NAC is never coming back. The key issue, we agree, is Frank. As long as Trina is onscreen he's not touching that. As for Nikolas, honestly I'd kill him off. Adam Huss has done a wonderful job in a very difficult situation but I don't think he has leading man power for a soap opera (not because he's gay, but he's very intense and I don't think it translates to potential lighter or romantic material; his flirting with Ava briefly was strange) and I was holding out for Tyler to recover and return someday. I am not interested in Nikolas #5 or 6.
    • AlwaysAMC - Your posts are a crack up; they make me laugh.  Thanks.  I especially like how detailed you get enthused about something, and how you curtly and flippantly you reject that which you find subpar.  LOL.   What's great about Annie is her increasing rooting value as time goes on.   I often wanted Annie to be victorious.  Watros infuses her with an energy and a vulnerability that really works, even at times when neither should. Soap viewers often remember and talk about the Big Moments, which is fine, but what I also find really interesting is the 1-2 week time frame that follows the Big Moment.  Later, there are scenes between Annie and Rick involving a trip to the hospital (no way am I telling you why and what happens - hopefully no one does) that I think are as well done as the Big Moment.  Astonishing stuff. Oh..and to reiterate...I ain't telling you sh*t.  You'll just have to suffer!  Ain't anticipation grand?  LOL.
    • @alwaysAMC Glad you made it to the soft rock theme. I share your disgust for the Gilly story, as many viewers did. Gilly was never a big character, but she was a part of why the early '90s feel real and different for GL, and she deserved a much better exit. This was also the last worthwhile role Amelia Marshall had on daytime (I don't even know if Passions fans would disagree). This was also Petronia Paley's only major chance at story and as someone who always appreciated her work, I'm sorry it did not go better for her. And I liked Charles Ewing a great deal on Loving, so I was even more unhappy with how they treated Griffin. It's a deeply offensive role, in many ways.  As for slapping, you may enjoy this, if you are able to find anything onscreen underneath all the ham. It really goes into hysteria in the second clip. As a bonus, you also get a quick glimpse of why the Billy and Mindy recasts were not accepted by viewers. One positive I will say about this clip is that it's one of the few times I remember the show making clear that Roger was able to defend himself if he had to do so.

    • ER Season 15 (first-ish time) BUFFY Season 3 (First time)
    • Probably less than a NBC or ABC soap. There were occasionally slaps. Women slapped men. And parents occasionally slapped their children. There was a period when Mindy and Roxie would fight. But slaps between women were few and far between. The only one between women I can really recall is Vanessa slapping Nadine. There was once where Bea Reardon almost slapped Vanessa, but she didn't. There are probably more, but in general, I always thought CBS soaps (aside from B&B, which used to love Stephanie slapping Brooke) shied away slapping, sort of the way they limited "hell"s and "damn"s to so many per week.

My favorite moments are with Erika and then Robin and Tim Stickney around 7/8 minutes. There are also little yellow bumper moments with the crew, which I enjoy more than the real ones.  There's also a music video at the end to I Will Survive, with Linda Dano and JFP having a cameo (they certainly do know how to survive). Also a fun bit with a frazzled crew member showing cards with the names of every EP she presumably worked for at the show.
    • I think in the long run they can probably get more out of Gio, even though I know GM probably won't be around long enough for it to matter. The show has a real problem on how to handle Nik in future, which affected Spencer. Laura is moribund and her role in Spencer's story didn't do her many favors. They would have kept Esme around even longer. A lot of Sprina fans would have hated GM as he was replacing NAC. And even the fans who did accept him wouldn't have mattered because Frank likely would have split that relationship up ASAP. There's a good chance we'd get a Spencer/Emma pairing, only with Emma and the actress playing her getting dragged on social media every day and with people calling her a racist.
    • I like the pool set as well.  It's something different, guys and girls in skimpy clothes and all that.  I dislike when they have characters in full on business attire having meetings there though.  That seems silly. The pool depth is also ridiculous.  They should just have characters sitting on the side with their feet in the pool if they can't shoot it correctly.
