It's hard to believe, but considering OLTL is truly ending, I needed another soap. I'm currently watching Y&R (FF mostly), DAYS (which I enjoy) and B&B (which is boring me these days). In addition I'm collecting and watching Passions from the beginning, which is very entertaining. I decided the most compatible soap to replace OLTL would probably be Hollyoaks. It's different and has that similar mix of comedy, drama, old and young. I decided to start with the week of Hollyoaks Later, along with the corresponding week of the main show. I haven't watched since the very beginning of Paul Marquesses tenure. Will post my thoughts soon!

I can't watch this until they stop acting like Brendan is a victim and that Ste should bow down to him. I get annoyed when I read comments that Ste needs to know how much he hurt poor precious Brendan by thinking Brendan was a murderer. Brendan IS a murderer, but beyond that, he beat Ste black and blue, again and again, and loved every minute of it. This story has repeatedly glorified domestic violence and made a violent, sadistic monster into the true victim. Ste is now a worthless character.

Is Brendan the one with the porn mustache? I liked what little I saw of him, probably just because I thought it was cute. I almost fell into a coma watching my first episode, but I'm going to wait until I watch the full week and all of Later to make a decision. I know soaps can have off days and I know the way Hollyoaks rotates it's cast, it can also have off weeks. I'm just hoping that Later is interesting enough it makes me want to continue watching the main show. Knowing Michaela is back is definitely a good thing that makes me want to continue watching. If they announced a return for Zak I'd probably have a heart attack.

The first episode I watched had a lot of teens featured and they seemed terrible compared to what we had with Kirkwood and even Allen. There was a girl Sinead and her friends at a party. I also caught the name Bart and didn't care for him either. I actually didn't mind Sinead, but the other girls were pretty dull.

The Hollyoaks Later episode was better, but this cast is definitely going to take some adjusting. I was happy to see so much of what McQueen's are left since that was my favorite family. I do wish they could try and get the actor who plays John Paul back.

Ditto, CarlD2. I just can't watch that storyline (or any storyline) that focuses on Brendan/or Ste, until the show stops focusing on the abuser and "his problems", while making fodder for what Ste's been through with letting himself be involved with that man. And yes, these two characters will never be the "saintly gays" of US based soaps, but I just don't find entertainment in domestic violence, no matter how "hot" the portrayers may be in the fictional storyline.

I finally finished Hollyoaks Later which was the weakest of the series, but very entertaining. Then I start the next week of the main show and it seems so dull. Were they written by different people? I know Bryan Kirkwood still wrote Later after he'd left the main show. Maybe there is a similar arrangement. Also shocked at the lack of fallout from Rae's death so far. Perhaps her body is hidden and hasn't been discovered yet. Still, I'd expect somebody to mention she's missing at least. That was the big cliffhanger on Later and should be the main thing they pick up on.

With the main show the cast seems too large and so many of these actors and characters seem bland. It was awkward seeing Jacqui who is nothing like that spitfire I remember. All in all the show is watchable enough that I'll be back full time. It's just as mediocre as my American soaps. Maybe I should give Eastenders or Emmerdale a shot, but I fear they'll be similarly uneven. At least I have history with Hollyoaks.

All the British soaps are uneven to poor now - honestly I'd recommend going back and watching old Corrie/Eastenders/Emmerdale/Brookside, or Hollyoaks (not a lot of that is available pre-2005).

I think Later was done by the same people this year who did the main show.

Anybody know where americans can see episodes of the Hollyoaks? This show always interested me. A soap with young people on it that actually is successful. That was every american soap opera writer and EP's dream in the 2000's. I love the current opening package. I think it's more creative and put together than the rock version (which i thought was very trashy.)

    • I tend to have two minds about Tawny (Kathy Najimy) fainting during Soapdish's big reveal. You're the costume designer, if anything, you should have known the whole time. I guess it's an application of what TV Tropes calls the "Rule of Funny." Every time I watch Delirious, I always want the genuine romance in John and Mariel's reunion at the deli counter to last longer. Film critics had their knives out for Sally in this period. I'll start a separate thread on the movies page.
    • I don't think so, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was Dumas this whole time.
    • Tamara Tunie was serving up grand dame diva fierceness.
    • Nick told Victoria that he and Sharon had married in England.  Victoria was shocked.  Then she realized he was kidding.  He confirmed it was a joke and they're platonic. I don't even know what to say about that.
    • It's funny you say that because part of the entertainment of the trials on the show are all the day players who come on as witnesses and jurors.  I'm certain it was like the Law and Order of its time. It employed so many New York actors, that if you look close enough, there's usually someone vaguely recognizable in the courtroom.
    • I will defend Dante.  People already suspect he may be a bit unstable from time to time (from his time as a prisoner).  And, he's taking care of other people's kids from time to time.  So, he has reason to be cautious with those in his care.
    • Josh continues to try and milk Abbott/Newman rivalry. First it was Billy/Victoria, then Kyle/Summer, then Noah/Allie (that worked out well) and now Kyle/Claire. Do we have any inkling when Billy Flynn will arrive and who he will play? I'm sure Cole's illness will mostly play offscreen. What's in store for Nick and Sharon? Is it time to put them back together? I can't see any other romantic options. Nick has no children on the canvas to play off, as Christian is never seen. Sharon has only Mariah onscreen.
    • I would appreciate (if they're not coming), for future scripts to refer to them by their iconic hairdos.  For example, if Hope needs to call Chelsea because Bo has Sepsis, I'd like Shawn-D to say, "My Mom called Chelsea (the one with the sassy short black hair) for an update." Also, new rule, if Melanie does return, she needs to dye her hair back to red.  I googled who she was five times during Victor's funeral.

    • Broderick, thank you for all of the info [I edited for space]. I am so grateful for everyone filling in the blanks for me. I suspected the Nora/Eliot scene was very important and it was setting something up but I didn't know what. Can't wait to see it play out. The two actors had such a great back and forth. I should have made the Paige/Patty Hearst connection. I thought Paige was in love with Brian from the first episode I watched but it seemed as if they were brother and sister. Steve kept being affectionate with her so I assumed he was the love interest. Then she was affectionate with someone else and well..she's a very busy woman. I can't wait to see Frances Fisher show up. (I'm trying to be vague because I don't know what would be a spoiler in this storyline) Now it makes sense why Draper would be upset. I didn't get the whole background of why he didn't go to NY. I'm a sucker for good acting, so I might still side with April and Margo, if the writers don't give Draper more to do besides yelling.  He had more chemistry with Logan, but I know that's not happening.  Something else I noticed: the show really takes care with even the smallest parts. The acting is superb. Too often, I noticed on older soaps they don't take care with the recurring or day players (Ryan's Hope was so bad with this that I couldn't make it through some episodes). It's only been six episodes, but so far, the casting department was spot on.
    • I thought Dante was overreacting.  Gio made some mistakes but he's young and he tried.  It's not like he dragged two 14 years to a party and made them get blackout drunk.  Dante can have the initial upset reaction, but to go on and on was a bit much.
