AMC: F

JHC let Julia Barr go, and Marcy Walker, and Cady McClain and basically structured AMC around the Laverys and Careys. Her biggest contribution stylistically was to bring in handheld cameras and use a film-like look, which imo takes away from the intimacy and theatricality that soaps should have. I just think she's completely clueless not only about what used to make Pine Valley such a special place, but what used to make soaps so compelling to watch.

AMC: B+ I think JHC has done great things at the show. I love the "film" like quality the show has. She has made some mistakes but I think she is good at what she does. I was a big fan of Port Charles and that was in large part because of her.

ATWT: C- It's time for Goutman to go.

B&B: A- I love Bradley Bell.

DAYS: B+ Ed Scott is a visionary and has done great things with the production values on the show.

GH: B JFP is a really hands-on EP and I think she is being restrained from higher ups like Brian Frons. She was terrific when she was at Santa Barbara.

GL: B Ellen Wheeler is willing to shake things up and for that I think she deserves major props. She is producing the show on a shoe-string budget and thats admirable.

OLTL: A What I have seen of OLTL Frank Valentini is doing a great job. He has been with the show for years in many capacities and it is evident he loves the show.

Passions: C+ What she has had to endure with all the ups and downs with the show being cancelled twice within a year and she is still able to get the job done deserves some praise.

Y&R: B Josh Griffith is loads better than LML and I loved that he was part of the team that created Sunset Beach.

AMC: D

Carruthers is an idiot. Using the film style look/shaky camera, not fighting for Julia Barr or giving her sendoff, saying the scenes where Ryan/Josh take advantage of Zach and drug him from last year were "fun", lying to James Scott (ex Ethan) about his future with the show.

GH: F

Phelps is The Wicked Witch of The West in daytime. The woman has taken one of the best soaps and turned it into an embarrassment to the genre. Everything on this show is depressing, Sonny has turned into a hateful monster (I loved him before), women are violated on a constant basis, the mob are looked at as heroes, women are boring for the most part, creating Sam McCall and Claudia Zacchara (the worst characters ever created on this show), allowing Sam's history to be rewritten to prop her up on countless occasions.

GL-F

Ellen Wheeler is the worst EP in the history of daytime. This twit has managed to unite most of the fans against her sorry butt. This woman's vision has managed to destroy everything that I loved about Guiding Light in four years. I hope she never get another job in daytime again.

ABC

AMC: F

Aimless writing, wooden acting, atrocious production values - name the sin, and AMC has committed it. As with Jean Dadario Burke before her, Julie Hanan Carruthers has proven the network, and not the EP, is in charge of this show.

GH: F

Same as above - and perhaps, even more so where Jill Farren Phelps and GH are concerned. I'm so accustomed to JFP leaving her (black) mark on her shows, it shocks me that "her" GH doesn't feel as if she actually produces it!

OLTL: C

Fronsie and Frank Valentini better get down on their knees and thank (God for) Ron Carlivati. Otherwise, OLTL's grade would be as poor as Julie's and Jill's.

Average (A=5; B=4; C=3; D=2; F=1): D (and yes, I'm rounding up).

CBS

ATWT: C

Writing-wise, ATWT is a mess. Some good ideas, some WTF ones, but lousy execution all around. Nevertheless, Christopher Goutman continues to prove, if nothing else, that he knows how to put on a classy production (poor casting and un-casting decisions notwithstanding).

B&B: B

This show has been up-and-down creatively since the (pseudo-) resolution of Stephanie's shooting, but the production values and "look" of B&B remain as consistent (and impeccable) as always.

GL: "Incomplete"

It might be unfair to judge the show's new production scheme so early for these purposes. What I've seen, I haven't liked; however, I'll conceed they might need time to work out the bugs. But, let me say this: the writing? Is doing GL No. Favors.

Y&R: C

Aside from DAYS, Y&R is probably the most improved soap on the air right now, compared to last year. Josh Griffith, IMO, has not done enough to merit a higher grade, but his team certainly deserves marks for improvement.

Average (excluding GL): C.

NBC

DAYS: C

Could be better but ... could be worse, too. Yes, Ed Scott has made incredible contributions to the show, production-wise. Direction, lighting and sets have improved remarkably. Some actors (not naming any names) continue to grate, but there seems to be more of an effort these days to elicit genuine performances out of the cast. No more is DAYS just a bunch of model-cum-actors posing seductively for the cameras. I only wish the writers would devise some halfway decent storylines (because, hey, Ed Scott can't do everything by himself!).

Average: C.

B&B: A

Brad Bell may have his problems when it comes to story and writing, but B&B does indeed look impeccable as always.

Y&R: B-

I think the show still needs a long way to look as it did, and feel as it did, and be paced as it did, and have compelling stories as it did. But it's better than it was.

    • 1) A-M had an inferiority complex when it came to Phillip. Alan had adopted Phillip (his wife Elizabeth had a stillbirth, Alan then had the babies switched) and always favored him. When A-M came to town, he got involved with Blake as his marriage to Harley was disintergrating, and Blake was married to Phillip at the time (but that marriage was crumbling because a) Beth was alive and b ) Blake kept that from Phillip). But by the time Phillip left town in '91, he and Alan-Michael were on good terms. So whatever A-M's referring to is writer laziness to further this plot. 2) Meredith Reade Bauer was Fletch's sister and Rick's ex-wife. Their marriage broke up after she discovered she couldn't have any more children. After a fight, Meredith and Phillip slept together, she got pregnant. Right before they got married, Rick realized, thanks to a sonogram, that he couldn't be the father. I believe Meredith just told him it was a random ONS, and he accepted that. Meredith had complications, and Rick couldn't decide whether to save her life or the baby's. He asked Phillip to decide for him, and Phillip chose Meredith. It wasn't until after that Rick found out that Phillip was the father, and had chosen Rick's wife over his child.  Not sure why Rick/Blake were "at odds", other than by that time Blake had married Ross, who was Phillip's biological uncle. Phillip's bio parents are Justin and Jackie Marler. 3) Back in '90, Phillip was accused of killing Beth's ex-lover Neil Everest. (Neil was killed by a bomb he planted the night of The Towers opening. He had planned to kill Phillip (and there's some weird twist where Neil had killed his wife and her children in a building collapse or something...but anyway..)  But Gary Swanson (who was plotting with Neil for some strange reason) knocked Neil out and saved Phillip.  Neil had already planted evidence implicating Phillip in the bombing (to make it look like he had been caught in his own trap), so he was charged.  Phillip, Beth and Rick faked Phillp's death. Rick and Phillip planted a cadaver and burned it in a car to make it look like an accident. Beth was pregnant with Lizzie at the time. To divert suspicion, (Mallet was already skeptical that Phillip was alive) Rick and Beth married, which upset Mindy (who was trying to start things back up with Rick) and knew nothing about the plot. When it all came out, Rick, Beth and Phillip were all given community service, and I believe Rick's MD license was suspended. Beth and Phillip went to Arizona, and Rick (I think) first got help from his uncle Mike to start community service out of state.
    • I can't answer 1 & 3, but I can answer this: Meredith is Fletcher's sister. She's a doctor. She and Rick fell in love. At one of the Bauer 4th of July BBQs, they had a fight. She ran into Phillip at a bar and the two of them ended up having sex. Rick and Meredith reconciled and...you guessed it, she turned up pregnant. She didn't know for sure who the father was but she let Rick think it was his. Just before their wedding, he saw a sonogram picture. Being a doctor, he could tell how far along she was and realized he wasn't the father. He still went through with the ceremony (why, don't ask me) and afterwards confronted her about it. She told him she picked up a stranger at a bar. Rick was bitter about it but he still stayed with her. Eventually, the secret came out. Rick was furious about Phillip betraying him. Still, he stayed with Meredith (again, why, I don't know). She had a stillbirth and was left barren. Meredith finally decided to leave him and left SF for good. Rick was awful to her, including after losing the baby. Just was a creep about it. It was hard for me to ever like the character after this storyline. I don't knowl if one of the writers strikes was going on during this story, but it was so, so bad. Rick and Meredith had no chemistry. The way Rick stayed with her, the way she stayed with him, made zero sense to me.

    • 2 kids...its Tyrell and Samantha
    • There was tension between Alan-Michael and Philip because Alan-Michael was sympathetic to Blake (and married her) after Philip left her to chase after an amnesiac Beth, but the show exaggerated that tension when Philip returned. Meredith was Fletcher's sister. She was a doctor. Rick was married to her. Philip slept with her. She got pregnant with his child. When the truth came out, Meredith lost the baby, and she and Rick split up. I think Philip had faked his death to escape murder charges (with Rick stealing a corpse to help him). Someone else will remember more.
    • He has nothing left to do on B&B. He's still written as this perfect angelic godlike person who has bad luck with women.

First publicity image of Keith D. Robinson as Ted Richardson.
    • Ok GL friends - Phillip Spaulding is back! (April 19, 1996) Quick questions so I can get up to speed: 1) Why does Alan-Michael hate Phillip so much? Amanda put him on the wedding list and A-M got extremely upset and said he's the last person he'd ever want at his wedding. 2) Who is Meredith? With Blake's current pregnancy storyline, Rick and Ed have been talking about how Meredith (assuming Rick's girlfriend) left with Phillip's son (or something like that)? They also keep talking about how Blake/Rick were at odds over Phillip too. 3) They said Phillip left town to do community service and avoid getting arrested, or something to that effect. What did he do and why did he really leave? Thanks in advance

    • I know you want Sarah to be an evil genius and I'm all for it but their only discussion of it was on Valentine's day when Xander suggested buying the hospital and Sarah quipped that the situation was not that dire. Then recently he asked her what she knew about sepsis but they never discussed the drug, just that he had heard a cure was in the works. Then she only found out he was buying the hospital yesterday from Kayla.
