90210: Shannen Doherty to Direct Musical

It's official. Shannen Doherty is coming to the CW's 90210 spinoff for multiple episodes this fall, and according to Executive Producer Gabe Sachs, "She's going to direct our musical."

But wait, before you 90-diehards start planning your trip to Broadway to see Steve Sanders in spandex with jazz hands, you should know he meant Shannen's character Brenda, will play the director of West Beverly High's musical--on the show within the show.

Still, pretty awesome, no?

Not to mention, this could mean that Katie Holmes won't be the only TV guest star this season displaying her musical talents. I asked exec producer Jeff Judah if Shannen will be singing or dancing and he said, "It's possible. It's possible."

So where has Brenda been since we last saw her heading off to London to study acting?

According to the See-Dub, "Brenda became a successful theater actress, splitting her time between London and New York....West Beverly Hills High School has approached Walsh to return as a guest director for the school’s musical production."

According to producers, Shannen, Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth are the only ones who've been approached so far to return. "Those are the three," says Sachs. "We’d welcome the others if there was something appropriate that organically fit in with our stories, but we haven’t spoken to them yet."

And executive producer Jeff Judah says they do still have a deal with Tori. "She is exhausted from having the baby and when she’s up for it, she’ll be on the show."

Also:

* The Peach Pit has transitioned into a "hip coffee house" like the Urth Café, and there is a club upstairs. As exec producer Jeff Judah joked, "It's not going to be like [in the old show], 'Hey it's Color Me Badd!' "

* Per Judah, many of the show's real-world lavish lifestyle locations (shopping on Robertson Blvd., etc.) will already be familiar to viewers by way of The Hills and the pages of Us Weekly. He told us, "The audience has become more sophisticated...from following celebrity gossip."

* Quote of the Moment: "The difference between Lucille Bluth and Tabitha is that Lucille likes vodka and Tabitha likes Scotch." — Jessica Walter, formerly of Arrested Development and now of 90210, on what distinguishes her two recent TV characters

Stand by for more 90 dish closer to the big Sept. 2 premiere. In the meantime, what do you think of Brenda's latest turn and the possibility of others returning?

90210: Kelly and Brenda Reunited!

After a 14 year break, Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty have shot thieir first scenes together as Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh for the CW's new 90210(premiering September 2)---and the stage has been set for fireworks. The setup finds Kelly's new beau, English teacher Ryan Mathews(Ryan Eggold), at Kelly's door with bouquet of flowers to apologize for an earlier flub. When he presses the bell---ding-dong, who answers but Brenda Walsh in the flesh! She's babysitting Kelly's 4-year old son.

So how was the reunion for the old rivals? Jennie tells me the two exchanged a "quick hug and a hello" in the van on the way to the set. "It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm not much of a small talker, and I don't think she is either. I was a little nervous because I hadn't seen or talked to her in 14 years. Everyone was making it out to be such a big deal that I think we both fell prey to having that affect us."

Ryan, who introduced himself to Shannen in her trailer, describes the encounter between the women as "very interesting. Everybody was on pins and needles and sort of waiting to see how they'd react. They started off kind of tentative, but by the time we were five takes in, they were giggling and seemed to be reconnecting."

Her real-life on-set fistfight with Shannen is now ancient history, Jennie is cautiously optimistic about their future. "I think it will be OK," she tells me. "We're both grown women, both professionals. Once we were working it felt like a good fit."

As for the drama between their characters, Jennie says, "There might be underlying tension from history[all that squabbling over Dylan McKay], but I think both of them have probably let that go. They're close enough for Kelly to let her babysit her son, so they must be friends."

But perhaps not for long. Ryan says that when he meets Brenda, "She tells me I have nice eyes, we have this moment of awkwardness in the air." Hmmm.....

Jennie is just disappointed that close pal Tori Spelling is missing out on the fun after quitting last week, reportedly over her costars higher pay checks. "I know that Shannen probably doesn't share the feelings that I have for Tori, but I love her like my sister," Jennie told me as she fought back tears while driving on the freeway. She's encouraging fans to launch a Bring Back Donna Martin campaign.

But it seems the 90210 writers have already moved on. The plan had been to give Donna her own clothing line and store, which executive producer Gave Sachs says would have required Donna "to travel to Europe a lot." Now, in the third episode, a new character will be introduced with a trendy boutique of her own, meaning poor Donna may be stuck in Europe indefinitely.

    • Yes, Stacy does this both for early DAYS & early GH. I have written some for her, for DAYS. But just one tiny point & that is that she only deals with DVDs. I realize that is not the point of your posting but it seemed the right thing to clarify. I know that you know that video tapes is past, not present.
    • Hahahha I think sleeping with almost all of your daughters's boyfriends and husbands and getting pregnant... definitely gives Brooke the right to top 1 place. Long live the whore of Beverly hills.

    • CurlyQGrl has DVDs of some episodes, that they can sell, but that doesn't matter. What is helpful: they describe the scenes on the tapes, so you can read that as recaps without ordering anything. Doesn't really give storylines, though, which is what you asked for.  Here's the links anyhow. full menu https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/menu.html GH page https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/menu.html GH 1960s https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1960s.htm
    • I would argue that Another World never played "everything" for laughs. Even when there were comedic scenes in some storylines there were other storylines that were not intended as comedy.  You give 1988 as the end point, and Mary was on the canvas from August 1986 to February 1989, so she must have overlapped with the despised laughs you are referring to at least half of the time she was there. I honestly can't recall any real comedy that Mary would have been part of. I don't think she was lighthearted about choosing between two husbands, MJ's prostitution, Kathleen's death, or even her son Scott dating her daughter Cheryl.  I would have said that the amount of comedy depended on the head writer and there was more comedy under Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin in 1984 than subsequent headwriters. I guess there was an outbreak of more comedy when Cecile kidnapped Cass from his wedding in 1986, but in general the Sin Stalker wasn't presented as funny, Mitch's return wasn't funny, John's arrival wasn't funny, Reginald wasn't funny. The tone was serious even if the plots verged on the ludicrous. And maybe that's what you mean -- but I would make a distinction between intentional comedy and storylines I can't take seriously for other reasons.
    • I'm excited for us to get back to a full weeks worth of episodes and also us beginning to move into the episodes filmed once the show premiered. We're already starting to see changes in the lighting and the way certain characters are styled. Of course we know this week we have our first recast as well. After the big Eva reveal, I hope the show continues to move into a positive direction and that we see them starting to fix some of the things we've all had issues with.
    • It seems like they may have been going in one direction for Andre and then changed their mind. He had this player/bachelor thing going at first where he was messing with Dani, seemed to be feeling Eva, and then somehow smitten by bland Ashley of all people. I feel like Ashley was supposed to be the one that finally made him want to be with someone and settle. The way he talked her up in those earlier episodes was really confusing. The wonderful, amazing nurse Ashley and conveniently she's unattainable because she has a partner, but he can't stop thinking of her and takes these busted pics of her. It was a mess. However, it all seems to have been dropped. I honestly feel like Andre can go. That may be an unpopular opinion but I don't need his breathy final syllable to be content with BTG. It's always like "There's gotta be another wh-ahyy"
    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
    • Does anyone happen to have a recording or any footage of Jennifer’s funeral?
    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.
