God, I hate that song.

Guiding Light tries to present itself as, like... this holy do-good moral right show that you should be watching on TBN or something. It's weird. Those "only LOOOVE can save the WOOORLD" lyrics were cheesy as hell. The shots of the town were pretty, but they don't make me want to watch the show. If you didn't know any better, you would think you're about to watch a show about nature trails rather than a dramatic soap opera.

The only thing I enjoyed about that new opening was the panoramic shots of the town. Too many openings in daytime and primetime rely heavily on CGI and it sucks. GH has a CGI hospital. DAYS has a CGI hourglass. AMC has a CGI photo album. Whatever happened to the beauty of nature?

Well I wrote out a long post about the first new episode and it got wiped as I was sending so I'll hammer out the gist of it.

Production wise, I liked most aspects of the episode and the location stuff was nice. Some of the shots were perfectly still so it suggests that in the long run practice makes perfect better. Their main problem is that they're so intent on zooming in for closeups that if the actor makes so much as a head jerk, the cameramen feel obliged to shakily follow them. They just need to pull back a bit to frame a shot that doesn't require them to follow the actor's every move. If they polish it all up, I think it can genuinely look good.

The main problem for me was the writing which unlike most doesn't usually bother me with GL. The dialogue was good and I liked Reva's confrontation with Cassie but the episode was completely lacking in structure. It didn't even seem like the episode had a breakdown or sense of direction. I'm all for being fast paced but it went so far beyond that, cramming in every character that it became an incoherent mess after the first 10 minutes and ironically it just made it seem as though nothing was happening. Why were Natalia/Rafe/Daisy even in the episode when they were completely islanded and did absolutely nothing? This was the perfect opportunity to get new viewers acquainted with the show and it was squandered. They did a good job of establishing Springfield as a locale but not the connections between its residents. New viewers wouldn't have a clue that Lizzie and Beth had anything to do with each other for example.

I'm also usually fine with a montage but like the episode (and the residents of Springfield it seems), it was all over the place. Daisy was with Billy, then she's in church with Rafe, then they're all fishing...it needed some kind of progressive logic to it. Speaking of church, I get Natalia's religious but are we supposed to believe she stayed there all frigging day?

I hope that on Monday, they'll chillax and start getting back to plotting the show.

I did laugh at Marina throwing the football at Harley though.

I am not a GL watcher but caught the beginning on Youtube. I love the exteriors, I love the way the rooms now look like rooms, I love the realistic feel to it, reminiscent of Eastenders or some brit soap.

What I don't like is the willy nilly camera work which pays no mind to drama. They just show anything pending where the cameraman can squeeze into without obstructing the view. Camera placement, like over the shoulder shots, close ups, reaction shots, two shots, establishing shots, all these things work for a reason. And GL is basically ignoring all the drama that can arise from what we actually see with our own eyes, in what is supposed to be a melodrama.

I think the first shot had these three ladies doing their nails. And we eventually panned up from nails to the girl who used to play Kelly on OLTL talking to these two other women. The problem was in the extreme foreground were the other women, so what was I supposed to be keying in on? The two in the foreground served no purpose if all I was supposed to do is listen to what the person in the middle was saying, so why then show them dominating the screen?

It's just stuff like that, the two people in the car with the camera in the back seat for no particular reason other than they can't afford to attach a camera to the front of a car the way a film would, and so on. I love that GL is standing out and I love the fact the trees don't look like plastic, but I just wish there was some rhyme or reason to what the cameraman and director decide to show us.

I do like that GL has more outdoor scenes in this new format. I think that the show looks pretty crappy otherwise. However, the good writing makes up for all these flaws and in this regard the show is improving.

Okay, I hate being judgemental, but oh well- who cares? Honestly, I can't stand new opening themes because I'm kind of use to the way the old theme was before. It's the same when I listen to a new Madonna album, ya know? I like her old stuff, so her new stuff takes me quite awhile to get adjusted to and appreciate it plain and simple. However, I've listened to other soap themes like Another World or One Life To Live, or better yet- Loving.

Another World Theme- 1991

One Life To Live- 1990

I can't find the tune for Loving, but they had at least TWO theme openings where it related to the show that viewers were watching. Does this new Guiding Light theme mention anything about Guiding Light or do they sing Guiding Light? Nope. Instead, it's like a Coca-Cola Commercial, but I'm being deprived of two people opening up a bottle of Coke and making a toast! But what's even more insulting is that I wish that it were a beer commercial for Michelob or Budweiser!

ETA: Ellen Wheeler was the director of the 2.29.08 episode
