Y&R - Week Jan 07

New week in Genoa Wisconsin. The writer's strike still leaves us LML-free although her stories are still front-page news. <_<

All in all, I the last episodes were a let down for me. They were definitely different from the first 4 or 5 episodes after Xmas which where my Y&R re-start. I didn't realize that Paula Cwickly was writing the last episodes along but an unchange to the change for better was to be felt, IMO. The scenes with Victor in prison and the fall-out were hacked up. Suddenly the meaningless scenes were back instead of the crispy New YEar's Eve drama during the blizzard. Is it just me???

I really they go back to longer scenes, real conversations and less flip & flop.

Some observations:

Cane & Lily. Gross. But slightly less gross than imagined. I find Christel Khalil very pretty recently. She's still a let down to Davetta Sherwood's LIly but ok with "Oh my gawd Daniel, is this porn?"-free material.

Phyllis is shockingly tolerable these days. Still hate her with Nick but this character definitely bounced back a million lightyears recently.

Totally digging for the Victor & Nikki drama - although I thank all my lucky stars for missing out on the Clear Springs Disaster. The fallout is done kinda interesting. Don't knwo whether this is part of LML's handwritting or if the current regime retooled this story.

Kay & Jill still go by the hip. End the madness - NOW. Even as mother and daughter they don't have to walk into every single scene together.

That Gloria story is so much a rehash of the Tom Fisher-story. "Jeff" is at least 1000 times better than Shackleford's previous role. He seems to have fun playing evil. It's ok for me.

Apart from Monday Y&R is pretty good recently. Definitely not due to the stories but actors which are allowed again to work with real dialogue. Hopefully the next couple of days will be good...

I'm nervous about Josh Griffith because I don't know this writer. Was he brought on the show with LML and her band of monkeys? Because if so, I don't have high hopes of him returning the show to the depth and richness it exhibited a mere two years ago. If he's a long-time Y&R writer under Bill Bell's, Kay Alden's and Jack Smith's respective tenures, then I would be more upbeat about Y&R's future.

I like Cane and am not completely turned off by Cane-Lily... except that everytime I see CK's Lily, I remember her screeching at Amber about the mole on her boob and having seen that same boob on Daniels' porn site. Not a visual I EVER wanted to have! Not only can I not take Lily seriously after that, but it damn near ruined Michael Grazadei's awesome turn as Daniel for me. And I basically cannot deal with Ambarf on my screen without imagining some fishy stench wherever she goes.

I want to tune back into Y&R, bad. But I cannot while LML's clammy fingerprints are still all over the show.

Yes, the crappy aspect is Latham's horrendous storylines are still playing out. However, the air around the show has definitely changed. I don't find myself forced to watch anymore or depressed after each viewing. Though there's still a lot that needs to be worked out, the show is more enjoyable and the actors look like they're enjoying themselves too. Could it be better? Yes! But the show has improved a lot since Latham and her band of hacks left.

I will tell you that I think that you can see a slight change in the air for sure on the show....Even Brad with his over inflated ego was somewhat tolerable....hopefully we can actually get out of Gloria Hell soon and have her actually get the bomb dropped on her for good...

Hopefully we can see the possible end of the Chow man; but then again, with everything that JT is dealing with, who knows if he can actually continue to dig up some actual dirt on the man.

I'm not ready to give up yet as I hope once they get this crap that LML left them over with they can get back to character driven stories instead of plot plot plot. I've not been overly impressed so far with the exception of the show on January 2. I think I only fastforwared twice maybe. There were great conversations between people I care about instead of inane ones with characters I just wish were dead. ;) Best part was everybody kept their clothes on.

Am I hopeful? Ehhhhh...not really. But I'm not willing to give up completely on the show.

I liked today's show. I usually don't care for Gloria but she was tolerable. Maybe it was because she was drunk and thought that she'd bested Jeffrey. I still don't think this is enough of a pay off for all she's done though. Every time she goes on about how evil Jack is, it makes it more apparent that she and her sons need to suffer as much as they wish on Jack.

Is Nikki wearing some kind of hair piece because there's something odd about her hair to me? It looked better today but there was a day when it looked like it wasn't properly blended.

I have seen no difference at all. I didn't even realize LML's stuff had stopped airing. The show still seems the same to me....not bad but not the best either. I think people just hated LML so much because of some of the backstage things she did and that's why they didn't like the show. She made some bad choices but I didn't think the show was that bad under her. With that being said..I am glad that we have a new writer and I hope he turns out better than LML.

I can understand Neil being concerned about Lily getting involved with Cane. I think expressing his concern is good enough but the meddling doesn't suit him. Devon is obnoxious in his zeal to protect Lily from Cane. They'd do better to make up a story for Devon involving his bubbly girlfriend instead of making him the watchdog.

Y&R is losing me fast - again.

Amber & a wig. That Jeffrey-story is a complete redux of Tom Fisher. Puhleeze! Those stories are so horrid. The execution is not bad but the show is kind of boring. Seeing FauxVictoria in coma is so superflous and that clash of Boremetotears Heltstrom & TVGN was laughable. Whatever.

The musical chairs that are Sharon & Jack & Brad are also not too exciting although I'm pretty certain under LML's drive it would been much worse.

This show totally lacks strong compelling stories. Every episode without a Victor & Nikki quarrel is beyond lame even though we get a balance of characters and stories which is in general a good thing the other episodes tank...

EDIT: Dare I say that one of the most exciting things currently is the promise of David Chow's downfall? I've no idea where they are going with this but I hope for the best: buh-bye David...

    • I'm sticking to my theory that June is Hayley's sister (maybe a cousin since this show showcases cousins). Hayley really needs someone else to interact with because her being isolated to just Bill is not working. Eva only seems to have a backbone when it comes to Kat. She had no problem rubbing it in her face that they are sisters. Sharon hanging up on Anita was a good little nudge in the direction of group members actually showing up at some point. At least one of them having a name is promising.
    • Reviewing the 1985/86 sophomore slaughtering and sophomore surprise. The Cosby Show 23 of 25 episodes finished #1 in their original broadcast, one episode finished 2nd, and one episode finished 3rd. Murder, She Wrote 18 of 22 episodes were the highest-rated drama in their original broadcast and 19 of 22 episodes were CBS's highest-rated scripted series in their original broadcast.
    • I really enjoy Tracy and Jason together as well in scenes. I’m a sucker for the surviving older Quartermaines, it’s just crazy that it took this long for a producer to tell Steve Burton we don’t care what you want, you’re a Quartermaine, get the [!@#$%^&*] over it. Murders actually solved in Port Charles? Hell no. The people in town don’t care so we’re not supposed to. God if they did this to usher Sonny off it would be the best episode of GH I’ve ever seen. I’d never complain again. I will never stop trying to get that 10% out of you It was so so good. There was so much promise. New old writers came back in and immediately said f.uck that, Sonny is a hero. You are not alone when it comes to Harper as Jordan. It’s a lonely island of 2 but you’re not alone. I enjoy her and especially with the new doctor. Most of his time on this damn show has just been him in a hospital bed over a football injury we never even saw happen .
    • The casting of Reginald seemed to have been part of the reason for a lack of exploration of vulnerability in the character. I know Mary talked about not liking the change in Reg, but her disappointment was rarely explored once she left him. For example, did she ever question if Reg was conning her in Paraguay, or was the Bay City version of Reg real? Imagine running a philanthropic center in Paraguay, and then becoming a social worker in Bay City? It must have been so frustrating to once be able to provide anything that anyone needed, and now having to rely on government funded programs. And lastly, she went from a house full of servants, to living over a restaurant. We were supposed to believe that she was so blinded by her love for Vince and the kids, that she never longed for her life when someone else washed her lingerie?
    • This was an excellent "filler" episode but I'd prefer to refer to it as a character building episode. I love that BTG is paced in a way that they can have episodes like this as opposed to the repetitive nature of the other soaps which don't leave room for this. The highlight for me was Eva with Martin's family. They've talked so much about her doing hair and I was so excited to finally get to see that in action. I thought the tension with Samantha was nice since she is a Dupree woman. I also love that Martin is trying to help Eva feel welcomed. I struggled a bit with Martin but he really shines when put across Eva, Kat and his grandparents. He definitely gets my vote for most improved. I also loved the scenes with Dani, Nicole and Andre. I love that Nicole clocked them so easily lol. I know many haven't enjoyed how Dani has acted since the Ted/Eva reveal but I find it so heartwarming watching her with Nicole. They clearly have a deep love for each other despite their differences and I love that Dani still tries even though her approach isn't always great and her whole life is a mess. Nicole/Dani is another one of the star pairs on the show. Anita and Vernon's scenes were excellent and the more I see of this story, the more I can't wait for the Articulettes to show up. I wonder if they've already been quietly cast and are filming. Not that I'm complaining, but the set is like Fort Knox so we really have no clue what is going on there. I can only hope we will see them soon. I also must say, Tamara Tunie looked stunning today. The Jacob/Naomi scenes were another highlight. I like the working class vibe they give to the show. I'm also becoming intrigued about June and want to know more about how she ended up on the streets and who she's connected to. I hope it's Haley because she's in dire need of some backstory and development. The weak point of the episode were the Bill and Haley scenes. How are you going to have them having sex on his desk and we couldn't see a little bra or shirtless action from Bill? That was tired and a waste of time. They need to work on integrating them more with the rest of the canvas. I do not care about them anymore.
    • I always thought the cliffhanger was so anticlimactic, compared to the Dallas cliffhanger that year and three years earlier Kirby strangled Alexis, which Blake stopped. The Matthew cliffhanger was dull as hell.
    • Setting aside a general distaste for the story -- I was sitting here wondering how long Erica's doppelgänger Jane story lasted? Also, how did it begin? What was the setup for Erica to have a double?
    • Fixed. Thanks for letting me know. DA's passing truly saddened me. More than many of the recent passings. I was holding out hope we'd get one more visit before she passed.

    • Made even dumber with that Blake/Alexis chokehold, followed by the following season when Matthew resurfaced. WTF? There’s good reason I have skipped from Season 5 straight to Season 9 on a couple of my Dynasty rewatches lol. And Chase was supposed to die, but somehow they talked Foxworth back into one more season. They probably shouldn’t have at all.
    • Philip, like Reva, were characters that should have remained in the 80s and never been bought back to the soap.
