Will any soap ever go to dvd?

With so many episodes produced over the years (and I'm not including the ones that were supposedly erased and lost forever), it would be cost-prohibitive, at best. I mean, unless you were a total fanatic with a highly disposable income, I doubt you'd want to pay, say, two thousand bucks for "The Complete GL: 1977-1985," or something like that.

Rename it "The Complete ATWT" and I'll buy. Compilations of memorable storylines are good too, but I still would want to see the entire episodes, not just bits and pieces arranged at some lackey's discretion. Edited clips on YouTube are bad enough.

Not necessarily. Most stand alone DVD players are already able to play videos in MPEG4 format (divX, Xvid, etc.), which is much more space efficient than MPEG2. And with the new HD media like BlueRay and HD-DVD coming, you could easily put an entire year on one or two discs. So, it´s nothing impossible but I think rather than burn them onto DVD/HDDVD they will make them available on web, probably for free with some unstoppable adverts attached to it.

But I do think storyline related and couple related editions will be eventually published.

I can see them releasing a boxed set containing Emmy winning episodes throughout the years, from Best Drama to Best Younger Actor. I'd definitely invest in something like that.

The ABC soaps have Disney/Buena Vista for DVD distribution, Y&R and Days have Sony for DVD distribution, and Passions has Universal for DVD distribution. If the parent company allows, all of those or some part of them could in fact be available on DVD. However, the P&G soaps (GL and ATWT) DO NOT have a DVD distribution company, which means they probably have no option of ever being released on DVD. Unless of course, Paramount (parent company of CBS) strikes a deal with PGP to release something of those soaps on DVD, or some independent DVD company chooses to do so.

Probably just a compilation of things like they've done on VHS in the past or like Soap Net has done. Luke and Laura through the years, and then have like a two four disc set of their greatest 16 episodes. Or like my mother has a VHS tape she bought about fifteen years ago of AMC's greatest weddings. I bought A&E's behind the scenes Biography of AMC on DVD this summer and that had to be specially made.

There are many reasons this will be very unlikely to happen:

If you are thinking complete series it would be impossible they have 250 episodes on average a year. A show like Sex and the City I think had less then that over its entire run and when the entire series came out is was around $200.

With the ever declining ratings due you really think any distrubtion company will be like "lets put a whole bunch of money into producing and advertising Soaps on DVD" Highly unlikely.

Didn't ABC have some Best of or complitations or something a while back? Like 5 plus years. I don't even know if they were whole episodes or just bits and pieces pasted together.

Of course complete series are out of the question for most soaps, but Dark Shadows has been a HUGE success and it's been cancelled for DECADES! If fans will spend hundreds on autographed scripts, luncheon's, etc. then they'll buy a $30 dvd. In the UK for Coronation Street they released 8 episodes, per year, in boxsets for each decade. You mean Y&R can't throw together 25 episodes and say "Best of 90s: Vol 1?"

These soaps have the platform to promote them as well. Look at how well all of those crappy books have sold. Fans want DVD. Short-lived shows have them, game shows have them, everyone has them except soaps. This is a big market that is wasted. BTW, ABC only released one hour wedding specials which were already on VHS.

They could do compilation DVD's. Or DVD's of Soap Couples or stuff like that......

The couples is a great idea. I still can't believe they didn't do a Luke and Laura DVD. With all the promo, that would've definitely sold. Other big couples like Carjack on ATWT, Todd/Blair on OLTL, Tad/Dixie on AMC, etc. Or what about a Susan Lucci DVD to promote when she's on The View countless times?

If soaps do get cancelled, I doubt we'll get them though. The PGP soaps are lucky due to the channel with AOL.

Well, Night S**t will be, as of February, but I'd rather forget that even existed. But some who went to SSW said it was being pushed, hardcore.

Well, sure, ABCD can afford to release "GH After Dark" on DVD. They've made only 13 eps so far.

why not just buy them online from fans who have complete stroylines on dvd? thats what i do.
