First and foremost I blame the internet. People with shared likes and dislikes were never able to communicate so readily with each other before. Now they feed off each other's indignation on a daily basis so it escalates.

But poor quality of the soaps themselves must have something to do with it as well. Sometimes the shows are so bad that for some, maybe one character or couple is the only thing that keeps them watching. Then there's the need to lay blame as to why a show is in poor shape.

Fanatical fanbases have got to be the worse thing that's ever happened to soaps. It's no longer about the show itself, just how great so and so is and how much the show sucks without them. One prime example for me is a certain couple over on AMC. I have stopped watching the show not only because it sucks, but because I was sick of being attacked from fans for daring to have a differing opinion. Ultimately, TPTB pandering to certain groups at the expense of others will be what really bring the soaps down in the long run.

IMO, fanbade camps are helping a lot to ruin daytime.

Think about it - when they are not happy with there fanbase on the show all they do is bash it. Now say someone goes online to read about a soap they cought here or there and all they read is how awful the show is - this comming from "fans" of the show. or for that matter they read how great this one storyline is but the rest sux. its a no win situation, IMO.

Plus certin fanbases also cut out other fans of the sho0w. Carjackers (ATWT) & Zendull (AMC) seem to be doing it the most at the moment. They also vote an insane amount of time in the soap mags and it makes it seem like that couple/char/person/show is more like than what it is.

Soaps need to stop listing to the fans and trying to make everyone happy and just write produce and direct a great show. Like they use to..

of course i have my own fan couples char's and actress on daytime, but i am a fan of Days of our Lives & General Hospital - the show. thru up and downs the good and the bad i stick by them.

I totally agree. I remember once I liked a character so much I thought I was part of the fanbase, but the people in it were so mean when I disagreed. I realized how insane it all is.

Does anyone think the networks maybe stir it up a little? They claim that ABC at least like all the publicity they think it gives them to have these people at war with one another on the internet. I could see them stirring it up a little.

^ I'm convinced ABCD and in particular GH cultivates the fanbase war culture. CBS has fanbases, but it just isn't as bad, imo. Until quite recently, I had never seen a bitch fight over Y&R and then Sharon/Phyllis/Nick happened, so I think LML took a cue from ABCD.

I'm in! I'm an AMC fan first, even though I think the show is at the worst it's ever been at the moment. but nothing grates on my nerves faster than people saying the show is bad because Zendall are unhappy. W....T....F??? AMC thrived long before Zendall and would do better without it IMO. This crazed hysteria sickens me. I have loved couples and characters too and they have long since gone off the show, but I still watch, because AMC is an esemble show (or at least it used to be). *sigh*

Strange as it is, I used to be in the Zendall camp. But I was so turned off by the fans and their "passion" I abandoned ship, and it's a big part of why I can't stand Zendall now.

    • I agree.  Of course, I haven't seen any of her work on DAYS or LIAMST, but I have seen her stuff on other shows (SFT, GH, LOL, FC and KL) and I think she was very, very good.
    • Yup, i thought it was Adamson. Backtracking...I love that Kristina knows now. Her smug disrespectful attitude toward Alexis was pissing me off. If not for the blackmailing Alexis part I would be rooting for Ric. This a been a decent sweeps period for GH, I'm liking the stories right now. Good thing I can watch third party GH clips online to keep up because Beyond The Gates is keeping attention at 2PM. It's making me miss my days of living in a 3pm GH market.
    • I always thought it was a bit odd that they brought in the brother and sister of a character who had been killed off ages before, and who was the wife of a character no longer on the show (Jeff). They were really dull. I would think the reason he hated playing Dan was that he was Brooke's plaything while she was waiting around for a more exciting lover. Just like Wally, he was portrayed as a dullard and a bust in the bedroom. Many, many moons ago, I saw Kelly on Broadway in the play Deathtrap. He played the role Christopher Reeve played in the movie. I remember recognizing him from the show and thinking, wow, he's a way better actor than I thought he was! He probably had a good theatrical career after soaps.
    • This. The 1994 telecast had some of my favorite winners with Zaslow finally getting his due, Melissa Hayden, and all three major players in the Marty rape storyline getting recognized (HBS, Haskell, Howarth).
    • You thought it was Adamson? He read but apparently he had no chance. He felt disrespected by the show's reaction to him, according to his tweet.
    • I suspected the actor who played Noah Newman would become the new Michael, but I didn't expect it was the recasted Noah Newman who would become Michael!
    • I didnt mean that I thought he would kill her; just that he gave off the impression that he had the capacity to do so. The original Ted portrayed him with more of a dark side when they were together. Its the switch up I see in True Crime stories when an upstanding pillar of the community ends up doing heinous things under people's noise whom would never beleive  he'd do when in actuality, he's a covert monster. Thats a dichotomy in the character as portrayed by Maurice that I dont see anymore
    • I think one mistake that later writers made with Gail was to make her either Lee's angelic wife or the therapist that was an easy dupe for evil characters that required treatment.  Under Marland, there was a series of scenes where Tracy goaded Lee to drink, Jessie witnessed it and spilled the beans about what she saw to Gail.  Gail, then, in turn, ripped Tracy a new one.  I wish that Gail and Tracy scene still existed on YouTube.  It was glorious not only to see evil Tracy be put in her place, but to see some real fire from Gail.
    • I won't be. We all know that the shelf life of a villainess isn't very long. Trisha Mann-Grant is the breakout star of BtG and she is destined for bigger and better things.
    • I feel CBS/P&G got really shaken by 1978-1982 ABC huge rise and domination, thus the changes to the shows. Considering Capitol showed no growth, I wonder if CBS ever regretting cancelling Search for Tomorrow. From the 1980s Ratings thread, Capitol pretty much inherited Search for Tomorrow audience but Capitol ratings were impacted when One Life to Live rebounded in 1985 with Andrea Evans return. Remember Capitol was head-to-head with the second half of One Life to Live. Even if CBS kept Search for Tomorrow, I think it would've ended as soon as Bill Bell had a second show ready. Funny thing is Search for Tomorrow NBC run was only three months shorter that Capitol run.
