OK, I just read that Kay Alden and Ed Scott didn't get along very well, and were at odds over that whole Sean Bridges debacle and CBS sided with Alden and made Sony decide not to renew Scott's contract as EP in 2001 (assumption). Alden was also very positive and upbeat over Shaughnessy's promotion to EP status as well. It really makes you wonder just how chaotic things were at Y&R, after Bell left the day to day duties...

Here are some exerts below:

So I take it that Kay Alden won't be following Ed Scott to Days anytime soon.

Darn. Brad Bell is so lucky to have both Shaughnessy and Alden.

That's what Jim and Babs should have corrected. If the viewership erodes significantly, they will obviously be gone. And I hope Julie goes with them, too.

But your post, Michael, also shows that not only Megan sucked, her subwriters did too. Sad, indeed.

Unfortunately, the show isn't glowing at the moment, but it is still far, far ahead of most soaps you see right now.

Memo to myself: I have to stop all this negative criticism. :D

I agree 100%. I'm one of Kay Alden's biggest admirers but unfortunately as soon as her name popped up in the credits, the show got too fragmented and lost way of its steam...

But it's still damn good, way ahead of most and my hope remains. AND KA got B&B Heather Tom whatever Brad Bell said in the interviews. Tom is one of Alden's favorites. Period.

Yes, which is why he should tell his brother, head of the Bell Dramatic Serial Company, to rehire them at Y&R! LOL!

I also doubt Jack F. Smith will make his way to Days with Scott as well, since Smith was Shaughnessy's right hand man and was appointed co-EP by Shaughnessy.

I thought it was interesting that Alden and the other writers didn't seem to like Ed Scott much though...

Someone should write a tell-all about the behind the scenes terror that went on at Y&R, after Bell stepped down. :)

When I look at Ed Scott's face, I can see why they didn't like him. Somehow, I just do.

Really? What's the story?

After Bell left the day to day duties, there was an apparent power struggle between Scott and Adlen for cretive control. Things got really bad in 2001, over the decison to recast Sean Bridges, that the issue was taken to higher brass at CBS/Sony. CBS/Sony sided with Alden and opted not to renew Scott's contract with them, though they didn't comment much on the matter. Shaughnessy was promoted to EP, and Alden had nothing but positive and upbeat things to say. There's more to the story, but this is generally what's known.

Also, Shaughnessy seemed to have a better relationship with the writers and cast than Scott. There's a few pics with him, Smith, and Alden at Y&R events. Alden and Smith also always gushed about him to the press, which they didn't do with Scott too much.

Sean Bridges? Never heard of him. I assume he was a minor character? If so, that can't be the reason why Ed and Kay don't get along (allegedly). Like you said, there has to be more to the story (if true).

Man, there's so many fractured relationships in daytime. It's always interesting to find out why. Lots of juicy stuff! I love it. LOL :)

This is the old soapcentral article that reported on the Alden-Scott drama in 2001.

Y&R Names New Executive Producer

Posted Wednesday, December 05, 2001 5:46:51 PM

There are changes atop the behind-the-scenes staff at The Young and the Restless.

On December 4th, CBS announced that Emmy award-winning producer David Shaughnessy had been named Y&R's new executive producer. Effective immediately, Shaughnessy replaces Edward Scott, husband of actress Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman), who has now finished out his contract with the show. Scott celebrated 25 years with The Young and the Restless on November 13th.

"Scott's contributions to Y&R will be sorely missed by the company," said William J. Bell, Sr. (Co-Creator, Senior Executive Producer and Executive Story Consultant). "and we wish him well in all his future endeavors."

Of the show's new executive producer, Bell said, "I am confident that under David's leadership Y&R will continue to produce compelling and provocative daytime drama."

Head writer Kay Alden also stated that she is looking forward to working with Shaughnessy. "Having worked with David for over a decade, I'm excited about the enthusiasm and perspective that he brings to the show. Our writing team looks forward to a great future under his leadership."

Shaughnessy is no stranger to Y&R as he's been with the program since 1990 and has received numerous awards during his run. Among the awards Shaughnessy has received are the People's Choice Award, NAACP Image Awards, and several Media Access Awards.

The move to name a new executive producer at Y&R does not come without chatter and gossip among the media and show insiders. It has been reported that Scott and Alden were frequently at odds over the show's direction. Among their reported recent squabbles was the decision to recast the role of Sean Bridges.

CBS declined to comment on whether or not Scott opted not to renew his contract with the show or if the network had decided not to offer him a new contract.
